Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

This is probably considered hate speech or something on Xitter since it's against their god.

I know Natalie gets a lot of shit but sharing Contrapoints videos has turned a number of my friends into J.K. bashing trans allies...which is nice.

Also, I know of one guy who was helped by her incel video.

[–] infinitesunrise@slrpnk.net 2 points 37 minutes ago

She repeatedly states in her videos that she's a liberal and then people get angry at her for being a fake leftist. I don't agree with a small segment of her opinions, but it's not as if she isn't honest with her audience. I wish literally any other liberal had her level of ideological clarity.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 7 points 5 hours ago (2 children)

She's not as left as I'd personally like, but outside twitter she's generally been exactly what I'd like centrists to be. I may not always agree with her ideas in videos, but they make me think and I can respect them.

Honestly I wish more of the left would look to her for an example of an effective propagandist. Her videos are entertaining and rather than being preachy she asks questions and tries to guide the audience through a path to the answer she found.

[–] pirc_lover@feddit.uk 3 points 1 hour ago

That and I like the fact she’s generally been open with when she’s changed her opinions or when she thought she’d been wrong about something.

I dislike on the internet when people have to be either perfect or discarded. I can disagree with some of what a public figure has said or done while still thinking they are — on the whole — worthy of admiration for what they have achieved.

I'm not sure she's a centrist as much as a progressive liberal 😅

Listen I'm already suspending disbelief a lot to hope the left actually try to convince people that we're right instead of sticking our heads up our asses because we know we are, let me pretend that her beliefs could be in the center /s

"Lidar is woke and self driving cars should just fucking crash into walls when people paint Wil-E-Coyote tunnel entrances on them."

-Elon bootlickers

[–] Zwiebel@feddit.org 3 points 6 hours ago

Lidar is one thing but ripping out the much cheaper front facing radar is criminal

[–] astropenguin5@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Hear me out, maybe both cameras and lidar?

[–] infinitesunrise@slrpnk.net 3 points 32 minutes ago

Neither. If I wanted my vehicle to drive itself I'd be on a tram.

Do you actually miss being in online arguments all the time, Natalie? If so, I think the internet may have broken your brain a little. The fact that I hardly ever end up in actual arguments here on Lemmy is part of the appeal of the platform. Even when there are disagreements, both sides tend to just walk away instead of pummel each other into the ground. But I also tend to curate myself to only communities that are well moderated, so maybe I'm just not seeing the asshats.

[–] driving_crooner@lemmy.eco.br 21 points 6 hours ago (2 children)

She did a video where she talked about the rush of having arguments online and reading toxic trans forums. So, I believe her when she said that she misses that.

[–] FinnFooted@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago

I'm overly opinionated. But, If i argue with people on the internet it's a proxy for arguing with people in real life. It scratches the itch and even wears me down a bit. Then I have more self control on picking battles with people I know in real life and dont want to hate me.

Is it a healthy comping meachniam to wear down my combative side using bigots and bots on the internet? Probably not. But it works.

[–] FireRetardant@lemmy.world 3 points 6 hours ago

Sometimes a take is so shitty its actually entertaining

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 5 points 5 hours ago

She's described it as more addictive than heroin. And while normally I brush statements like that, I do think it's a valuable analysis when said by a recovering heroin addict like her

[–] moosetwin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

I was under the impression that getting into arguments was the point of the internet

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 5 points 5 hours ago

No it isn’t. Delete ur account.

[–] otacon239@lemmy.world 20 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Well I just don’t agree with you. I think everything you said is stupid.

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)
