Hacker News.

  • We introduce a new measure of AI displacement risk, observed exposure, that combines theoretical LLM capability and real-world usage data, weighting automated (rather than augmentative) and work-related uses more heavily
  • AI is far from reaching its theoretical capability: actual coverage remains a fraction of what's feasible
  • Occupations with higher observed exposure are projected by the BLS to grow less through 2034
  • Workers in the most exposed professions are more likely to be older, female, more educated, and higher-paid
  • We find no systematic increase in unemployment for highly exposed workers since late 2022, though we find suggestive evidence that hiring of younger workers has slowed in exposed occupations

  • Stanford researchers launched an open-source platform for collecting screenome data to study health behaviors.
  • The system simplifies data collection for researchers without technical expertise, removing previous barriers to screenome research.
  • By addressing privacy concerns with strict protocols, the initiative seeks to make meaningful interventions possible, paving the way for personalized health insights.

Differences in cellular pathway activity flip the switch from nocturnality to diurnality and explain a major evolutionary change humans have undergone.

Early mammals were nocturnal, sleeping during the day while large predators were active. However, after the extinction of dinosaurs, several different lineages of mammals independently transitioned to become active during the day. Exactly how this dramatic change occurred has proved elusive. A new study, published in the journal Science, has revealed a cellular switch which holds the answer.

The U.S. job market turned weaker last month, dashing hopes for an economic rebound.

A report from the Labor Department Friday shows employers cut 92,000 jobs in February, when economists had expected the U.S. would continue adding jobs, albeit at a sluggish pace. The unemployment rate inched up to 4.4%.

Job gains for December and January were also revised downward, with December now showing a net loss 17,000 jobs.

New satellite images from several key military bases in the Arabian Peninsula suggest that Iran is seeking to degrade air defenses by destroying US-made radars that detect incoming missiles and drones.

The radar system for an American THAAD missile battery in Jordan was struck and apparently destroyed in the first days of the US-Israeli strikes on Iran, a satellite image taken on Monday shows.

Buildings housing similar radar systems were also hit at two locations in the United Arab Emirates, CNN analysis shows, although it is unclear if the equipment was damaged.

The radar is a critical element for the high-end missile interceptor system, which is used to engage and destroy ballistic missiles as they fly toward their target. The US operates eight THAAD batteries, while the UAE operates two and Saudi Arabia one. This one was at the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, over 500 miles from Iran.

In a 2021 study, researchers asked over 500 participants to explain how the morning-after pill worked. Despite these pills’ widespread use, 60% answered incorrectly. Emergency contraceptives are often misunderstood— even the phrase “the morning-after pill” is a misnomer. So, how do they work?

Humans have been fashioning caps since the dawn of civilization. A bearskin cap from the Bronze Age is one of the earliest surviving hats, discovered alongside Europe’s oldest mummy. Hats aren’t just for keeping heads warm or making a fashion statement— they’ve been used throughout history as a symbol of status, power, and politics.

Research.

Overdiagnosis is not a problem, but misdiagnosis may be as people are driven into the private sector by long waits, and sadly, missed diagnoses remain common —Tamsin Ford

Experts are warning that far from being over-diagnosed, people with ADHD are waiting too long for assessment, support and treatment.

In an era of climate anxiety, geopolitical tensions and rapidly advancing artificial intelligence, apocalyptic thinking is no longer confined to the fringes of society

Because of the deep state /s

There is a loneliness epidemic that is expanding.

The previous year I was reading an article about men who simply disappeared from all the circles, due to lack of job education or training (NEET).

I imagine it will keep getting worse in the following years.

This post provides arguments, asks questions, and documents some examples of Anthropic's leadership being misleading and deceptive, holding contradictory positions that consistently shift in OpenAI's direction, lobbying to kill and water down regulation so helpful that employees of all major AI companies speak out to support it, and violating the fundamental promise the company was founded on. It also shares a few previously unreported details on Anthropic leadership's promises and efforts.

Anthropic has a strong internal culture that has broadly EA views and values, and the company has strong pressures to appear to follow these views and values as it wants to retain talent and the loyalty of staff, but it's very unclear what they would do when it matters most. Their staff should demand answers.

Actually, no.

The percentage might be close to 60-80%.

"journalistic integrity" means they have to mention Israel and USA in all their articles regardless of the topic?

[–] Beep@lemmus.org 1 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Why the actual fuck would they do that?

I feel like I am talking to AI bot.

Talk and discuss normally or keep repeating your words like a broken robot. The choice is yours.

They are doing a long investigation involving Iran. Why would they mention Israel?

[–] Beep@lemmus.org 0 points 2 days ago (3 children)

You still didn't answer.

[–] Beep@lemmus.org -2 points 2 days ago (5 children)

Where exactly does it say that?

[–] Beep@lemmus.org 6 points 2 days ago (9 children)

This is widely documented in hundred of articles?

From what I personally read about alone, from the first of February you will find Israeli media outlets reporting on Police Operating 6,600 Cameras in Public Spaces Nationwide (Israel Police are operating a massive surveillance network, connecting thousands of cameras from various sources. And there are plans for a significant expansion of 5,000 more cameras, including controversial facial recognition capabilities that have not been authorized by legislation.).

It's not the lack of documentation, it's the lack of attention to that.
