Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

YP supporters will be forced to choose between the two supposed co-leaders, after a week of yet more hostile briefings by each camp against the other’s figurehead, instead of a joint event depicting unity, if not personal then at least of purpose before the party’s founding conference.

What a clusterfuck of farcical proportions this whole thing has turned out to be.

A very spiritually Trotskyist thing to do.

Yeah, you can really tell the genealogy of the UK left here.

So fucked, my heart is broken and I guarantee the Greens won't step up in the face of Farageaggedon, we need to organise outside the electoral system

Edit: I'm gonna hijack this thread to ask if there are any socialist/communist/whatever orgs even worth joining in the UK? Trying to do mutual aid but without a mass movement we're all cooked. Desperately seeking a proper org but it seems like it's either radlibs screaming about how China is Imperialist or demented Trots who think being transgender was an MI5 plot invented by Tony Blair in 1997

Hey now, don't sell the UK left short like that. Sometimes it's both of those at once.

What makes you think the greens won't step up? Zack has been a huge critic of Farage's politics and personality, and they've got the membership numbers and approval within demographics as well.

[–] WeedReference420@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago

I very much could be (and hope to be) wrong but to me it feels like at best we'll get a repeat of the Corbyn years where people will rally behind a singular figure pitching reform of the system that will get throttled or neutered by the establishment the moment it comes anywhere near electoral success (albeit on a smaller scale), and then when Reform get in a lot of the membership will become disillusioned and the leadership won't do anything other than repeatedly condemning what Farage is up to whilst waiting for the next election while we run down the clock on stuff like climate collapse.

I'm certainly not saying to not get involved if you want to, and it does seem like the Greens will probably be the leftmost party in the running (albeit far closer to Social Democracy rather than anything that challenges Capitalism - another problem with electoral politics in general I guess), but I've spoken to a few people very enthusiastic about the Greens who act completely aghast at the idea that Reform are still likely to be the ones in power and seem to have gotten back on the kick of thinking we can dismantle Capitalism if we democracy hard enough, and immediately shut down the idea of building proper duel power or making any plans to undermine Farage outside of the electoral system from within the UK. There is something called Greens Organise which is supposed to be reaching out to trade unions and the like but from what I've seen still seems like an extension of the party's electoral strategy but it's fairly new so who knows.

For what it's worth I think Your Party would have probably been fairly similar in the grand scheme of things, having been on Corbyn's wild ride between 2015-2019 I feel fairly burned out on mainstream party politics in general so maybe I'm just bitter. Again, not shitting on anyone who has signed up to the Greens, definitely doesn't seem like there's many mass movements to join otherwise, but I worry we're just making all the same mistakes again at a time when things are even more desperate.

Jeez, british politics are as depressing as the US, except it's self-contained because they thankfully have little impact on the world nowadays.. if the Green Party can pull and like unite the splits that'd be cool but I'm just wishfully thinking..

[–] hollowmines@hexbear.net 25 points 1 month ago

absolute doddering mess, what a shame

[–] sewer_rat_420@hexbear.net 23 points 1 month ago

What a god damn mess. At least the Greens are looking like a decent alternative until the brits can get a real socialist party sorted out

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

im picking up the vibe of "hexbear supports sultana instead of Corbyn" which I got the last time this was posted about but which still confuses me because I have never seen her name mentioned before, or outside of, the context of "wrecking the new party" which was, i understood, Jeremy corbyn's project to begin with

[–] Ram_The_Manparts@hexbear.net 14 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Corbyn allied himself with landlords and bigots, while Sultana wanted an actual socialist party. It's not that hard to understand.

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

I must have missed the part where anybody explained any of that or explained why this person who seemed to appear out of the aether specifically to be involved in this controversy is more trustworthy than the person who literally started this party to begin with

If Jeremy "worse than Bernie Sanders, suddenly" Corbyn pledged to side with the landlords and bigots in the party he iirc started to combat the landlords and bigots then why hasn't Sultana started her own party instead of whatever it is they're both doing here if not to wreck it up, when it was, again, unless Im wrong, explicitly corbyn's project to begin with

If Corbyn hit his head and turned into john fetterman people should have informed me

[–] hellinkilla@hexbear.net 7 points 1 month ago

I guess I was offline the day this was being explained, too.

My vague understanding is that one of them had money and the other had a massive mailing list. I think that's from trash future (November Kelly).

I don't have the impression anyone had any good, strong ideas. Other than "let's get out of the fucking labour party". That's a good start but I guess they figured the details would sort themselves out. No name; no platform, no internal structure. All the tensions of anticommunist leftwing parties.
