This isn't a recommendation, but you reminded me of something. I've been meaning for a while now to watch Ken Burns presents: The West. But on a recent flight I was on, I saw someone watching what looked like some kind of documentary with Kevin Costner about the old west (which I've just looked up and see is called Kevin Costner's The West). But the problem with it is it is rife with AI slop. So every other time I looked over at what this other person was watching on his screen, I just saw slop like fake art that was supposed to pass as real art, or fake reenactments that looked like how all shitty ai videos do.
Kevin... are you ok with this in a documentary that bears your name? Buddy, you ok? It looked so shitty.
If audio only format is ok check out Dan Carlin's Hardcore History.
IDK if it's my "favorite," so this might be a bad recommendation, but you might be interested in the documentary Historical Nihilism and the fall of the USSR. It's a Chinese documentary made in 2013 that all CPC party members were required to watch.
While not necessarily documentaries, and, as much as I am loathe to recommend YouTube content creators, I really like
- Ancient Americas
- History with Cy
- History Time
- Religion for Breakfast
- Let’s Talk Religion
- Esoterica
- Historia Civilis
Mostly because I enjoy falling asleep to the sound of men’s voices talking about long ago and not-so-long-ago times. There are others, of course, but these are my favorites.
I love all of those great recs
Allow me to add Al Muqaddimah
Hell yes this looks right up my alley
He is also a marxist btw which is a huge W
Hell yes. I watched a couple last night and they’re excellent. Seems like he’s tight with the Let’s Talk Religion guy as well, so that’s cool. Thanks for the recommendation!
Have you checked out tribunate? Their stuff is always good, short, and they're definitely some flavor of (actually trained) materialist historians.
I've just watched a few videos from them after seeing this comment, they're great! and in one of them (the video on the state of emergency) he even cites Parenti at the end. Thanks for commenting about their channel!
Glad! They really deserve to have more eyes on their work. It's very high quality stuff.
yeah, was gonna mention them too. it's pretty much the only youtube rome channel that goes beyond what the ancient extremely reactionary aristocrats had to say about roman history, and tries to actually present the perspective of the lower roman orders.
No, but I’m gonna check ‘em out. Always on the lookout for this type of stuff
The Hour of the Furnaces (1968) - part1 - part 2
A documentary form Argentina made in during the dictatorship in the 60's. Using pretty avant gard techniques, it's kind of entrancing and powerful. It goes over the history of colonialism in South America generally, and Argentina specifically. It was technically illegal in Argentina when it was made, and public showing and attendence was an act of defiance to the dictatorship.
F.T.A. (1972) - "A documentary about a political troupe headed by actors Jane Fonda and Donald Sutherland which traveled to towns near military bases in the US in the early 1970s. The group put on shows called “F.T.A.”, which stood for “Fuck the Army”, and was aimed at convincing soldiers to voice their opposition to the Vietnam War, which was raging at the time. Various singers, actors and other entertainers performed antiwar songs and skits during the show."
Fidel (1971) - This follows Fidel Castro post-revolution, touring the Cuba and inspecting conditions on the ground and doing his thing. Basically going around spitting theory and facts and being charismatic.

Time Travellers Guide to Australia is free on YouTube and covers large swaths of history of a very fucking interesting continent.
Did you know that the redness is because of the oceans rusting? Wild shit
