By the way out here in the Pacific Northwest we have record low snowpack. So I hope the rest of the country is ready to breathe our smoke this summer.

It's 50-60% in Colorado. The warmest winter in 40 years, the warmest December since 1933, the latest recorded first snow. It's been so pleasant that I've been bike commuting with a light jacket at most. Since it's trailing our wettest year in over a century, all that biomass is probably going to make those fires hellish. I'm very tempted to move out of the state instead of repeating our apocalyptic 2020 fire season.

Fellow Ryan Hall enjoyer! Stay safe comrade

Luckily the entire storm is missing me. It's cold but we barely got scratched by snow. It seems like it's going to be catastrophic for a lot of people.

I'm expecting to lose power overnight. It's gonna be plum wild here through Monday.

[–] happybadger@hexbear.net 8 points 2 months ago

Hopefully it doesn't get too bad for you!

Stay safe kitti. One bit of good news up here in the northeast it's just going to be snow, probably around like 8 or 9 inches then stop around sunday night so I'll be able to shovel out.

so cool to know that people will def die in texas because of their ultra capitalist power grid. cause who really needs climate control? obviously only weak people who should die anyways.

The reliability operator has put in place a bunch of cold weather measures to prevent a repeat of the last time this happened. Those preparedness plans are about to be seriously tested. I hope the grid holds up and people stay safe.

I got some people in a high probability of damaging ice zone who I asked after 2nd hand and heard back that they'd "try to be careful" what-the-hell . I hope that their urgency was lost in translation lol, rip.

Ice is one of those things I don't even think of as a natural disaster because it's so rare and usually overshadowed by a blizzard. 2.5cm/1in of ice on a tree is like 3500kg of extra weight. My urban forest would become very lethal overnight if every tree had the equivalent of a Ford F-350 Super Duty parked on top of it during its weakest part of the year.

I've been through a devastating ice storm like that. We lost power early on, spent the night huddled in front of the fireplace listening to trees strain, groan, and finally buckle under the weight. The town was completely silent except for the terrible cracking of limbs and the occasional boooom of a transformer meeting its fate. Before long we didn't hear any more transformers, it was just the splitting of wood against the quiet

Are y'all actually looking at a full inch of ice? Because that's an insane amount. Just five millimeters is nothing to fuck with.

That's what the projection has been, in a part of the country that usually has such mild winters that it barely reaches 0C at all.

[–] Assian_Candor@hexbear.net 2 points 2 months ago

I'm forecast to get 17 inches of snow 😂
