C'mon..! You're trying to tell me the whole reason that Tolkien wrote The Hobbit wasn't to jumpstart the Middle Earth Extended Universe?!?1?

It actually was. He started Lord of the rings but no publishers wanted to buy it so he wrote the Hobbit as it was shorter and aimed at children so it would be easier to sell and act as a foot in the door to the other books.
