The AC system is electric in the Prius. It doesn't just kick-in when stopped. Its electric all the time. If the battery goes low, then the engine is turned on.
The whole thing is a lie. My conventionally attractive hetero wife wanted a hybrid Toyota minivan over a Tahoe. It hauls ass, AC traction motors provide instant torque from a stop and the engine fires up while spinning - zero lag. 100% smooth acceleration. Priuses surely work exactly the same way.

My brother is planning on a sienna as the ultimate camper van. Big enough to kit out as a camper, efficient enough to travel widely, tons of range to actually get there, drives like a car. Easily converted back to car when he wants to sell. Apparently it even has dog mode or camp mode or similar, so he can choose to use the hvac at a campground without a noisy generator

A special mode to let you leave your dog in the car. Typically hvac on so the animal doesn’t freeze or overheat, possibly locked controls and internal alarm sensors so animal can’t get in trouble, soothing music if you want it, and a message lit up on the screen so any concerned citizens know the animal is ok.
Camp mode is somewhat similar idea but humans don’t need the lit up screen. Usually turns off interior lights so someone can go out to the bathroom in the middle of the night without the lights coming on while everyone is sleeping

Right, but if you turn off auto startstop then turn the ignition off and on again, auto startstop will be on again. You can (pay someone to) mod the ECU to have auto startstop off by default. It's not super common though.
I drive a newish Chinese car and it does not reset from factory. The button has a persistent state and I have to go through 3 menus on the touch screen to toogle it. Drives me mad as I want to disable the start-stop very rarely in humid conditions and remembering to turn it back on is a chore.
I once rented the cheapest three cylinder Renault to drive in the mountainous terrain in 40 degree heat. The car barely managed to go uphill but not once I had problems with the AC or the start stop system. In the heat the car would stop the engine and then turn it back on as soon as temperature deviated from the set target. This would repeat two to three times, then it would just preemptively show a message on the screen saying "prioritizing thermal comfort" when stopped. The start-stop would resume as usual when it got cooler, no input was required at all.
Never got the hate for the feature, you just have to remember to jerk the steering wheel a bit before the light change if starting 1.5 seconds earlier is critical.
At least some of the problems that are reported from auto start stop are because people don't understand that battery load can cause it to not operate at all (I. e. not stop the vehicle running) meaning they don't get the cost savings on gas. Or that eventually your battery will need to be changed and it needs to be an AGM battery.
Every other time I've seen there be a problem it was because something was badly manufactured and there was a subsequent recall.

I hit the gas since it was now clear for plenty of time till the next car. It didn’t move. I hit the gas harder. Nothing. Now it’s starting to get questionable with the approaching car. Hit the gas harder. Then the engine finally kicks on when I’m in the accelerator about 50-75%. The vehicle squeals its tires as it pulls away. The sales person doesn’t really say anything from the passenger seat. That was my first and last time dealing with start/stop. I bought the other motor option.
That sounds like a defect. It obviously shouldn't happen in a new or even used car being sold by a dealer.
In any case, I'm not really defending Auto Start/Stop so much as I'm pointing out that the problems with it are either recall/manufacturer defect related or user ignorance.
The only reason it exists is to give better fuel efficiency (and less emissions) because that's a regulation through the NTSB. So I do wonder (if they did get rid of the requirement) how car companies would work within the ever more stringent fuel efficiency requirements.
At this rate my guess is Hybrids or full electric vehicles.

That feels more like shitty electronics rather than something inherent for start stop. Sometimes my car fails to figure out that it's time to engage the clutch and I'm sitting and revving like an idiot without moving. Modern cars are terrible, unfortunately, parts for older cars are terrible as well.
The car from that story is my only automatic and it was a brand new vehicle. Everything else I own is a manual. They work exactly how I want all the time. I’m sad they’re dying out or at the bear minimum moving to crazy expensive sport models.
My grandfather was an automotive engineer and when I was 12 or so and he taught me to drive, he said that he didn't spend 30 years designing automatic transmissions so that I had to learn to drive manual. So I never did. He taught me many things and I can probably still replace the clutch or broken synchromeshes in a manual, but driving one is something I never got to.
Sometimes I get a weird fixation with hatchbacks from the 80s and the manual transmission is the only thing that stops me from buying though.
So many levels of wrong. That's a gen 2, maybe 3 Prius. Both of which have instant electric torque and scroll style AC compressors which run with the engine off. Excellent cars which are still good value today.
Can confirm. Drive a '14 Gen 3 and it's been pretty damn reliable in the ~10 years I've owned it. Looking at a midrange EV in the next year or two tho. Got the Prius cuz I was driving 90 miles a day. I drive maybe 15 now.

Perhaps my Prius is different but the AC doesn't turn off when I stop. When the car is not demanding power it runs off the battery this includes the AC. The engine comes on when I sit for too long but I assume that would be the case with any start stop system. With the windows are down your not going to get much cooling anyway. The age of that Prius could also do with a refilling the AC coolers if they are not getting the temp down. This is such a weird point to run on and one that has been solved with newer cars.
No car does this, not even my purely internal combustion engine car that's 10+ years old. This is a generated video that is promoting a fake solution to a fake problem as a real distraction.

I’m not a fan of auto start and stop but I think it’s because I am older. I never owned a reliable car before 2003 so it’s pretty ingrained in my head that when the engine unexpectedly shuts off, it may not start again. I think it’s a trauma response to owning pieces of shit for a decent chunk of my life.
My 100k+ mile can can attest that Auto stop has little to do with car lifespan. I've never even needed to replace the starter.
I drive a 2016 Audi A3 and the auto start stop feature was really janky. The engine always came back on but it was sluggish to do so and a bit jerky. I programmed the ECU to disable it and the car drives quite a bit better as a result. Not sure if it's just a clunky early implementation of the feature on my car or what
I hate auto stop. It always freaks me out and I dislike how the AC stops working when I stop at a light. So, I did something about it and got an EV. Bonus points, my EV does 0-60 in 2.6 seconds which is far faster than any sportscar I've ever been on, including Ferraris.
I did also the first time I used startstop, but that was more than a decade ago. Even back then it eventually came back on for the ac - just allowed a larger than normal temperature change. I’m sure they’ve gotten better but even back then you do more or less get used to it. Eventually. Combining that with series hybrid or plugin hybrid should make it really shine.
