Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

With some friendly fire, that's a funny term, like civil war.

Holy fucking shit, the "never shot down in combat" streak of the F-15 is over?

[–] bold_atlas@lemmy.world 6 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

It's not that impressive considering it came into service after Vietnam which is the last time the US faced an enemy with a real air force and effective air defenses. Not to mention the fact that the cheaper more numerous F16 has been the real work horse (and cannon fodder) of the USAF since then.

I am not aware of any F-15s having been shot down in any way before today. They blow up by themselves or snap in two sometimes but that's par for the course for any fighter jet.

[–] jason@discuss.online 5 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

Just did a quick search, and it looks like a handful were shot down during desert storm. Interestingly, 1 was shot down via sidewinder accidentally fired by a wingman during training. So, I guess the true statement should be, "never lost a dogfight?"

[–] HugeNerd@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 hour ago

Thanks, I didn't know. I just sort of picked up that "never shot down" thing... like... maybe over the last few decades? And when I googled the AI vomited up all 5673 windshield incidents, etc

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 2 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

when was the last dogfight tho, ww1?

[–] freeman@sh.itjust.works 3 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Vietnam had tons of them, enough to force F-4s to get gun pods since missiles were not ready.

Pretty sure there were dogfights in Iraq vs Iran and India vs Pakistan conflicts.

The lack of dogfights in USA's last wars are due to overwhelming differences in numbers leading to the weaker air force trying to avoid confrontation in general.

If stealth really works it certainly will favor dogfights versus bvr combat.

[–] bold_atlas@lemmy.world 1 points 53 minutes ago* (last edited 39 minutes ago)

Yeah the two gulf of Sidra incidents in 1980s are the only time US pilots have seen actual "dog fighting" since Vietnam.

It's funny how each fight last seconds and only involved only two aircraft on each side but because they're the only aerial fight the US has had post-Vietnam these two incidents are treated like the Battle of Midway or something. lol

Entire fucking books have been written on them, tactical "strategies" and techniques developed on them. Even had goddamn movies (Top Gun) made to commemorate these shoot down incidents. lol

[–] finallymadeanaccount@lemmy.world 6 points 12 hours ago

Well, in bad lighting, they can look like Venezuelan fishing boats, so ...

[–] brynden_rivers_esq@lemmy.ca 11 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

But hey, on the plus side, that means US tax dollars will have to be spent replacing these planes and that will increase GDP!

[–] ebolapie@lemmy.world 11 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

I am all aboard the Keynesian train, government spending stimulates the economy for sure. Could we maybe try spending the money on roads, bridges, education, healthcare, or even just a stupidly huge purposeless gigantic monument instead of engaging in fucking omnicide

[–] brynden_rivers_esq@lemmy.ca 5 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

lol no way bro. There's nothing more productive that an overengineered overpriced overpowered tool of destruction!

slaps roof of f-15 this baby here can fit so much omnicide in it.

[–] Wilco@lemmy.zip 3 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Let's talk about its fuel consumption! Sixty seconds of afterburner takes more fuel that an average minivan would if it drove around the entire world.

[–] brynden_rivers_esq@lemmy.ca 4 points 12 hours ago

And won't that make you feel like a MAN!? HELL yeah!

[–] gmtom@lemmy.world 57 points 20 hours ago (4 children)

I did the calculation and not factoring any fuel, ammo or maintenance, or the missiles that shit them down, each of these planes was worth about 7,500 years of healthcare for a single person

[–] daychilde@lemmy.world 5 points 13 hours ago

missiles that shit them down

What a terrible way to go for those planes, though. :(

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 22 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

About $300 million dollars shot down.

“Oops.”

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 10 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

Why would the people at the top of this circus care about a measley $300M when they can just tax the poor and cut essential social services in order to expand the military budget an extra $500B?

What about the cost to train the LLM that identified the jets as targets?

[–] floquant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 3 hours ago

That one is measured in Celsius, not dollars

[–] electric_nan@lemmy.ml 3 points 13 hours ago

Too bad the pilots are okay.

[–] LoafedBurrito@lemmy.world 5 points 14 hours ago

Donald Trump's fault. All of this is his fault.

[–] AbsolutelyNotAVelociraptor@piefed.social 70 points 1 day ago (7 children)

[–] ThePantser@sh.itjust.works 33 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Down another 500 as of today.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 19 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 23 points 1 day ago (4 children)

"""Friendly fire incident"""

[–] Ironfist79@lemmy.world 30 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Let me guess, Claude said to shoot them down.

[–] Orygin@sh.itjust.works 30 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

I think that was a friendly plane

You're absolutely right, that was indeed a friendly American f-15 plane we shot down. Would you like me to make a note not to shoot friendly planes in the future? ⚡ 💪

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 7 points 21 hours ago

I'd say "call in the clowns" but we already did that.

Disgrace of a nation.

[–] UnspecificGravity@piefed.social 6 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Proper IFF and allied coordination is too woke for Petey.

[–] Glytch@lemmy.world 2 points 15 hours ago

They've replaced IFF with Grok so why would they need to coordinate with allies?

[–] vga@sopuli.xyz 11 points 1 day ago

Great allies there.
