Ah you know what, fair enough. As much as, to me, all these universes feel like the inauthentic, uncreative, soulless machinations of an algorithm-led profit committee, I'm sure much of the art I like is shitty pretentious drivel to other people.

The world is fucked, everything is hard. If people like this, I'm happy they've got something that makes their life feel easier, just for a bit.

Mmm, feel that creativity. There's money to be made so sequels need to be "figured out". Or you could just make films when you have stories to tell?

No? Well I guess that's why I don't have a private jet.

C'mon..! You're trying to tell me the whole reason that Tolkien wrote The Hobbit wasn't to jumpstart the Middle Earth Extended Universe?!?1?

P'shaw! I say!

[–] the_crotch@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 hours ago

It actually was. He started Lord of the rings but no publishers wanted to buy it so he wrote the Hobbit as it was shorter and aimed at children so it would be easier to sell and act as a foot in the door to the other books.

“Let’s oversaturate the absolute shit out of this and suck up all the money we can!”

We'll take that thing you love and run it into the fucking ground for our profit!

This is the way.

I for one welcome our new wicked cinematic universe.

Six movies to rule them all!.... to start with!

[–] dfyx@lemmy.helios42.de 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Gregory Maguire's "The Wicked Years" currently consists of like... eight or nine books I think? But seriously, if they try to turn each of them into a movie or worse, multiple movies, I really don't know how to deal with that.

[–] Zorque@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Isn't it also fairly significantly different, both in tone and outcomes?

[–] Wilco@lemmy.zip 25 points 1 day ago

Wouldn't the sequel just be the Wizard of Oz?

Well, the whole plot twist of Wicked is that

Tap for spoilerElphaba has faked her death. She used the misconception that water could melt her to trick Dorothy into trying just that and fled through a hidden trapdoor, leaving only her hat behind.

Not saying they should make more movies but at least the plot would make more sense than the Palpatine shitshow.

[–] cloudless@piefed.social 28 points 2 days ago (2 children)

They should make a prequel movie, a novel, and a broadway musical as well.

... oh wait.

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 3 points 1 day ago

And then the Wizard of Oz can be the new Avengers villain!

[–] fonix232@fedia.io 7 points 2 days ago

And a sequel to the prequel that plays before the current movie.... you could even call it... the pre-sequel!

[–] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago

There's a prequel that focuses on Dorothy. They should make that into a movie.

I think it's called "The Grapes of Wrath".

Not sure Cynthia Erivo's or Ariana Grande's mental state could survive a third+ film.

[–] Devconsole@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

Replace them with gen AI.

[–] ceenote@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago

Cinematic Universes are the future of cinema! By which I mean it's all they're going to make so you better learn to like them.

Movie makes money, owners receiving profit swear they will seek more money with more products!

Hopefully it's at least good. My wife will drag me to see this eventually.

My wife will drag me to see this eventually.

Dress or jumpsuit?

I think a dress would be way more comfortable.

If i'm going to be fabulous, I need to feel fabulous too. Not sure which would accomplish that better :P

[–] Faydaikin@beehaw.org 3 points 2 days ago

People still go to the movies?

[–] IWW4@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Awesome!

Wicked is the best Wizard Oz product since the 1939 sequel.

I adore The Wiz but it does have its warts.

[–] paraphrand@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

I hear the thing at that Sphere in Vegas is an overdone disrespectful AI abomination.

[–] IWW4@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah

Why are you telling me this?

[–] paraphrand@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago

Oh, it just reinforces your point. And because I just became aware of the Vegas thing, I’m sure others don’t know about it yet too. It’s one of those comments that is for the group (anyone reading the post), not just for you.

[–] Thatuserguy@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Elphaba and Glenda will return...

[–] Iheartcheese@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Isn't there a book about her kid?
