the server cost could not go on without ads or users donations. rip lemmynsfw

[–] Skavau@piefed.social 3 points 4 hours ago

It's the other admin from lemmynsfw who has taken it up.

[–] moopet@sh.itjust.works 14 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

Does this mean I have to go through blocking 9348934 communities by hand again?

[–] irelephant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Just block the instance, it gets rid of all the communities, but not users yet.

[–] moopet@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 hours ago (3 children)

... you can't block instances unless you're self-hosting, though?

[–] UltraGiGaGigantic@lemmy.ml 2 points 10 minutes ago

Welcome to a tutorial on how to block .ml on your personal account.

In the top right corner of the top of the page, there are 3 horizontal white bars. Click it.

This will open up a drop down menu. At the bottom of that menu, you will see your username. Click it.

This will open another drop down menu with 3 options. Click "Settings".

At the top of your screen you will see 2 tabs. Click the one that says "Blocks".

Here you will see "Block user" "Block community" and "Block instance". Click the down arrow below "Block instance".

This will open up a search bar. Type "lemmy.ml" and click it after it shows up.

That's it! You've blocked .ml and will never see content from the instance. Now you don't need to make a feud post every day complaining about .ml and other instances you disapprove of. Think of all the time you will save!

But wait, we aren't done yet in this menu. Click the down arrow under "Block user". Now type "UltraGiGaGigantic" Make sure you select my .ml account as the other ones I no longer use. Thanks, appreciate it.

you mean defederation

Check settings/blocks

[–] mech@feddit.org 4 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

Just remove the checkmark on "Show NSFW content" in your settings.

[–] moopet@sh.itjust.works 6 points 6 hours ago

I don't mind NSFW content - after all, it's a broad category - I just don't want a firehose of porn and gore. Some days that's all that's in my feed, and I have to open each one in turn to block the community.

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 2 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

I think they mean as a self-hosting admin

[–] Vile_port_aloo@lemmy.world 3 points 9 hours ago

I think they also really enjoy skimming through soo many communities ; )

[–] mech@feddit.org 1 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago) (1 children)

As a self-hosting admin, they can just defederate the instance.
Also, they aren't the admin of their home instance.

[–] moopet@sh.itjust.works 2 points 6 hours ago

I'm not self-hosting.

[–] CountryBreakfast@lemmygrad.ml 1 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Considering the Epstein situation, and the general horrors of the sex trade, what the fuck are you talking about?

[–] aeration1217@lemmy.org 1 points 1 hour ago

a bunch of NSFW communities recently went away due to a server going down, but apparently a new one exists

despite the epstein horrors, people still want their legal smut

[–] BinzyBoi@piefed.ca 16 points 20 hours ago

I never used lemmynsfw much, but honestly I think things moving from Lemmy to PieFed is a positive move in general.

[–] roserose56@lemmy.zip 31 points 1 day ago (5 children)

Yea I noticed this one too. The thing here is for the users to help with the costs, otherwise it's gonna end like lemmynsfw.

[–] Mac@mander.xyz 3 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

I also noticed. lol

Tap for spoiler

[–] menas@lemmy.wtf 3 points 13 hours ago

Duknow. I found it weird to call for subscription when we don't pay the sex workers

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 62 points 1 day ago (12 children)

AFAIK lemmynsfw ended like it did because the main admin disappeared.

[–] XiELEd@piefed.social 34 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Ironically it demonstrates what happens when something is too centralised

[–] OpenStars@piefed.social 31 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

I wouldn't say it was centralized. They repeatedly begged over and over for volunteers to help moderate and even administrate the instance. Nobody stepped up, it seems.

They reached out to the community. The community declined their requests.

[–] TexasDrunk@lemmy.world 40 points 22 hours ago

One guy stepped up as an admin. It's the owner of the new instance. He didn't have the necessary access to go in and pay the bills or have the deep server level access to fix things that went wrong.

He's got a plan for his backup admins.

Lemmy Sync doesn't seem to work with Piefed though. I'm still sad.

What I would really like is the opposite of a porn or nsfw filter. I want a filter so I can see only nsfw posts. Do any apps have this?

[–] blackn1ght@feddit.uk 2 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Lemmy Sync will probably stop working when Lemmy 1.0 is released. It hasn't had any updates for a long time.

[–] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

I hadn't paid attention, but yeah I guess you're right. I'll have to start trying out other apps. Any suggestions?

[–] blackn1ght@feddit.uk 2 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Personally I use Voyager, a few teaks and it looks similar to Sync, but it's perhaps missing that 1% of polish that Sync has. Overall I'm happy with it though.

Might also be worth checking out Lemmy Apps which could help you narrow down your choices!

[–] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

I'm trying out Voyager right now. It seems to be missing the swipe navigation that I used a lot in Sync.

[–] emeralddawn45@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 minute ago* (last edited 47 seconds ago)

Connect is an amazing app, made by my a very responsive dev from Canada. There's no ads and it's frequently updated, I raised a couple issues in the app community and they were fixed immediately, and it's super customizable. I tried most of the Lemmy apps and it's my favourite by far, oh and it also has swipe gestures that you can customize.

[–] es_eskaliert@feddit.org 2 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Eternity has such a feature, "Only NSFW" is it called in the filter menu. Works okay-ish as in that it takes some time to load (I assume it has to load the whole feed and then locally filter out SFW posts)

[–] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago) (1 children)

Well, I'm definitely going to give this a try. Thanks

Edit: Its last update was Aug 2024. Not sure if it is going to stick around.

[–] es_eskaliert@feddit.org 1 points 3 hours ago

Been using it since i created my account, without issues.

[–] OpenStars@piefed.social 3 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago) (1 children)

~~PieFed allows this to be set for your user account, which should thereafter work for any app that supports PieFed.~~
See screenshots in https://piefed.social/c/piefed_meta/p/1626487/more-search-options-nsfw-and-minimum-post-score.

Edit: okay I forgot entirely how this works (it's a search filter, not a user profile one), but that post explains it regardless.
