For context, what OP means by "cleaning" webcomics is removing artist attribution. Look through their post history. And the answer why people don't do this is clear: because it's an unbelievably shitty thing to do.

[–] breadsmasher@lemmy.world 30 points 1 day ago

id rather see the original comic WITH AUTHOR ATTRIBUTION INTACT.

[–] Assassassin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 day ago

Why isn't leaving attribution on webcomics a standard practice?

Go beep yourself.

[–] Janx@piefed.social 8 points 1 day ago

Recreating an artists work with AI slop and posting it without attribution is not "upscaling".

[–] HuudaHarkiten@piefed.social 15 points 1 day ago

The same reason why removing the artist and song title from a mp3 file is a moronic thing to do.

[–] Retro_unlimited@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

When an artist signs their work, they are proud of their work. You’re editing out their name, removing their credit after all they did. Your reposting it shows you like their work, but you remove their credit. Fuck you beep. It’s so fucking disrespectful to edit out credit!!!!!! Look how many down votes you have!!!!!

If you mean as the artist, just work in high resolution in the first place.

If you mean using AI upscaling on someone else's webcomic that's already been shared several times and lost quality along the way before reposting, that's because it can cause aberrations and sometimes looks uglier than a low quality webcomic. Better to reverse-search it with tineye to find the original, which should be in good quality.

I upscale comics content pretty regularly, but it's almost never webcomics, but graphic novel content where I haven't found anything better-quality online. But yeah-- "Waifu2" and others can indeed fail pretty hard depending on your source. I'm still kinda experimenting with all that, and probably need to break out GIMP more often.

I have no problem with people calling out "Beep" for the chronic thing he does, but just in case someone is actually curious about the OP, I wanted to add that yes, it's a real and useful option sometimes when your source is tiny and/or full of graphics artifacts.

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

Because then shitheads would use it as an excuse to remove the author's credit in the comic

[–] remon@ani.social 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Oh no, Beep just beeped it's last beep!

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Because having AI hallucinate changes more than the resolution...

If you want to slop everything up before you post it...

Most people are going to downvote for too many various valid reasons to list out.

There's a few militantly pro-AI instances, and they'll van anyone that down votes you for any reason.

I suggest you go there, because they're the most blocked places on the fediverse.

You can post slop to your heart's content, and the few people who see it won't have any problems with it

You get your safe place, no one else gets slop shoved down their throats.

Everyone wins.

Because the rest of us respect people who create things.
