My thought was Kratom. My dad takes it to help his depression, lately though I think it’s turned into an addiction. I think it’s more of a personal addiction though. Like getting addicted to the effect of pills rather than the pill itself

Don't try it unless you're already hooked on something stronger or have godlike self-control. The problem with it is two-fold: effect strength and availability. Honestly even codeine is a better "try and forget" option if you're that curious, bc of these 2 reasons. Way weaker, annoying to extract, pretty low ceiling dose regardless of it's form.

But honestly just stay the fuck away from opiates, there's so much more shit that's not gonna ruin you like they can.

Is Kratom an opioid? I’ve never had any plans to even consider it, but I had no idea it was one. Those issues you described though make a lot of sense on how he got hooked. He’s never had good self control and it’s easily available where I am

Someone made this video that's a pretty decent watch

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse: while Kratom isn't an opioid, it can cause "opioid-like" and "stimulant-like" effects in the brain by activating "mu-opioid receptors"

[–] QuinnyCoded@sh.itjust.works 2 points 14 hours ago

technically no, but essentially yes

[–] real_squids@sopuli.xyz 3 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago)

Yep, it's method of action is different but the end result is the same

edit: if he's still on powdered form, I can't recommend a short break enough. Even if it's just a week or two. Would be a good time to heal up the liver too.
If that doesn't work, slowly (and i do mean extremely slowly) lowering the dosage could work.
Different people work differently, some quit cold turkey and prefer that to weaning off. That is if you're in contact and he's willing to do it.

Like getting addicted to the effect of pills rather than the pill itself

what

[–] gray@lemmy.ml 1 points 5 hours ago

Physical addiction vs psychological addiction. Physical addiction gives withdrawal and in the worst cases might kill you e.g morphin. Psychological addiction is when you feel like you cannot live without it or you're not yourself without it. E.g. weed or anabolic steroids for some people. Many drugs are a little bit of both and both should be taken seriously.

[–] MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world 4 points 17 hours ago (2 children)

I’m not really sure how to put it into words. I think the words I’m looking for are a dependence vs. an addiction.

Dependence is like withdrawals and stuff from the chemical, while addiction is his brain is hooked on the effect that comes from taking it

[–] EmpathicVagrant@lemmy.world 2 points 13 hours ago

So basically those are the two types of addiction. Iirc there’s either chemical or mental addiction where you can develop a dependence in either or both.

[–] real_squids@sopuli.xyz 2 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

I think you're mixing up physical and mental dependence. Opioids can legitimately help to the point that you depend on them to fix whatever you thought was unfixable (like anxiety, pain etc), physical dependence is taking it just so you feel normal and don't go thru withdrawals.
At any rate I hope he finds something that works without the horrible downsides of opis

[–] MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago

Yeah. I think you have explained it far better than I have. I believe he has a mental dependency to it.

I hope he’s able to find something to. We’ve tried to help him but he’s made it clear he doesn’t want or think he needs help. So the best I can do is be supportive towards his mental health and hope he realizes he needs help

Maturity is overrated. Don't do drugs though, it's not worth it.

Smoking is bad for you. Edibles is the way to go.

[–] real_squids@sopuli.xyz 4 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Remove alcohol, replace with pregaba or nicotine at least. Alcohol is a shit tier drug and I will die on that hill.

[–] Someonelol@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

A little bit of fancy liquor in a while won't kill you. It's drinking every day that'll do it though.

[–] real_squids@sopuli.xyz 3 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

Fancy liquor still tastes like liquor and works like liquor, ew. I can tolerate brandy cola for example but why drink that when you've got other options?

[–] cattywampas@lemmy.world 3 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

Because every drug is different and many people enjoy the effects of alcohol.

[–] real_squids@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 hour ago

Because they don't know better. That's my point. It sucks even in it's class imo

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago

And some people enjoy the flavor

[–] Someonelol@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 15 hours ago

At least we can agree you can tolerate the taste of liquor to some degree. The difference is some of the more expensive stuff tastes leagues better than their cheap counterparts. Some of the cheaper stuff is pretty good too like a vanilla Crown Royal with soda water. I'm not saying get drunk or anything, but there's a certain life experience one can miss out by never trying alcoholic beverages.

Some of us call that adulting.
