Moderator Guidelines
Moderator Guidelines
- Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
- Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
- When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
- Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
- Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
- Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
- Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
- Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
- Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
- Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
- Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
- Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
- First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
- Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
- No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
- Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
- Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.
that's why you always put a stair there so the water can't flow anywhere
Hand painted pictures of videogame scenes are actually legitimately fascinating to me. Like, from an art criticism perspective I think they're really cool. A team of developers and paid artists created a virtual world and then a player enjoyed frolicking on their finished canvas, as that first layer of artists intended. The player had an original experience that was impactful enough for them to interpret that experience - Which didn't actually happen in the physical world - For yet another audience, in a distinctly physical medium, in a style that inevitably blends the representational visuals of the game with the player-cum-artist's own stylistic quirks. For a game like minecraft, the output looks like it could have come from the cubist era. Picasso or Dali would have probably been fascinated to see this. Magritte would be shocked. Ce n'est pas un portail. In a way, a painted representation of a video game makes the video game actually feel more real. I know that place. I've been there.
If you experience that world often enough, it is real in a way.
The representation of the place is virtual but the memories made in it are real.
If reality itself could be a simulation and we don't know any different, would knowing it's a simulation change the realness and validity of our experiences within?
Fascinating topic, really. It's cool how art can make you wonder.
player-cum-artist
😏😏😂 heheheh (I have to sense of humor of an 8th grader)
I know of aether mod but I don't understand the mechanic here. Or is it just building the portal and not having the mod installed?
When the aether mod was new, modding was not very mainstream for Minecraft yet. So many many many people have the shared childhood experience of seeing videos of the aether mod and not even knowing it was a mod. We all thought it was a hidden feature and tried making the portal which of course never worked.
lol that gives me luigi in mario 64 vibes, but if someone went back in time with a romhack to 'prove' it
Very similar vibes, just a different generation of kids. I would put money on their being another one of these things happening right now that we will find out about in about 10 years :P
I don't play enough Minecraft to get this.
Sky block challenge has you start on an island with just a tree and some simple items and you have to progress in a specific order. This player made obsidian before having anything to break it with when trying to make infinite cobblestone
I don't know too much about Minecraft and especially not Sky Block. But isn't the implication also that they wasted their Lava by turning it into an Obsidian instead of using water+lava to create a cobble stone generator, thus softlocking their progress entirely?
You got it
All versions of skyblock I've played have had a way to get lava from nothing but the starting tree, so it's not a softlock just potentially tedious to get back to that point.
Vanilla skyblock with nothing but a chest is a thing, fear the people who do it.
That sounds better than starting with the tree and no chest, meaning you have to do stuff like collect rainwater in a cauldron you made by killing a lot of zombies.
I fear to speak of the people who have done "the true skyblock challenge"
What's that? o_o
It's only one singular block.
One block, no mods.
what?
ALL VERSIONS OF SKYBLOCK I’VE PLAYED HAVE HAD A WAY TO GET LAVA FROM NOTHING BUT THE STARTING TREE, SO IT’S NOT A SOFTLOCK JUST POTENTIALLY TEDIOUS TO GET BACK TO THAT POINT.
I'm sorry I'm hard of seeing can you speak bigger?

Oh funny. I've actually come across a streamer on Youtube doing this challenge. Didn't realize it was a common thing.
Skyblock is over 10 years old at this point I'd guess
Important note in addition to the other comments: the player is now soft-locked
still doable but I'd rather just start over
