I'm not sure we needed John Cleese's acknowledgment, but yes it's a good joke

That's rich coming from John Cleese, he was on the side of fucking over the peaceful state of international relatioships when it came to brexit, supporting the pricks that he's now criticizing.

He should just fuck off to the cayman islands and shut up. He cashed in all his Monty Python/Fawlty Towers goodwill when he became Basil

[–] bonenode@piefed.social 41 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I feel thats two different things though. You can be an asshole about European union but still dislike Trumps antics.

[–] Evkob@lemmy.ca 27 points 1 day ago

"Deep down, I want to be a Cambodian police woman. Is that allowed, or am I being unrealistic?"

John Cleese on trans people

(He's definitely an asshole about more than the EU)

[–] SanctimoniousApe@lemmings.world 37 points 1 day ago (17 children)

Still an asshole in the end. Assholes disliking another asshole doesn't make them less of an asshole.

He spent most of his adult life dodging taxes -- no surprise that he would be pro-brexit.

[–] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 22 points 1 day ago (1 children)

There's a big difference between supporting fascists and dictators, and supporting the UK shooting it's own dick off.

But yeah, people shouldn't support either.

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago

well, supporting one leads to strengthening the other. a fuckload of brexit propaganda money came from russia, which should make it suspect.

[–] voracitude@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Dammit. I thought he was funny, turns out he's a xenophobic fuckhead.

I actually already couldn't enjoy Fawlty Towers anymore, the racism is obvious to me now that I'm an adult. It's distasteful. I guess for John, it wasn't just "the times" the show was made in. Ah well, plenty of not-fuckheads whose work can be enjoyed.

[–] Hawke@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago (1 children)

He’s both: funny and a xenophobic fuckhead.

Although… I’m not so sure that he’s still funny these days. It would seem not.

[–] voracitude@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

Yeah, I agree. I guess I should have said I used to think he was funny. It's been a long damn time since he said anything that made me laugh.

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You're allowed to enjoy something for what it is while recognizing it's problematic.

Or follow gay humour where you find a bunch of fag jokes but you're laughing at the bumbling fool/homophobic person.

[–] voracitude@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

But that's what I'm saying - I don't think those kind of jokes are funny anymore. When I was younger I thought it was all in good fun, that nobody really meant it and that's why it was funny, but then I saw the world and realised it's very much not. The humour was drained away by the hatred.

Don't get to serious about membership. Trump just wants you to pay the membership fee.

[–] GreenShimada@lemmy.world 33 points 1 day ago

Literally how Mar-a-Lago works. He wants people to pay him to make a rich boys' club for heads of state because all the other ones aren't money to him based. They're just about how much money does the country have, like the G8.

I think it’s that AND I suspect they allow corporations to join and that will legitimize corporations being as powerful as countries which allows dark enlightenment folks to have their corpo nation states

It's always a grift.

The world is going to end in nuclear hell fire, isn't it?

[–] JackBinimbul@lemmy.blahaj.zone 25 points 1 day ago (1 children)

More likely to be economic collapse at this point.

[–] Thedogdrinkscoffee@lemmy.ca 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Ecological collapse, triggering economic collapse, triggering open conflict, triggering nuclear fires.

I should place a bet on a prediction market. ;)

[–] axexrx@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Why bother. The money on that bet wont be worth anything if it comes true.

[–] gmtom@lemmy.world 2 points 21 hours ago

That was a certainty from the minute they were proven viable.

Trump is doing the war crimes too, hopefully he's on that list soon.

[–] Zephorah@discuss.online 12 points 1 day ago

This one follows SciFi themes in which the most militant, oppressive, and intractable force is often called the peacekeepers.

[–] metallic_z3r0@infosec.pub 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Something's uncanny about Putin here, is this a body double, AI, a much older photo, or has he had some work done recently?

[–] pipes@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 day ago

Looks like the photo is about 12 years old, I put the link on TinEye and one of the earliest appearances is this April 2014 article:
