I’m Swiss, but I was born and raised in the Gulf states. When I visit Switzerland during the cold season, I immediately become depressed, irritable, and in a bad mood. I prefer the heat 100%. I don’t think I could live in a place with a cold climate and be happy.

I'd consider vitamin D levels as a possible factor. Deficiency can make you feel that kind of bad and it tends to be an issue around this time of year. Less sun exposure chokes off its production and we've had a few months to burn through what gets stashed away in warmer times.

[–] Otherbarry@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

That was my first thought too. My understanding is that Nordic countries do think about vitamin D deficiency (especially this time of year) so it's common to see stuff like cod liver oil and other ways to supplement vitamin D, besides just eating fish. Figured Switzerland would be similar.

I love all four seasons, it's usually the darkness and wind that gets me. But nothing that a bit of vitamin D can't help fix.

Winter is great at times, I love freshly falling snow, running in it especially. But by this time of the year, the magic has worn off, 6 months of snow and ice and slush here. We don't even have it that bad either comparitively.

I love all the weather. The single issue I have is strong wind when I'm home. I live in woods and the wind wrecks the older trees. I've already had a 10m upper trunk section destroy my roof a couple of years ago. So I get nervous when the wind is strong.

Other than that I love being outside regardless of weather. It's all good.

[–] Tower@lemmy.zip 1 points 16 hours ago

Agreed. I enjoy basically everything except a cold wind. A cold, still day in the snow? Lovely. Being out in the rain? Sucks but bearable, as long as there's no wind. A warm spring/summer breeze? Absolutely amazing. Just no fucking cold wind, please.

[–] AstroLightz@lemmy.world 2 points 19 hours ago

A nice, cold, cloudy day is what I enjoy. Bonus points for rain or snow. I can't stand the heat or sunny days: too bright.

[–] Routhinator@startrek.website 3 points 20 hours ago

Thats exactly how I feel about heat.

[–] sparkles@piefed.zip 3 points 20 hours ago

Not a fan of the hot summer sun. All the other seasons come with a variety of emotions and nostalgic feelings at times, in very small amounts that are manageable to process/ignore. Peak summer hurts my eyes and makes me physically uncomfortable, fear being sweaty/stinky…yeah I think it’s a genuinely annoying season.

I was born and raised in northern Alberta and I hate the cold too. For me it's just the pain of waiting on the side of a road for a bus that's already twenty minutes late or sitting in the cab of your truck at -35°C waiting for it to warm up so you don't bust the engine. I hate the heat also though, it could sometimes get up to +35°C in my hometown, so like a 100 degree temperature difference... it really sucked and you can't escape the heat, at least not with the places I was able to rent back then.

The lack of sun doesn't effect me that much, but maybe that's because mushrooms are always a part of my diet. In fact, my favourite days are damp and overcast, which is why I live on the coast now and love it except for the high unemployment. ;-;

[–] Broadfern@lemmy.world 2 points 19 hours ago

I was raised in Northern US. My ancestry mainly comes from the Mediterranean. I don’t understand why they moved there, because I was a shell of myself for like 6 months of the year.

I moved to a warmer climate and still can’t function until it hits like 65°F/19°C with sunlight. I can do as low as 70°F/21°C with overcast and rain.

I also can’t do dry air. I need humidity or my asthma flares up bad. My favorite days are 85°F/29°C+ with overcast drizzle or sunshine and minimal breeze. I can finally breathe and my body stops hurting.

Like most of the US, we had a weeks long cold spell with average temperatures around 5-10° F. It started to really affect my psyche. It was followed by a sprout of really mild winter weather, getting up to 60°. It snowed a bunch last night but it's supposed to warm back up this week.

I couldn't even get up my street for most of the cold weather due to a foot of snow that wasn't melting. So I was parking under a bridge and walking like 5-10 minutes each way thru the woods every time I went to work, which has been 7 day weeks lately.

I finally got some crucial insulating done at my house but there was some bad drafts and stupid shit I found behind the walls of just holes out to nothing. Which the house is right up against a story tall retaining wall so it was almost impossible to see from the outside. There's like maybe a foot between the wall and the house.

I love rain and wind and storms and meteorological violence. I am calmest at weather Morticia Addams would have a picnic in. Shit needs to be falling from the sky.

[–] JakoJakoJako13@piefed.social 2 points 20 hours ago

Quick winter days depress the hell out of me. I need a baseline of 12 hours of sunlight.

Snow and rain. Love it. Takes all the pressure off of doing anything.

Long hot summer days also depress the fuck out of me but I can mitigate that a billion different ways.

Fall days are my comfort zone. I usually feel my best around September through November. The temp goes down. I can still wear shorts but it's also not mind numbingly hot. My birthday and the holidays fall in that period. Usually the middle of December when it's cold and dark by 4 my mood goes down.

Foggy days make me want to carry a machete around and hunt monsters in an abandoned town.

Anything > 20C makes me miserable, as I can't wear an oversized hoodie to hide my body, and I still sweat in just a shirt. My habit of only drinking during meals, and eating those very irregularly, as well as only drinking non-sparkling water, really fucks me up there, and I can't be outside, in uncontrolled environments, for long.

So, therefore, I love the > 0, < 10 weather the most, maybe some light rain (and audible rain during the night). Snow etc. is very nice, including the darkness, but ig it does hit my body and sleep cycle pretty hard.

[–] UnGlasierteGurke@feddit.org 1 points 23 hours ago

same but I also love heavy rain and snow, fog and (thunder) storms, and I'm pretty sure darkness affects me less

[–] NoblityAbility@lemmy.world 3 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago)

Extremely. The sun is what makes life beautiful. Without the sun, There is no energy to go outside. It increases happiness in general. I really like the summer and the heat. In winter, stay at home mode. Clouds gives the feeling of closing, while the sun and the open sky invites you to go outside. The ocean is also the favorite environment. Sailing, swimming, diving, you name it.

East of France weather summary

spring: Sun is coming back !! Green is coming back, Temperature is okay. I start sweating though, but it's bearable

summer: All hot and no rain make myself sweaty and tired. Temperature is >30°C and not under 20°C during the night, I'm dying.

fall: Nice colours, nice temperature and some sun, I like it, people start judging me for wearing shorts.

winter: All dark and no sun make myself depressed. Temperature is nice though, after some weeks I resigned myself to start wearing pants (don't forget your vitamins D supplements people!)

[–] Curious_Canid@piefed.ca 0 points 15 hours ago

Fall is probably my favorite season, followed closely by winter. I do use full-spectrum lights to compensate for the shorter days, but overall I think my mood is better during that time. Winter in a forest is one of the most beautiful things in the world.

I grew up in the northern US, but around 40, I moved to Florida. I hate the politics, but I prefer the weather.

On one hand, it seems shallow to decide your life based on weather, but on the other hand, weather dominates every day of your life. If you wake up to bad weather, you're probably not going to have a great day. Can you recall any GREAT days of your life that include bad weather?

I lived in Cleveland, where the average weather for about 6 month of the year is 38°F and rainy, and the other six months it's just rainy. Literally 5 days out of every week sucks, and the other two days aren't special either.

It's hot in Florida, but at least it's sunny.

[–] felixwhynot@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

If it’s foggy then we should drink tea

[–] daggermoon@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I hate sunlight. I like darkness. I love the cold. I love snow. I love winter. I don't much like rain. I have extreme depression so it's hard for me to tell if the weather affects it but I'm sad if I can't walk at night. I fucking hate the heat. I hate sweating.

[–] BurgerBaron@piefed.social 1 points 22 hours ago

This except I'm usually okay in the winter. The hot discomfort of summer is when I get seasonal depression.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 1 day ago

winter/ rain wreaks havoc on my dermatitis.

"It was a dark and story night... and I don't wanna go on anymore"

-Last journal entry

But since you mentioned nationality, this reminds me:

Every time there is snowing, it reminds of the the happiness and novelty I felt when I first arrived in the US and saw snow in NYC. I was from southern China and never saw snow before.

My brain now correlated "Snow" = "NYC 2010"

So snow sometimes can bring happiness... but its more like nostalgia then I miss childhood and get depressed I can't be a child anymore... just not have any expectations of you.

I can't stand the heat (and stay the fuck out the kitchen) for real though 21 degrees is perfect, any more and it's groin soup.

[–] LeapSecond@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

Gloomy weather itself doesn't make me depressed but the sun always makes me feel better and it's something you need sometimes. Also being in the cold for a long time starts to hurt after a while so that could also make you irritable.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 1 points 23 hours ago

Being hot pisses me off.

[–] trd@feddit.nu 1 points 1 day ago

I consider my self quite a happy person, but I do belive I'm cursed. I struggle with sun and heat, and snow, everything just gets harder to do with snow around. This might seem like a non issue, but living quite far north this gives some issues, snow in winter and constant sun in summer. So I prefer the spring and autumn. But I dont let it affect my mood I think the vitamin D issue keeps popping up, the intake of C and D vitamins increase from November to April, also suppliment with cod oil.

[–] Eyekaytee@aussie.zone 1 points 1 day ago

yeah 100%, i run cold so I much prefer warmer weather over cold, I would be miserable in Melbourne compared to where I am now (Brisbane)
