This is just a straight up advertisement.

Why is this marketing getting posted in a meme sub?

"I'm Not Even Supposed to Be Here Today" adjacent games

[–] rozodru@piefed.world 27 points 4 days ago

"Fine then, let me just borrow your car"

"What for?"

"I want to rent a movie"

"you work...at a video store"

"I work at a shitty video store! I want to go to a good video store and get a good movie!"

[–] Maiq@piefed.social 7 points 4 days ago

View Askew.

The way our character shows up on their day off and loans out VHS tapes before diving face first into a mooby's combo meal is full of the exaggerated swagger of a middle-aged rental clerk.

Hey that gives me an idea for a mini game they could add.

I was just thinking, would this be good for money laundering?

[–] chuckleslord@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago

This isn't "Be Kind, Rewind"

[–] rozodru@piefed.world 36 points 4 days ago (4 children)

I used to work at a Blockbuster, I'm not sure I'd want to relive those days.

My favorite was when customers would come in with the cards we mailed out letting them know they were in collections for a late return. something like $4.25 (yes we'd send people to collections for the cost of a rental) and they'd always have the same complaint "I'M TRYING TO BUY A HOUSE AND THIS IS DESTROYING MY CREDIT, REMOVE IT!" which I always did cause man...it was $4.25.

[–] Shirasho@lemmings.world 32 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Hot take - If you can't pay for a damn video tape rental you can't be trusted to pay your house loan.

[–] scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech 8 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Yeah sorry I agree with you. Entire point of the credit system is to let people like mortgage lenders know how trustworthy you are. All you really need for a good score is to simply pay things off on time. If you ignore the small things, how will you treat the big things?

[–] AntiOutsideAktion@lemmy.ml 8 points 4 days ago

the point of the credit system was to have a race blind way to be racist

How do you buy a house without $4.25

[–] rozodru@piefed.world 13 points 4 days ago (2 children)

the excuse was, according to them, that having the late fee sent to collections would destroy their credit thus preventing them from getting a loan.

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 15 points 4 days ago (1 children)

"Well then, sounds like you've got a payment to make"

[–] wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago (2 children)

More like, "well for just $4.25, plus my convenience fee of $100, we can resolve this problem"

I love being assholes to assholes, so the chub is just a side benefit.

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

Yeah, but then you give them something to complain about afterwards. Pissing them off by being kind is sooooo much more rewarding. You haven't experienced pettiness until you've gotten a customer to a boiling rage by being nothing but saccharine and professional to a pissed off customer looking for a fight.

I used to work retail cell phone sales for a now defunct reseller, and we'd frequently get people in who got pissed off when they found out we couldn't do a lot of carrier functions, and boy was it fun winding people up by being kind, courteous and professional.

I wasn't as bad as the South Park ISP dudes, but same vibe lol

“I’M TRYING TO BUY A HOUSE AND THIS IS DESTROYING MY CREDIT, REMOVE IT!” which I always did cause man…it was $4.25.

I'm sure they did nothing wrong with that house once they bought it...

*looks at housing market*

OP you should have doubled the fine

The poor yearn for service positions.

/s if it’s necessary.

[–] gdog05@lemmy.world 15 points 4 days ago

"This job would be great if it wasn't for the fucking customers"

[–] wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago (3 children)

yearn for service positions

Yes, but not in the way you think

[–] Matombo@feddit.org 16 points 4 days ago (1 children)

it's selling the longe gone dream of working yourself up with honest work not possible anymore in monopoly driven late stage capitalism

[–] autriyo@feddit.org 8 points 4 days ago (1 children)

That's why I hate video games - they appeal to the plebian fantasy.

Off topic somewhat, the place I work I managed to stumble upon a CRT TV with a built in VHS play which was hiding in a corner of a room nobody ever goes in, then in a completely separate part of the large site, a huge amount of old marketing VHS tapes. I got it working and was watching some old non-released TV ads from 80's and 90's. Today was a good day.

[–] StarvingMartist@sh.itjust.works 10 points 4 days ago

Currently #11 now but good to see the post wasn't lying

[–] sartalon@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago

I was a manager at Blockbusters in '93.

I'm not sure how to feel about this.

But if there is not a segment in the game where I am ordering "All Holes Filled with Hard Cock" in front of an 8 year old, or randomly locking the door to go hang out at the convenience store next door, then I am not interested.

[–] dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world 10 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I already interact with the public enough, not to mention have read enough of the Acts of Gord, to never want to run such an operation in real life.

I'll bet you punching highly deserving abusive customers square in the face doesn't get you fired as much in VR as it does in reality.

That’s the Hollywood Video floor carpet.

[–] zaphod@sopuli.xyz 6 points 4 days ago

This would be even better if it were in the style of Papers Please.

Tapper on the C-64 was my first introduction to a game based on retail work. Basically an arcade paced bartending that got quickly out of hand. Fun, but also felt too real sometimes. A modern, more realistic game might be a bit too much.

[–] spinne@sh.itjust.works 3 points 4 days ago

What a classic. There's an arcade nearby with a Tapper cabinet. There's one control, and it's a keg pull.

[–] Eh_I@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Finally, a game I can smell.

[–] IpsumLauren@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

They're unknowingly training an AI model to work in retail, for free.

[–] tomiant@piefed.social 3 points 4 days ago

Now you, too, can experience how it is to have a job!

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

As much as I like arcade paradise, I'm not sold on the visuals here.

[–] sneakypersimmon@lemmy.today 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Like Stardew Valley - farming is all the craze now lol

[–] backalleycoyote@lemmy.today 3 points 4 days ago (3 children)

I wish they’d make a simulator where you have to get your family to the farmland. Like, hunt for food, ford rivers, drown the oxen, lose half your kids to rattlesnake bites and dysentery…

[–] sneakypersimmon@lemmy.today 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I have got just the retro game for you lol

[–] backalleycoyote@lemmy.today 3 points 4 days ago

I think the Xennial craze of homesteading is a direct result of this game. This and Little House on the Prairie prepared us to handle crop failures, coyotes in the hen house, and having to care for someone in opioid withdrawal. Haven’t lost any oxen irl though.
