Minneapolis Public Schools has canceled classes and activities following the fatal shooting of a woman by an immigration officer and ensuing protests.

The school district, which has an enrolment of about 29,000 students, said in a statement on Wednesday that there will be no school, sports and activities on Thursday and Friday “due to safety concerns related to today’s incidents around the city.”

The 37-year-old woman, identified as Renee Nicole Good, was fatally shot in a residential neighbourhood south of downtown Minneapolis during the Trump administration’s latest immigration crackdown in a major city.

Her killing after 9:30 a.m. was recorded on video by witnesses.

The are closed because ice raided a highschool and assaulted staff and students the same day as the shooting.

Of course, because woke just means understanding reality not fantasy.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

The elites need this country to up its rate of functional illiteracy, and schooling people is not going to help with that.

[–] halcyoncmdr@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (2 children)

That's exactly why they've been defunding schools for decades and more recently demonizing higher education as "woke", which they have no actual definition for. Woke is whatever they don't want, they never have a definition for it.

[–] shane@feddit.nl 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Defunding? Not defending, right?

[–] halcyoncmdr@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

Fucking autocorrect. Yeah.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

recently demonizing higher education as “woke”

Barring the use of the term "woke", the demonizing is not all that new. They've definitely been telling their uneducated white base to be suspect of people that attend college. I've even seen this among my in-laws: one of them literally said, "well you went to college" as a form of dismissal and a put-down. LOL.

Just like they cannot really define "woke", they cannot define "elitist", and that's how they want to paint education (but being a literal BILLIONAIRE is just salt of the earth stuff) as "elitist" or as Santorum put it when talking about wanting people to be able to go to college, being a "snob".

Santorum’s recent comment that’s causing a stir: “President Obama once said he wants everybody in America to go to college,” Santorum said to a crowd of Tea Party activists in Troy, Mich., on Feb. 25 “What a snob.”

Of course, Santorum himself went to school, and got a BA, MBA, and a JD. IOKIYAR.

I wanted a better source to verify it. Here's it directly from the source.

https://www.mpschools.org/

I am terribly sad that they had to do this, but I'm also glad that they did. I can guarantee you there are children who did/would learn about what happened yesterday and are probably beyond terrified of not coming home to a parent. And there are probably parents terrified of letting their children walk to school.

The best time to resist the regime was about a year ago. The second best time to resist the regime is now.

Beyond being terrified, it's probably just the right thing to do from a strategic standpoint here. ICE has tried barging into schools and holding kids hostage as a way of getting at their parents before, so they probably should just transition to remote learning like it's 2020 again until ICE fucks off.

e; and I say that knowing full well how much remote learning sucks for a lot of students and knowing what 2020 did to all the education statistics, but I don't see a better way to keep people safe

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 36 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Bro, not even just holding them hostage, but literally taking away and deporting actual children. These people are monsters.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

All schools in an area under assault from ICE should go remote. That's a great idea.

Yes, remote is not perfect, but the alternative is much worse.

[–] Crackhappy@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I applaud your middle ground, but appeasement is how WWII happened.

[–] gAlienLifeform@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Moving noncombatants to a more defensible location is not appeasement

[–] cheesybuddha@lemmy.world 51 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Ok, but after the killing, ICE went and raided a local highschool and attacked a bunch of students with chemical irritants

That's kind of a big fucking thing to leave out

[–] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (2 children)

Do you have a link? I did not hear about that? I need proof when I make all my Trumpers friends feel bad.

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 34 points 2 months ago (3 children)

They need to start deploying police to where ICE is. And detaining them.

The time for half measures is over, arrest every ICE agent and charge them with criminal conspiracy to violate the rights of citizens. Charge everyone as an accessory to murder if they don't testify against the organization.

Otherwise it's death from a thousand cuts as trump just continually crosses each new line.

I doubt any state has the balls, so if you can't trust the feds to protect you, you cant trust state/local cops, why the fuck aren't you carrying your own gun by now?

I've never seen a cop pull shit like this when the protestors have guns. They only make unarmed people panic then escalate to violence, if even a few people in the crowd are visibly armed, suddenly both sides are interested in de-escalation.

[–] noxypaws@pawb.social 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I think Minneapolis police should indeed be ordered to do this.

but it's extremely unlikely that they would. ACAB.

There was a Minnesota Fraternal Order of Police statement of support for the ICE murderer. Pigs protect pigs.

Also this is the same police force that murdered George Floyd. And fuck all has been done about them since, Frey talks big but can't or won't accomplish anything.

[–] cheesybuddha@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago

Cops stick together.

Some of those that work forces, etc.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 0 points 2 months ago (3 children)

Deploy police? So they can argue over which unarmed taxpayer they can shoot? Any municipal police that confronts ICE will be killed.

[–] Hawke@lemmy.world 14 points 2 months ago

Any municipal police that confronts ICE will be killed.

But seriously maybe they’ll take a few with them or even more likely that ICE will just run away in the face of actual resistance.

[–] atzanteol@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 months ago

"911? Yes, there's a man with a gun outside a school..."

[–] theneverfox@pawb.social 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

The police are probably better shots. Definitely better at tactics too

Training, go figure

[–] NikkiDimes@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Ehh, I wouldn't be so sure. I'm pretty sure ICE has a decent bit more training than your average municipal cop. A lot of them are ex military as well, such as Jonathon Ross, hence his itchy trigger finger.

[–] theneverfox@pawb.social 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

They're literally recruited from white supremacist groups and handed a gun that they may or may not know how to use already

[–] NikkiDimes@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I, unfortunately, have had the pleasure of knowing a couple of ICE agents before all of this and can tell you that their training, at least historically, was more involved than that of your typical police force. They have dedicated training facilities that all members are sent to for several months.

To be fair though, yeah, I'm sure that's all gone out the window in their current phase rapid hiring any piece of shit that wants to shoot brown people, so the point is moot anyway... nevermind.

[–] theneverfox@pawb.social 2 points 2 months ago

Fair, I'm sure they used to do real training back when we were a real country

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 21 points 2 months ago (1 children)

American schools are now being closed for fear of violent masked federal goons.

This is conservative America.

If you don't vote against it, you are part of the problem.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 2 months ago

conservatives are anti-intellectuals, so schools are probably not on thier priorities right now, its anti-woke is thier primary concern.

[–] DudeImMacGyver@kbin.earth 6 points 2 months ago

"They" probably don't "want" the kids to get "murdered"?

"Good job", Newsweek!

[–] dovah@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)
[–] Sculptor9157@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago

Because the shooting didn't happen IN the school, so it is an unexpected event that requires "caution".

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

That makes me think it'd be great if there was a way to give everyone notice of just where ICE is and where they are heading, and everyone basically goes into their houses/businesses and lock up and go elsewhere, in the opposite direction of wherever ICE is.

No one driving by them. No one walking nearby. No open stores, offices, schools, universities..

If there were some way to do this nearly perfectly, what would ICE then do? Start breaking into houses and businesses and schools that are locked down?

I realize it's nearly impossible to do, especially with complicit phone platforms making something like this for citizen safety very difficult to do. But it'd be interesting to see...

[–] TheDeepState@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

I’m glad that they are getting all the families together so it is easier for ICE to round them up.
