I feel like projection is a product of a lack of self-awareness.
All of it ties to narcissistic traits; narcissistic personalities speak through and in service of the ego, which the narcissist perceives as infallible and supreme. Therefore the self-reflection required to check oneself before making statements and accusations about the behaviors and beliefs of others is nonexistent.
Besides, even if what a narcissist says about another person can also be applied to them personally, they see themselves as a righteous exception. Perfect example is the narcissist’s prayer.
Because their leaders are usually narcissists.

Don't worry, we've come a long way since 2014, when a bunch of wimps who took the whole 'Cross of Iron' speech from some commie in the 1950s seriously and reduced the defense budget. We've doubled it since, and it's being proposed to increase it by another 50% in the next few years!
At least they are spending it on defense instead of invading countries on the other side of globe.
I mean, it's Iran. They've certainly spent it on numerous unwelcome proxy wars, including sending literal thousands of IRGC members to fight for Assad in the Syrian Civil War.
