Why are you collecting this info anyway? It's obvious you'll be a target of a warrant or hack or some sort.

[–] bokherif@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago

Collecting that data is the point for most of these websites

I think it's just a natural consequence of organizing. You have to know who you are and what you're doing.

Probably a good idea to start using paper files though

Hmmmm, if only we could have seen this coming... People predicted this when ICEBlock came to be and it was just a matter of time until it would happen for one of these platforms. You gotta run small local groups for this type of stuff. Decentralizing is the name of the game.

I remember someone reviewed ICEBlock’s code and reported some issues and the dev was so defensive and rudely dismissed it. I think it was eventually determined that it was a minor issue, but the main takeaway from that is just because it’s for a good cause, it doesn’t mean you should fully trust the developer. They’re still human at the end of the day.

Even if the dev is a literal saint, the feds can still just break into his house and take over his servers and ssh keys to modify the software or push a malicious update.

Or perhaps develop the Honeypot app in the first place.

[–] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 37 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Why was that type of user info stored in the first place?

EDIT: Derp. I need fresh glasses. I read "what" instead of "why".

It's listed very early on in the article.

The exposed information reportedly includes full names, user credentials, phone numbers and precise location data for more than 100,000 registered users. One post indicated that the breach involved detailed GPS coordinates, potentially identifying activists' residences or frequent locations.

Oh, "why". Fuck I'm blind. I read "what". My bad.

[–] PlutoniumAcid@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago

No worries, mate. We all have days like that.

Stop trying to avoid the lists. We should be trying to put so many names on these lists that they become equivalent to a census. Hiding doesn't work so stand up and fight in the light or accept that you'll die in the shadows.

[–] IronBird@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago

hiding does work, but only if you do so gradually and thoroughly (and actually plan on doing something worth hiding, it's a hassle being thorough tbh)

Yeah, seriously, federated cell structure is the way to go here

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress does an excellent job of describing federated hierarchical cell structures

[–] CompactFlax@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 2 months ago

And another group of people learn what “toxic data” is!

Reject "apps"

Retvrn to using a browser to visit an offshore website that doesn't store logs

You can just be known for speaking out. If you don’t want to, don’t sign up for shit.

“Sent to law enforcement”. ? Yeah, so? They gonna bring charges? For what? No. They do not give a shit. Unless you end up getting charged for bad actions on someone who is white and associated with political power. Then they might try to bring it in as evidence, but any competent defense would get that thrown out anyway. Settle down Che Guevara.

Still, a good lesson for what the top commenter pointed out. Stay away from crap apps and sites like facepals and the like.

Or you might just disappear without any due process.
