Like getting addicted to the effect of pills rather than the pill itself

what

[–] gray@lemmy.ml 1 points 8 hours ago

Physical addiction vs psychological addiction. Physical addiction gives withdrawal and in the worst cases might kill you e.g morphin. Psychological addiction is when you feel like you cannot live without it or you're not yourself without it. E.g. weed or anabolic steroids for some people. Many drugs are a little bit of both and both should be taken seriously.

I’m not really sure how to put it into words. I think the words I’m looking for are a dependence vs. an addiction.

Dependence is like withdrawals and stuff from the chemical, while addiction is his brain is hooked on the effect that comes from taking it

[–] EmpathicVagrant@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago

So basically those are the two types of addiction. Iirc there’s either chemical or mental addiction where you can develop a dependence in either or both.

I think you're mixing up physical and mental dependence. Opioids can legitimately help to the point that you depend on them to fix whatever you thought was unfixable (like anxiety, pain etc), physical dependence is taking it just so you feel normal and don't go thru withdrawals.
At any rate I hope he finds something that works without the horrible downsides of opis

Yeah. I think you have explained it far better than I have. I believe he has a mental dependency to it.

I hope he’s able to find something to. We’ve tried to help him but he’s made it clear he doesn’t want or think he needs help. So the best I can do is be supportive towards his mental health and hope he realizes he needs help
