Just finished Adventure Time for the first time. Finn's loss of his arm trying to connect with his selfish father and its replacement with a demon-laden version of himself followed by cold metal is a rich examination of the dehumanizing reduction of man to utility expanded upon by almost every other character (but particularly his disembodied mother). That said, Jake was totally his cure for male loneliness.

So either a cool robot arm or a cool magic dog

Great, now you are ready to watch Distant Lands and then Fionna and Cake!

For some men, the loneliness runs deep. Get two just to be safe.

[–] toynbee@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Is that a modern version of Jax?

[–] CaptDust@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 month ago (5 children)

It's MK11 art, modern yes but still 7 years ago (oh god)

[–] toynbee@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Well ... Good to know. Thank you for the answer.

Luke had a pretty decent support system, despite some serious alienation issues to work through, so a hand and part of the forearm were sufficient.

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 27 points 1 month ago

Don't forget that one.

We all remember Metroid being a great example.

[–] RichardDegenne@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

So it's the cure to female loneliness as well?

[–] Sculptor9157@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 month ago

Assuredly. But also a metal-armed female companion cures male and Metroid loneliness, too.

Or if you're Alphonse Elric you just get metal... everything.

[–] devolution@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Ummm.... Then what's his excuse?

[–] scintilla@piefed.zip 4 points 1 month ago

Well I mean you can't be lonely when your wife is always with you.

Feels like a ridiculous additional if you've played the game

A colleague has a badass metal arm and I can confirm that it's a great conversation starter.

On the flipside, though, I can only imagine that it wasn't easy to find a partner...

I decided 35 years ago that if I lost my arm that I was gonna get a metal one, maybe with a built in ratchet set.
