Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body.

If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include not just the twitter.com URL but also Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source (archive.today, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org). Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed.

Mass-tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken Markov chain bot will result in a comm ban.

Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.

Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned.

Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society.

Airbus said a recent incident had revealed that solar flares may corrupt data critical to the functioning of flight controls.

This is incredibly interesting, I hope the final report includes specific details of the data corruption and what they did to fix it. Actually it's more interesting because the fix is reverting to a previous software version so they somehow introduced a vulnerability to single event upsets I'm guessing. I'd love to know how often these sort of events happen (not just when they cause issues but bit-flips in general). I know that flying high they are exposed to higher levels of radiation than on the ground.

Airbus engineers want some of that sweet, sweet media attention so they started to do Boeing cosplay.

Europe's Airbus said on Friday it was ordering immediate repairs to 6,000 of its widely used A320 family of jets in a sweeping recall affecting more than half the global fleet, threatening upheaval during the busiest travel weekend of the year in the United States and disruption worldwide.

Doing this proactively after a single incident instead of waiting for a crash to force their hand means it's not a very lore-accurate cosplay.

Rookie mistake. Learning curve. Give them time.

if ( Fuselage.getInstance().getEngineCount() == 2 ) {
    foreach ( Engine engine : Fuselage.getInstance().getEngines() ) {
        engine.setThrottleLevel( 100.00d );
    }
}

Ah, see, here's your problem -- you have to make sure the engines are still attached before you just command them to full throttle. wtyp-gang

The spec says engine references are supposed to be removed from the Fuselage instance when they're destroyed.

Please raise this issue with the engine team.

Closing this ticket.

Enough with the airplanes flown by software. Give me the Red Baron in the cockpit and let him do his thing.

[–] Lemonade@hexbear.net 13 points 1 day ago (5 children)

If a plane was flown start to finish without software there would be thousands of crashes each year. What do you think autopilot is? Do you expect pilots to fly using maps and compasses?

[–] blunder@hexbear.net 2 points 13 hours ago

I'm partially kidding but partially not. Ever since it was revealed that the 737 MAX 8 came with software that the pilots were not briefed on at all because it was supposed to be irrelevant, and then it turned out that the software just pointed the nose at the ground, I'm incredibly skeptical of what else we don't know about.

If I recall correctly, in the MAX 8's case, they added the nose-pointing "feature" because the engines are too big for the body of that plane, so they slapped it on instead of properly engineering a functional aircraft.

I don't recall anyone from Boeing going to prison or even losing their job for killing 346 people, so if there are no repercussions to using poorly-tested software to compensate for poor engineering resulting in hundreds of deaths... it greatly hurts my confidence in modern jet manufacture. I know the 320 is not a new airframe like the MAX 8 was but still.

no i expect them to use an extensive series of navigation towers

Nah I’m good I’ll keep my magenta line thank you very much.

Seeing as you never got an answer, the person you were responding to was being wildly sarcastic. He definitely doesn't think that planes should be hand-flown. He's presenting the version of a stupid opinion like "I have an immune system so I don't need medicine" or "Kids in my day never needed car seats or seat belts" in reference to the use of flight software/automation.
