  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

Trump has said he will not be imposing tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on 1 February.

In a post on Truth Social he said, based upon a "very productive meeting" with the Secretary General of Nato Mark Rutte they "have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland".

He said: "This solution, if consummated, will be a great one for the United States of America, and all Nato Nations.

"Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the Tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st. Additional discussions are being held concerning The Golden Dome as it pertains to Greenland.

"Further information will be made available as discussions progress. Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and various others, as needed, will be responsible for the negotiations β€” They will report directly to me. Thank you for your attention to this matter!"

I suppose he's gonna make it his January tradition for the rest of his presidency, to demand Greenland every January which may be a good thing, because it will reminds us every january that America is no longer our allies and that we should continue to de-americanize ourselves. And for every attempt he makes, it'll just strengthen our relationship with Greenland and our true allies in the rest of Europe. Keep going, Trump. Keep shitting on my country and make claims about how badly we have treated Greenland and how terrible allies we were to the US. Keep going. We are the ones laughing at you in the end.

And btw, if the Democrats chooses Newsom as their candidate for the next election and not AOC, then it truly proves that Europe should not consider America an ally anymore. Fuck Newsom too.

The only reason for keeping war alive is to sell shit. Capitalism as a system coupled with human greed is a lose-lose and yet the beat goes on...

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 1 points 18 hours ago

I read the opinions of several "experts," both American and European, who suggested that they give Greenland to Trump, just to "preserve the peace."

And it turns out it was all a bluff. Those little weasels would have bent to his will, and that's how we got here. If Trump's parents had kicked his ass as a child, every time he threw one of his screaming tantrums, we wouldn't be here now. But now that we are here, we are not obligated to continue his parents' negligence.

He needs to be told NO, loud and clear, and he needs to feel the consequences of his many, many crimes. Stop coddling this treasonous pedophile, and start treating him like the psychopathic monster that he is.

TACO

It was all a bluff, and they called him on it.

[–] DougHolland@lemmy.world 1 points 19 hours ago

It's not over.

Don’t fall for it, EU. Don’t restart the trade agreement talks.

This dumb asshole will absolutely still do all the shitty things he wants to get Greenland.

I think this episode has been a big wake up call for European leaders and I assume they'll be pretty wary of Trump for quite a while. Ursula von der Leyen said this in Davos yesterday:

...geopolitical shocks can – and must – serve as an opportunity for Europe. And in my view, the seismic change we are going through today is an opportunity, in fact, a necessity to build a new form of European independence

After Epstein files Donnie, it is refreshing to read a speech from someone who went to school.

[–] CosmoNova@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

The EU will absolutely restart trade agreement talks and even give the Americans a cherry on top because lil old Donnie was a good boy. You can bet on that.

Say it with me: TACO (Trump Always Chickens Out)

[–] redditmademedoit@piefed.zip 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yeah, he wouldn't dare join a direct war against Iran, invade Venezuela or impose massive (even if not as big as he said) tariffs on the world...

DOJ is in contempt of congress, failing to meet last month's deadline to release the files, some lawmakers are pushing for individuals responsible to be charged fines daily.

Some of them are also suing the DOJ, moving on from not only contempt of congress but in the future also contempt of court. Recently a Judge Paul A. Engelmayer declared that lawmakers have the right to sue to appoint a special counsel to ensure the release but that the suit cannot be appended to Maxwell's criminal case, this decision could be appealed it only just happened.

They're also caught up in civil suit by news organizations, including Radar Online, which also sued the government in 2017 for failing to release the files before the courts sealed them again.

The only items that are allowed to be redacted are information about Epstein's victims and any current ongoing criminal investigation materials, meaning there will likely be some criminal charges over the redactions eventually but since Ro Khanna's attempt to tie it into the Maxwell case failed there will be little consequence for the delayed release at this time.

Epstein Files

I don't understand what's going on. They are public already, in various forms (though not from an "official" source - but that's probably better anyway), but no echo so far.

The press plainly ignores them?

[–] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 2 points 1 day ago

Less than a rounding error percentage of the files have been released by the DOJ to congress.

When Scott Bessent said for Europe to calm down and think through selling off American assets, that’s when you know you’ve found their weakness

We grabbed them by the pussy!

When Scott Bessent said for Europe to calm dow

For sure, that was a very remarkable and for me unexpected statement. Good that he picked up the mood.(#typo)

...for now...

He'll find someone and something else to make him threat with tariffs in 5..4..3..2..

[–] tomkatt@lemmy.world 17 points 2 days ago (3 children)

So… who profited this time?

[–] tomiant@piefed.social 5 points 2 days ago

Same muppet with the same fascist handler fists up his ass as every time.

[–] bstix@feddit.dk 2 points 2 days ago

Trump.

He left the mess for someone else to clean up and now it's finally time for the usual golfing grifting.

Remember his last term? He "worked" a few months making wild statements and setting up ICE. Then he went golfing for 3.5 years.

He's getting old. It took him almost a year to get to that point this time.

[–] DarkCloud@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

If he creats a conflict by attacking Greenland China would go for Taiwan soon after.

[–] Windex007@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Russia would hit the Baltics. Not necessarily a full commitment, just a little land grab. Just to prove to the world that the US will not defend NATO countries.

[–] tomiant@piefed.social 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

They so much as sneeze wrong at the Baltics or any European nation, I am arming myself with home made bombs and molotovs and going full one man terrorist cell Leroy Mnjkenins on their asses, I don't even give a shit what Europe does.

[–] redditmademedoit@piefed.zip 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

There's no way Russia could just nibble a little on an EU/Nato country with a full response from Europe, regardless of whether the US backs it up. Whether Europe is in good shape to deal with that is a different story, but I'd say there's little room to do anything "small" under their own flag.

[–] Kornblumenratte@feddit.org 2 points 2 days ago

There is. If they succeed to install an AfD government in Germany and a PiS one in Poland, they would very likely be able to "protect" russian speakers in the Baltics. And since the US government and the tech oligarchy joined russia in the fight for breaking up the EU this scenario is not unrealistic.

[–] reluctant_squidd@lemmy.ca 8 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Whatever retaliation they were planning should be implemented anyways. As long as his threats go unchecked, he will just keep making them.

[–] Kornblumenratte@feddit.org 3 points 2 days ago

The problem is that every retaliation possible would harm the EU as well. Nobody harms themselves unless there is a very strong incentive to do so.

Shut up Cartman, you stupid fat bitch

I guess we're in the "saving face" phase.

[–] Kornblumenratte@feddit.org 3 points 2 days ago

the entire Arctic Region.

So - Canada, Norway and Sibiria will be annexed, too?

[–] Quittenbrot@feddit.org 2 points 2 days ago

I love how he actually calls that thing 'Golden Dome', thinking it sounds cool, while I think it sounds like something created by someone who's really into Golden Showers - which I think would fit Trump perfectly.

[–] tomiant@piefed.social 6 points 2 days ago

Stock market goes boing boing boing boing boing.
