Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

[her] prominent public presence indicates she is the chosen heir

What possible reason could a man have to spend time with his daughter, if not to train her to be an evil dictator? He couldn't possibly just enjoy spending time with his family!

You guys joke but I'm old enough to remember when people saw the passing of Kim Jong Il with hope, wondering if perhaps his son would do better than his father did. It's been disappointment after disappointment, and now horror, but we all still remember the days when the dream that one day North Korea would sell out to us, would one day disarm themselves and allow us to murder their people again was still believed to be achievable. Now, I think most of us have become jaded; I don't think anyone from my generation believes Kim Jong Un will allow us to exterminate more of his people and to poison his home. You are all lucky you have Maria Corina Machado while our parents had Kissinger, but Kim Jong Un is no Nobel Peace prize winner.

Girldad Kim jong un juche-rose

[–] allthetimesivedied2@hexbear.net 10 points 17 hours ago

Ju Ae is the only known child of Kim Jong Un and his wife, Ri Sol Ju. The NIS believes Kim Jong Un has an older son, but this son has never been acknowledged nor shown on North Korean media.

He's a Redditor.

By occupied Korea's logic, Ivanka Trump has been chosen as Donald Trump's heir because of how often she has appeared in high profile public events with him and how she is also allowed to wear designer clothes that are out of reach for most Americans.

Hell, Hillary fucking Clinton was meant to be the chosen heir to the Presidency after Bush Jr. but was snubbed twice partly due to America's entrenched traditional gender roles lmao.

[–] HarryLime@hexbear.net 60 points 23 hours ago (3 children)

I'm just going to guess that this did not happen and the daughter just appeared in some public events or something

[–] ClathrateG@hexbear.net 46 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago) (3 children)

Yep that's essentially it

Kim Ju Ae - who is believed to be 13 - has in recent months been pictured beside her father in high-profile events like a visit to Beijing in September, her first known trip abroad.

The National Intelligence Service (NIS) said it took a "range of circumstances" into account including her increasingly prominent public presence at official events" in making this assessment.

....

On Thursday lawmaker Lee Seong-kwen told reporters that Ju Ae, who was previously described by the NIS as being "trained" to be a successor, was now at the stage of "successor designation".

"As Kim Ju Ae has shown her presence at various events, including the founding anniversary of the Korean People's Army and her visit to the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun, and signs have been detected of her voicing her opinion on certain state policies, the NIS believes she has now entered the stage of being designated as successor," Lee said.

All just Collaborator Korea officials making inferences from her appearing in public nothing concrete

Member a few years ago when Kim(Jong Un) hadn't made a public appearance in like a week and the western MSM was salivating over his sister being the sexy new dictator?

her increasingly prominent public presence at official events

She's 13 and therefore getting to the age where she might be more interested in her dad's work and more able to appreciate it, as opposed to a younger kid who would find it all very boring?

No, obviously she's preparing to take over the expansive North Korean Empire.

You say this mockingly but Kim Jong Un was elected because he had experience leading the Korean People's Army by attending military inspections with his father. People of DPRK trusted Kim Jong Un because of his relationship with the KPA.

Since Kim Jong Un's daughter is attending the same military inspections, it could indicate that she will be his successor because she will be trusted in the same way.

I am not implying that DPRK is a monarchy. I am saying that people of DPRK would be more inclined to trust a leader who was trained by the previous leader that they liked.

This is reported by KCNA in 2011, which is a news agency in DPRK. KCNAwatch is archival service, unrelated to DPRK.

[–] HarryLime@hexbear.net 12 points 21 hours ago

Sure, but that's a long way from saying she's already been chosen as the next leader.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

[–] larrikin99@hexbear.net 12 points 19 hours ago

Maybe they're taking about Kims personal estate passing to her. Valued at approximately $35,000 plus a vintage leather coat collection.

[–] dead@hexbear.net 7 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Out of curiosity, how do you think that the successor of Kim Jong Un will be chosen? Also, do you read DPRK media?

[–] ClathrateG@hexbear.net 27 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago) (1 children)

imo from a joint decision between the leadership of the WPK, the Chondoist party and the Korean SuccDems, the same as how previous heads of state were picked, members of the Kim family having a distinct advantage in this process by having the backing of the public due to their proven anti-imperialist credentials dating back to at least the era of Japanese occupation, over less well known, and possibly western compromised candidates

I read DPRK media, imo there's been nothing published by them to think Ju He is more a likely choice than other candidates(even if objectively she likely has a greater chance of succeeding), had you garnered a different answer from your own reading of their output? could you link anything if so

[–] dead@hexbear.net 11 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

members of the Kim family having a distinct advantage in this process by having the backing of the public due to their proven anti-imperialist credentials dating back to least the Japanese occupation

I agree with this. In my other comment, I pointed out that Kim Jong Un was a preferred successor because of his experience with the KPA, reported by KCNA. Kim Jong Un attended military inspections with his father Kim Jong Il.

Kim's daughter is never mentioned by named in KCNA reports, at least from what I can tell but she is frequently seen in the photos of military inspections. I've seen many people mistake that Kim's daughter for his wife in photos. I've seen his wife in photos only very rarely, but his daughter appears in photos frequently.

My inference based on this information, is that Kim Jong Un is taking his daughter to these military inspections because he wants to give her the same qualification that he had. It seems like Kim Jong Un is training his daughter to be his successor. It's not guaranteed that she will be.

I'm with HER!

[–] AstroStelar@hexbear.net 31 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

They claim to be sure for various reasons but all the article provides is that she often appears next to her dad and has started speaking her mind sometimes.

The first one could simply be because Kim wants to take his daughter around now as a family man. The second one could simply be that she's old enough now to start engaging with politics. She certainly would be trained for politics at some level.

Some highlights:

In North Korea, where photos published by the state media are believed to carry a great symbolic weight, it is rare for individuals other than Kim Jong Un to be positioned equally prominently in the frame.

Same people that thought Xi having two teacups was a "power play", just orientalism. Also yeonmi-park

She is often seen wearing her hair long, which is forbidden for her peers, and wearing designer clothes, which are out of reach for most in her country.

Still on about the haircuts? Also where are designer clothes not out of reach for most people, let alone a country that has to deal underhanded because of sanctions?

Many defectors and analysts had previously dismissed the idea of a woman leading North Korea as an unlikely scenario, referring to the country's entrenched traditional gender roles.

Hell Joseon has had a female president ffs

[–] dead@hexbear.net 10 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

I'm going to have see this reported by DPRK media before I consider it to be confirmed. However, it has been long suspected that Kim's daughter was being trained to work as a leader because she appears in all of KJU's photos of the past 2-3 years. She attends every public appearance with Kim Jong Un.

[–] purpleworm@hexbear.net 6 points 18 hours ago

There's a good chance that she does end up next assuming KJU doesn't die too early or something, but there's a difference between laying groundwork for that purpose and "chooses daughter as heir," as though he made some public proclamation or something.
