Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

Not a fan. I want my children to keep my bones around so that they have something for Halloween.

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 17 points 4 days ago (3 children)

Skip this step

This dissolves the body tissue, leaving only the bones - which are then rinsed at 120C, dried, and pulverised into a coarse powder using a machine called a cremulator.

Not too many -inator machines out there, glad to see the corpse disposal industry repping

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Why do I get results of soft serve ice cream machines when I search for cremulator.

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 9 points 4 days ago (1 children)

what do you think they put in it?

Soylent green ice cream!!!

(But the machine is always broken.)

[–] Evil_Shrubbery@thelemmy.club 8 points 4 days ago

Oh, there's still powdered remains. From the title I thought you'd end up in a liquid state. I was imagining a situation where someone's uncle got drunk at a family party, and then in a booze hunting frenzy accidentally drank the bottle that contained someone's mother-in-law.

[–] ThermonuclearHoxha@hexbear.net 10 points 4 days ago

Don't let that stop you. Just gotta figure out what drink to mix ashes with

[–] RION@hexbear.net 5 points 4 days ago

Using that as a chaser for my MAID cocktail

Did a water cremation for a family pet two years ago. They say it's more eco friendly than burning. Idk but it wasn't cheap

Article says it avoids 320 kg of CO2 emissions which is equivalent to 800 miles driven or about 2 weeks of a home's energy use. It's not that much, even on a personal scale. Like, you kind of save that much energy anyway by not being alive any more to use it.

Actually it only avoids 275 kg of CO2 since the electrolysis process still has some emissions.

They only give you the bone powder? What are they doing with the sludge?

[–] LeonTreatsky@hexbear.net 11 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Given that they need planning permission from Scottish Water? Sewer.

They are going to have the cleanest drains ever.

Bodies are wrapped in a shroud of biodegradable material

The powdered remains are given back to relatives in an urn.

~~What's the point of the shroud being biodegradable if you're going to keep it in an urn?~~

Actually, on second thought, they don't have to keep the remains in an urn. They can scatter them. Never mind lol

When I was looking to cremate my beloved cat, this was also an option, but I went with the traditional method.

[–] Euergetes@hexbear.net 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

are you allowed to drink the wet heap of remains or is this just a fancy way to end up with the some boring urns

[–] ThermonuclearHoxha@hexbear.net 8 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

The latter. Come to the US, and you can do it while you're alive! :)

Just throw me in a pile, omg. Who needs this convoluted process?

I was going to say that piles stink, but we already have landfills. I'll write that into my will now.
