‘Tens of thousands’ seek refugee at Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza

As Israel restarts its military campaign, Mansour Shouman in southern Gaza says he has been “surrounded by tens of thousands” of people who have come to Nasser Hospital to seek refugee.

Shouman, who told Al Jazeera that he is currently sheltering in a tent beside the maternity ward, said, “over 10 people have been killed [and] brought in ambulances close by me”.

“There is a general feeling of anxiety between the civilians here, people do not know what’s going to happen next. The belief is that negotiations are still going. People are hopeful that a ceasefire will hold in the next few hours,” Shouman said.

He added that people are staying put wherever they are as it’s too dangerous to travel anywhere.

“Despite all challenges, Palestinians are steadfast on their land here, they don’t want any repeat of 1948 and 1967. We are not leaving our land to go anywhere, we will try to strive against what the occupation here is doing,” he said.

NATO barbed wire on Finland's eastern border

Finland's foreign policy establishment, the coalition-led bourgeois government and Parliament are continuing where they left off in the previous term. Russia must be isolated at all costs.

The sanctions policy dictated by the US and the EU has driven Finland's economy into a deepening recession. Bilateral trade with Russia, which used to flourish, is dwindling to zero. Trade disruption and recession are now fuelling unemployment and poverty.

The policy of sanctions, slavishly pursued by the Finnish political leadership, has pushed up the price of electricity, fuel, food and housing. This is not an estimate, but a fact.

In addition to the economic hardship, the closure and blockade of the eastern border has now been added to the burden borne by Finns. Only Russia and the Russians are blamed for it. The situation is ominously reminiscent of the anti-democratic era of the 1930s. The Civil Guard(anti-communist militia, basically the Whites from the civil war) practised warfare and schoolchildren practised weaponry. Communists, socialists and peacemakers were isolated in prisons and detention facilities. Russophobia was the number one concern of the state leadership and bourgeois newspapers.

During the wars, Finland was a brother-in-arms of Nazi Germany. Now that place has been taken by NATO. Reconnaissance planes and drones from the member countries of the military alliance fly along the eastern border. Helicopters buzz around the border, watching to see if some hapless Afghan is "sneaking" into Finland.

On top of all the fuss, Finland's eastern border is guarded by border guards from a foreign power. NATO barbed wire has been erected along the border, which is said to be more effective than domestic wire. The only reason for this is to prevent refugees from countries destroyed by the wars of aggression waged by the USA and NATO countries from entering Finland.

It is estimated that 25 000 asylum seekers will arrive in Finland this year. Most of them will come via the southern and western borders. Some will even be picked up by planes and buses.

Why is it that only the eastern border is being completely closed, but not the other borders? Why can an Afghan refugee not apply for asylum at the eastern border, but can at the western border? Is this a new NATO policy?

Do you think that your quality of life and monetary situation has gotten notably worse over the past few years? Financial Times: Should we believe Americans when they say the economy is bad?

Something weird is happening in America. GDP growth for Q3 was just revised up from an already scorching 4.9 per cent to 5.2 per cent, more Americans have jobs than at any time in history, but the public is up in arms about economic conditions, with consumer confidence dropping to a six-month low. There really is no pleasing some people.

With headline indicators in such rude health, we would expect the number of Americans who think they’re better off than this time last year to outnumber those who say they’re worse off by about 25 percentage points. Instead, the reportedly worse-offs outnumber the better-offs by ten points in the latest University of Michigan’s index of Current Economic Conditions.

I know what you’re thinking: inflation explains all of this. People really hate rising prices, and are reminded of them every time they buy something. Inflation’s salience drowns out other more distant or intangible gains. It’s certainly a good theory, but countries all around the world have faced steep inflation. Many steeper than the US. Presumably their consumers are also much more pessimistic than we would expect?

Well, no actually. Extending an original analysis by X user Quantian1, I have calculated expected consumer sentiment for a set of countries based on their underlying economic indicators, and compared it to actual sentiment. Relative to the eve of the pandemic, US consumers now appear gloomier than the French, the Germans and even the British. The Europeans all feel about as confident as one might expect based on how their economies are performing. Disproportionate doom seems to be a new American affliction.

So what’s going on? Last weekend FocalData ran a poll for me, asking a representative sample of 2,000 US adults whether they thought economic circumstances had improved or deteriorated over recent years. The results were startling: Americans are consistently wrong in the negative direction on almost every measure we polled. By huge margins, they believe inflation is still rising (it’s falling), that it has outstripped wage growth (wages have outpaced prices), and that they have become less wealthy (they’ve become much wealthier).

Attempts to justify this sense of gloom often emphasise the challenges faced by less prosperous groups, but this also goes counter to the evidence. One explanation I heard is that the despondency comes from young people struggling with runaway rents. But wages have risen faster for them than the old, outpacing rents. Plus young consumers are the most positive, per the Michigan survey.

Similarly, wages have risen faster for those on the lowest incomes, reversing more than a third of the increase in wage inequality over the past four decades. Wealth has risen for the least and most wealthy alike.

The most striking response from our survey concerned the sense of longer-term progress. Large majorities of Americans think the median income today pays for a worse lifestyle than 30 years ago (demonstrably false), and that poverty is higher than it was a generation ago (it has plummeted). One particularly revealing statistic is that Americans’ assessment of their own financial situation has barely budged over the past five years, but their rating of the national economy has worsened steeply. It seems they have decided that the vibes are bad, so things must be going badly for most other people, even if not for themselves.

It seems US consumer sentiment is becoming the latest victim of expressive responding, where people give incorrect answers to questions to signal wider tribal political or social affiliations. My advice: if you want to know what Americans really think of economic conditions, look at their spending patterns. Unlike cautious Europeans, US consumers are back on the pre-pandemic trendline and buying more stuff than ever.

More than 100 people killed in Gaza, Hamas claims

The death toll since the resumption of fighting has increased again – now standing at 109, Reuters quotes the territory’s Hamas-run health ministry as saying.

It comes as the World Health Organization (WHO) warns Gaza’s health system was on its knees even before the ceasefire ended, with hospitals resembling a “horror movie”.

WHO officials inside Gaza have said the healthcare situation there was already “catastrophic”. Richard Peeperkorn, its representative there, has told reporters: “We are extremely concerned about the resumption of violence.” Already, he said, “the health system in Gaza has been crippled by the ongoing hostilities. It cannot afford to lose more hospitals”.

UN reports ‘dramatic increase’ in number of Palestinians detained

Since October 7, more than 3,000 Palestinians have been arrested in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, with 160 in the past six days – often without direct evidence of an offence, the UN Human Rights Office says. Six Palestinian men have died in Israeli custody during this period, a decades-long high. The surge in arrests, reports of ill-treatment, and failure to adhere to due process raise serious concerns about Israel’s compliance with international law, it said.

Breaking: Israel-Hamas truce agreement appears to have expired with no immediate sign of extension

The truce between Israel and Hamas appeared to have expired Friday with no immediate sign of an agreement being reached to further extend the hostage deal to an eighth day.

It is not yet clear whether this means that fighting will resume in the Gaza Strip, which suffered extensive damage and loss of life during seven weeks of Israeli bombardment.

An hour before Friday’s deadline was set to expire Israel’s aerial defense system intercepted one rocket launched from the Gaza Strip, the Israeli military said. There was no indication of who launched the single rocket.

The truce, which started last Friday, was expected to expire at 7 a.m. local time (12 a.m. ET). An agreement to extend to a seventh day came down to the wire on Thursday.

Some context: Egyptian and Qatari negotiators had been pushing to extend the pause in fighting in Gaza for an extra two days to facilitate the release of further hostages and Palestinian prisoners, and to allow more aid into the strip, according to Egypt's State Information Service.

Israeli officials have repeatedly stated that a condition of any extension to the pause in fighting is that Hamas must release 10 Israeli women and children held hostage per day.

Under the terms of the deal, Israel freed three Palestinians for every Israeli hostage released.

As the truce expiration loomed both Israel and Hamas have indicated they’re prepared for fighting to resume.

“We should be prepared for a quick transition into full scale fighting at any point, today, tomorrow, at any moment. As soon as we maximize the move to return hostages we will resume fierce fighting across the whole Gaza Strip,” Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said Thursday.

Hamas’ military wing on Thursday asked its forces to maintain a high-combat readiness posture.

In the seven-day pause in fighting, 80 Israelis — primarily women and children and some of whom are dual citizens — and another 24 foreign nationals have been released. Another Israeli dual citizen was also freed outside of the agreed-upon deal.

As of Thursday, 240 Palestinians had been freed from Israeli prisons — mainly women and minors.
