Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

In the 40s, after you kill Hitler

In the 2016 show 11.22.63, Jake Epping, a recently divorced English teacher from Maine discovers that his friend's diner had a portal that allows him to travel back to 1963.

Jake uses this portal to travel back in time to try to save Kenedy from being assassinated. His friend had done the same, though it was stated in passing that he also used it to by meat on the cheap for his burgers at the diner.

This is to say that the diner owner had it right. Fuck Kennedy, I'm getting those 1963 groceries with the good fats.

Keep in mind that people made a lot less back then, so the groceries weren’t as affordable as they appear 40 years later. and you can’t tap your smartphone to pay, so you might run into some trouble. Even modern cash wouldn’t work back then, unless you play all in one dollar bills. Fives, tens, 20s, 50s, and 100s have all changed. People in the 1980s would think you’re playing with monopoly money.

Bring a fake checkbook, fraud was a lot easier back in the '80s.

[–] homes@piefed.world 0 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago) (2 children)

Not that easy. Even back in the 80s, they frequently wrote your drivers license number down on the back, especially at chain businesses like supermarkets

[–] Asfalttikyntaja@sopuli.xyz 3 points 2 hours ago

It doesn’t matter, your Time Machine doesn’t need drivers license.

[–] titanicx@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 hours ago

I dunno, it was pretty easy to do it.

[–] stylusmobilus@aussie.zone 7 points 5 hours ago

It might be hard to believe but some things were worse back then in terms of quality and choice.

Potato chips or crisps are an example of this. Today they’re both better and there’s far more choice. I don’t find there to be a whole lot of difference in quality of fresh produce either but choices of both where to get it from and the range available is greatly improved.

Things like confectionery (especially chocolate) and processed foods are way worse though.

Mileage may vary elsewhere, I’m in Australia.

I want to be able to shop in a mall in the 90s. Maybe also a 90s toys r us.

[–] titanicx@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 hours ago

Mid 2000s toysrus was better for video games.

[–] fixmycode@feddit.cl 1 points 3 hours ago

get an early start on those babies

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 6 points 7 hours ago

I vividly remember my mother griping about how expensive everything had become and asking how anybody was supposed to afford that. Some things just never change.

[–] thefluffiest@feddit.nl 30 points 11 hours ago (2 children)

Why go back in time if there’s plenty of fascists to kill right here and now?

[–] FukOui@lemmy.zip 6 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)

You mean fascists in the 3 comma club with their own private militaries and goons in government, chilling inside their doomsday bunkers?

[–] IWW4@lemmy.zip 22 points 11 hours ago

That is one of the set ups in 11/22/63. A guy was buying all the food for his diner by going back in time.

[–] morto@piefed.social 4 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Doesn't work in my country, because there were different currencies during the 80s (current one would have no value) and it was a period oh high economic instability and poverty

[–] homes@piefed.world 4 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Even in the United States, all of the paper money looks very different than it used to in the 1980s except for the one dollar bill. Trying to use today’s money in the past wouldn’t work in a lot of places.

[–] Darkcoffee@sh.itjust.works 15 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Unfortunately this is how fascism starts.

We can fix the system, but instead fascists use the excuse of poverty or a broken system to gain power.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 15 points 10 hours ago (3 children)

Literally how hitler became popular in Germany. He basically said "your lives are shit, this country should be ashamed of how poor it's gotten, but I'm here now to improve everyones lives, and blame it on someone who isn't you".

And people said "Yeah, that guy isn't afraid to tell the truth!"

History doesn't repeat itself, but it often rhymes.

[–] Darkcoffee@sh.itjust.works 4 points 6 hours ago

The only reason not to kill baby Hitler is because his administration was somewhat incompetent... Someone far more skilled could rise up if he isn't the one to do it and commit even more atrocities.

Otherwise, baby hitler getting thrown off the building. Every time.

[–] Deceptichum@quokk.au 5 points 9 hours ago

They also said "This guy really cares about Germany", which is getting harder for Magats to pretend everyday.

[–] Triumph@fedia.io 6 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

"What i want to hear" always wins over truth, even if the former makes absolutely no sense.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 1 points 9 hours ago (3 children)

I mean......to be fair, he did achieve all his promises. He got people back to work, making living wages.

There's just this HUGE astrict next to that statement that he did so by murdering millions of people, thus creating a demand for jobs. He also only counted German born white heterosexual males. Sure, unemployment was virtually nonexistant, but women, gays, mentally challenged, other races all were not included in the employment pool.

And the jobs they held were manufacturing war efforts. Whether that was building tanks, making food rations, drilling for oil, it all paid a living wage, and they got to blame someone who wasn't them.

You ALWAYS have to look for the astrict. It's like the terms and conditions of the monkeys paw.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago

Dammit. I typed that, and then said "no....that don't look right....."

Then I typed "asterict", and said "That don't look right either......"

[–] Triumph@fedia.io 2 points 8 hours ago

They did it by both stealing from the people who weren't them and financial fraud.

[–] Deceptichum@quokk.au 1 points 9 hours ago

They also tanked the economy and had to go to war to stave off the impending collapse.

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 10 points 11 hours ago (2 children)

Have you been watching Supermarket Sweep?

Which of these costs more than $1: Jiffy Pop, Pledge, or Rice a Roni, the San Francisco treat?

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 4 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Now I gotta wake up early to turn on Price is Right to see how insane the prices are for all the bidding parts.

...It's still on the air, right? 🤔

[–] HeyJoe@lemmy.world 2 points 6 hours ago

Yup, its the oldest ongoing game show and will be it's 55th season this year hosted by Drew Carey.

[–] baggachipz@sh.itjust.works 1 points 7 hours ago

I’ll take Rice a Roni, bob!

[–] Hegar@fedia.io 4 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

People always seem to think killing hitler would help, but part of the reason no one assassinated him is because the allies wanted hitler alive to continue making terrible decisions.

Imagine how much worse the first trump regime would've been if trump wasn't making any of the decisions - we don't have to imagine because we're living it now.

[–] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 3 points 8 hours ago

If it wasn't Hitler it would have been someone else. I don't know why everyone thinks one person was solely responsible for all of it.

[–] dan1101@lemmy.world 4 points 11 hours ago

There was some groovy shopping music.

[–] tio_bira@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

I would back in time and make my grandma do a full check-up to early discover his brain cancer before become malignant.

Also would try to learn japanese and go back in 2019 and try to force Miura to do a heart check-up

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 3 points 10 hours ago (2 children)

grandma

his brain cancer

.........what?

[–] noseatbelt@piefed.ca 2 points 2 hours ago

Some people whose first language doesn't have gendered pronouns mix them up when they speak English.

[–] LordMayor@piefed.social 2 points 10 hours ago

Maybe, they transitioned before the diagnosis?

But, it was the ‘80s…
