Apparently it’s “virtue signaling” and “language policing” to not want to use language that actively oppresses people. Very cool.

We are so far away from any meaningful change it hurts.

My favorite:

Oh, I mistook people being anti-ICE for being anti-fascist… turns out they’re only anti-ICE

I guess being anti-ICE and being a Good Person are mutually exclusive of one another. My bad, y’all.

Libs absolutely love any excuse to "be able" to say slurs.

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 31 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I was playing Helldivers 2 not that long ago and someone on my team referred to an Automaton as a "Wireback" and how it "should go back to its own planet"

I emptied all six rounds from my revolver into him, called him a pathetic racist in chat and then kicked him from the game

I took a break for a while because you couldn't go more than a mission or two without someone saying "Clanker" with the same vitriol as someone saying the actual N-word

[–] Riffraffintheroom@hexbear.net 20 points 3 months ago (3 children)

We say chud and hog with vitriol too though? I don’t think saying things meanly is the problem.

First I'll paste a comment I left about this recently:

Yes, but the people who are using it that way are doing it as a cover so they can just cosplay lynching a black person. I'm not saying you are doing that at all, but that is the crowed you end up associating with as a result of using it. There's a reason it sounds like the N-word with a hard R. I've seen enough shit on the internet surrounding the term to know that they are just black-coding all the "robots" in all these conversations/videos. Taylor Lorenz, for as much of a liberal she can be at times, has good coverage of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBtbkOfUlIo. Another term that had been floating around was "wireback" which is just replacing "wet" with "wire" in the traditional slur against Mexicans.

Second, Chud and Hog do not root themselves in an actual slur in the same way that "clanker" and "wireback" do, which I always thought was pretty obvious.

[–] Riffraffintheroom@hexbear.net 10 points 3 months ago

Wireback I get, but “clanker” comes from a Star Wars cartoon and is closer to “clunker” which is old timey slang for a faulty machine. The only thing it has in common with the N word is an -er suffix, which is ubiquitous.

Clanker is just an excuse to get away with saying something close enough to the N-word for these people

It's already gross enough when they say shit like that and then titter away like a school kid who got away with saying dookie

It's worse when you can tell they're using it as an actual slur

TBH they give the whole game away when they say "Wireback". "Clanker" had the excuse of being from Star Wars, there's no way to get to "Wireback" without deriving directly from an actual racial slur and no reason to do so other than to tear the mask off for all your fellow chuds while keeping only barely a small layer of "plausible" deniability for the civility lib audience.

For real

And it's so fucking exhausting being like "Hey, i'm Hispanic, please don't talk like that, it's really messed up" only to get a barrage of "Chill out man, we're only pretending"

And it's like, out of everything you could use your imagination to do, you chose to be a racist?

A person can change their behavior and beliefs and stop being a chud or hog. Using a word as a slur that refers to an unchangeable part of a person or entity is the problem.

[–] doleo@lemmy.one 41 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I swear, every time someone demonstrates virtue, another accuses them of signalling.

It's like it's impossible to imagine someone doing something good. The only possible reason somebody might do it is if another person perceives them positively from doing so.

This transactional yanqui culture runs so deep.

[–] peeonyou@hexbear.net 8 points 3 months ago

that's because everything is a performance in the US due to entertainment based culture

A lib seeing a black ICE agent internally debating if its socially acceptable to call them the gamer word biggus-dickus

[–] SoyViking@hexbear.net 32 points 3 months ago

Fascists: Summarily executes their political opponents in the streets.

Liberals: The situation is dire! We might even have to relax some of our tone policing! (PS: Can I say the slurs now?)

restoring democracy

shoulder-grab If your fucking Yankee empire of corpses doesn't have "democracy" now then it never had it. You are no different from the fascists you claim to oppose.

I'm hard pressed to think of a country where language-policing was an effective tool in restoring democracy.

And I'm hard pressed to think of a time when a comment on Redd*t was an effective tool in restoring democracy, yet you're commenting anyway.

This is such a reductionist take. No, making rules against oppressive language isn't going to "restore democracy". Did anyone claim that it was ever going to? This betrays the lack of political development of the commenter.

I know this is nitpicking but I really hate this haughty Redd*tor posturing. They could have just said "This won't fix the problem" but instead it has to be wrapped up in all this smug wording - "Well, according to my extensive study of history it appears to me that in no case which I'm able to identify would banning me from saying the N-word would have ever advanced the interests of democracy 😏"

If banning those words doesn't matter for restoring your precious bourgeois, settler-colonial democracy then it doesn't matter if you don't use those words either.

You're not wrong but I've seen pushback in all working class movements globally when trying to do stuff like this.

The working class cares primarily about their immediate personal circumstances, and in many cases they see any other cause as a threat to focusing on the cause that they care about.

I do not think it's a coincidence that lgbt rights improve in developed countries where working class conditions improve to a degree that they see more issues outside their own direct material circumstances as worth pursuing. While in developing countries things like addressing the immediate need of food and housing and oppression are the forefront of people's minds and if you try and push lgbt issues on them (among other things) they see it as getting in the way of more important stuff.

The reaction these people are having seems somewhat similar. They are scared about their own immediate potential to be shot in the face by ICE, and that's literally all they care about. Everything else is viewed as something getting in the way of that one singular issue they care about.

[–] Parzivus@hexbear.net 12 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Giving stuff like small and weak as examples of "good" insults is counterproductive if you're gonna make posts like this

A liberals understanding The Paradox of Tolerance is that we should have the moral right to be cruel little shits to the political out-group because they do it too.

It proves they never really cared about actually tolerating minorities and correcting their viewpoints. It's something they shouldn't do but now that they can they'll relish it like a white supremacist reading Huck Finn aloud in a black church.

Oh wow, what a good, thoughtful post on the topic very-smart maybe a pinned message from the moderators

...oh, oh no ohnoes

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 8 points 3 months ago

I think their idea of "good" examples of insults shows how they have internalised the worldview of the fascists as one where the strong must destroy the weak, they just consider themselves to be the strong party and ICE to be the weak ones.

[–] StarkWolf@hexbear.net 8 points 3 months ago

OP: "Using these words against ICE agents might unintentionally hurt innocent people reading this so be more careful with your words."

Every single commenter: "I DON'T CARE ABOUT THE FEELINGS OF ICE AGENTS!!"
