A nice place to discuss rumors, happenings, innovations, and challenges in the technology sphere. We also welcome discussions on the intersections of technology and society. If it’s technological news or discussion of technology, it probably belongs here.

Remember the overriding ethos on Beehaw: Be(e) Nice. Each user you encounter here is a person, and should be treated with kindness (even if they’re wrong, or use a Linux distro you don’t like). Personal attacks will not be tolerated.

Please remember as people are looking for places to go to be kind. The reason Linux took so long to "take off" is because us linux folks (myself included) were proud of the high bar to entry. Encourage people to be curious, help them learn the ropes, don't bog them down with technical details or the battles that have been taking place on X technology over Y technology. Offer an open easy place for them to come talk.

Once they get the foot in the door for a few months we can show them how awesome Linux is!

But X technology is inferior to Y technology and if they don't know that they're not real Linux users!!!!!

If we don't warn them about it they'll obviously be unhappy they should knowww!

(In reality they get confused, they leave, and then they keep using the corpo controlled version)

To be fair, Linux is in a super tough place right now as it shifts from a windowing system to a completely different one.

And guess which one of those windowing systems is very unfriendly to Discord...

This is going to be such a pain in the ass. They already have had issues with security. This is such a massive can of worms

[–] Powderhorn@beehaw.org 13 points 1 day ago (3 children)

I don't use Discord for adult content, so it sounds like I won't really be affected. But they're sure as hell not getting my face or ID.

What about the model reading your messages

[–] Powderhorn@beehaw.org 6 points 23 hours ago

Always assume anything you post outside of some messaging apps has hit the public domain and will be used, sold and targeted. This is scarcely a Discord-only problem.

[–] scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Neither do I, but from other platforms it's only a matter of time until you're prompted for it. You join a server where someone has posted something NSFW before, or the server admin "to be safe" set it to adults only, or they just clamp down on the definition of adults only. At some point I fully expect it'll force me to.

I wonder if my MIL's mugshot would be good enough.

[–] remington@beehaw.org 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This probably will end up being the case for most people

Until Discord starts classifying anything and everything as adult content, TikTok style. Can't curse, can't talk about any form of violence. Good luck talking about most video games when you can't say "gun", "kill" or "die".

[–] tryplot@piefed.ca 7 points 1 day ago

ah crap, I play archipelago randomizers, and the communication, and notifications for updates are exclusively through discord.

they're not getting my face or ID, but when we start to refer to the pokemon move water gun as water pew, I may need to stop.

[–] Nomad@infosec.pub 10 points 1 day ago

Perfect timing. They mailed me yesterday about them deleting my account soon for inactivity.

There's IRC, and we could link to fedi content.

[–] B0rax@feddit.org 2 points 1 day ago

There is also matrix

[–] Randomgal@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

When it's financially viable.

[–] XLE@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The incredible thing about federation is that it's done in a volunteer basis despite the fact it isn't financially viable. This is high praise for Lemmy, but not so much for Matrix.

[–] Randomgal@lemmy.ca -1 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

I'm not sure 'in runs on unpaid labor's is the flex you think it is.

That's just a cute way of writing 'it runs on exploitation'

[–] XLE@piefed.social 2 points 19 hours ago

I'm sorry if my comment wasn't clear - I don't believe I'm entitled to free things and free labor. I'm just surprised and humbled by the fact that so many people are willing to provide it.

Revolt (now Stoat) is an option, personally I don't like it because there is no federation and it's text-only.

I'm using Matrix, with Element, which does have encrypted voice chat if you set it up. I want federation because I don't want my users to be locked into only my server. However, the bar for entry is higher.

[–] Quexotic@beehaw.org 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah, it really is. I feel like if I have trouble getting it to work, my friends have no hope.

... I mean, I did get it to work but the struggle was real.

[–] scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Best I've done is try to minimize the hassle by hosting myself, and giving a how-to guide. My group is small, I've been sitting down individually with them showing them how to migrate

[–] Quexotic@beehaw.org 6 points 1 day ago

I appreciate your efforts and good on you for doing this but I don't have time to do that with hundreds of people.

It's just not ready for production yet.

I actually just went and checked to see if I had any messages and element x was complaining that I didn't have a separate app that I needed to use to get push notifications which one would think element x would do on its own but it does not.

Once I installed it apparently there's some extra shit that I've got to do to make that work too and it's just stuff like that that's just user hostile and not good.

I do like element and I love the idea of it but it's just not compatible with most humans, apparently even myself, though I'd thought I had it all ironed out.

Mumble and XMPP are still chugging along

[–] wintrparkgrl@beehaw.org 5 points 1 day ago

Matrix it is, only had discord still for it's widespread use
