We actually never went anywhere, we just continue to be a couple of working shmucks with very little orgone left at the end of the day to promote a damn podcast. Can you imagine a more humiliating activity? “Hey everyone listen to my podcast!” Disgusting behavior.

In all seriousness my dear friend and super producer has been putting his whole ass into producing this little mini-series of ours about Florida.

The whole idea is to apply a lil of the ol Dialectical Materialism to the hot house horror story that is the history of Florida. It’s a very personal story for me and something I have struggled to understand my entire life.

We are most certainly going to get things wrong because; 1. We are fallable (and I, personally, am kinda lazy) and 2. Florida history is very contentious and there is a lot that is still hidden/lost/unknown.

I invite all of you to check it out and please subscribe if you can. We are also seeking out interviews with Floridians and particularly anyone with an indigenous background. So if that sounds like you and you wanna sound off about what these mayo-ass white boys are missing, we would love to have you!

I think in the specific context of trying to take shine off being associated with hexbear. Not only saying "here I am a hexbear user and I made something" but specifically implying some sort of community endorsement.

Making the first/only source of content a patreon sort of exhibits an acquisitive motivation which is not compatible with hexbear. I had the same gut reaction when I saw the link.

I think better would be to put the multimedia stuff for free on popular (YouTube/soundcloud) and libre (peertube etc) platforms. Looking at the patreon site I see they have extensive show notes (which is amazing I love it when those are available), those should be posted first to a public blog. and have a patreon optionally, as a secondary platform, for those who want to donate. In addition to one of the libre payment platforms. Producers should also provide a patreon feed to https://jumble.top/ . But all that that could be an administrative/technical barrier to implement and maybe just never considered.

Therefore, despite my first impulse reaction, I was interested to listen and maybe provide constructive feedback later.

My angle is “listen to me and some of my friends scream into the void together as a cathartic escape from the roles we are coerced by capitalism to have to play for the majority of our waking lives” so yeah it’s your classic grifting to the left. A famously lucrative and risk-free undertaking!

The episode I posted is free and there’s a ton of other free episodes on there.

Why even make this comment? Are you putting yourself out there in any way? Would you make this snide remark to a person you actually know IRL? I sincerely doubt it.

I thought your post was fine but this behavior in your comments literally makes me not want to listen to it. I have plenty of slop to consume already. You should probably do some self reflection on this. If you had simply said, "Hey it's free, so are most (or half or whatever) of our episodes" and let it go you would not have garnered the following critical responses. And speaking to your first response that was fine, until you began calling people cowards and dorks, I am being 100% sincere here and speaking from experience.

I can relate to that more than you know. It's cost me more than it's earned me though. I'll probably give it a listen still and I see you've been here 5 years so what I presume is from the start. Just giving an outsiders' perspective on the whole exchange. Their comment was pretty shitty but you don't gotta escalate like that. Especially not in a place like this where I find the cynicism to be far more tempered than most of the internet.

Yeah you’re right honestly and I really appreciate you talking me down like this. I’m not neurotypical and I’ve never felt like I fully understood how to interact online.

I just feel like everyone is assuming some kind of malintent or grift or something I don’t even fully understand because I have a patreon with my friends that truly only exists as a means to hopefully give my producer an out from his bullshit job.

I’ve explained in previous posts about the show that the vision is to be successful enough that we can spring him loose from the trap of wage labor to be able to seek out and empower marginalized voices and whatever else we find interesting to publish and preserve those stories. All of the hosts have agreed to this framework and the main show is just the flagship fundraising vehicle that we all contribute too. We’ve been kicking around the idea of interviewing older queer couples about the stories of their relationships for years. Obviously we would like to pay them for those stories. We’re not out here trying to be the new podcast millionaires and yet it feels like we’re on the recieving end of the latent parasocial grievance these people have about podcasters.

But again, even if I feel they are in the wrong, I am more than willing to admit I have mishandled this whole exchange. I would never claim to be a good or competent podcaster or poster. We’re all just doing our best.

But of course, that's assuming that you had common sense in that situation that you have chosen not to show here, and since I won't pretend that I know you -- a dignity you didn't afford to the other user -- I will acknowledge the full possibility that you may behave in such a maladjusted way in real life, too. I simply don't know, I'm just hoping that that's not the case so perhaps it can be used as a point of contrast to how inappropriate your behavior here is.

It's bad for the space and everyone in it to make these ridiculous, highly presumptuous denouncements of "haters" who just don't like receiving unsolicited advertising even on their shitty little communist forum. You don't know about his life and it's really shitty behavior to pretend that you do to make a half-assed attempt at humiliating him.

If you're having trouble understanding something, then instead of instantly jumping to making it oppositional and talking about how that's my fault, you are welcome to ask and I'd be happy to help explain anything I said. It's just rather difficult to explain things if you don't explain what has confused you to begin with.

Did I assert intellectual authority? I feel like there's a lot of stuff that you brought here and decided to just kind of put on me that don't have very much to do with me. To model not being presumptuous, I won't try to tell you what's going on with you that produces this behavior, but I don't think it's constructive, regardless of its origin.

You really like saying this, don't you? It kind of loses its power when I can see you directing it at others too, though. At that point, it just kind of comes off as something you like to tell people. "Zingers" like this are also a good example of not being constructive, because you aren't really saying anything with it that goes beyond "fuck you". Doubly so with the "12" bit, of course.

I don't agree with the way the OP handled this comment, but if it's between them posting this here and them posting in mutual aid bc they just really need the money then I have no problem with it, I don't know their situation and everyone's gotta eat, if they can do it by entertaining and/or generating leftist propaganda then no problem by me.

Ironically the description is a bit too tinged with irony for me to be able to decipher though, if that was the motivation for the money ask then being up front probably would have played better.

I was not able to find any RSS feed on the patreon. It think it may have been disabled in the project settings but not 100% certain of that. Could be that patreon as a service is making it impossible to find because RSS is contrary to their business model.

Found the following other feeds by websearching: Libsyn (RSS link), Apple Podcasts, Spotify. There is a Youtube channel of the same name; looks unrelated.

Not clear to me if any of the above are sanctioned by the producers of the show and I'd be interested to find out, just to better understand how podcasting works. Do all or some of the above just somehow scrape patreon?

So our producer understands all of this better because I am not very technologically competent but my understanding is that we use libsyn to feed out to apple and Spotify because we have to pay for that hosting and we only have so much. We are probably overdue for an upgrade their but Patreon does not charge for file hosting (atleast not directly) so that is where the all of the episodes are posted. The free episodes are always unlocked and available their as well. We also have a back catalogue of other epsisodes where we do other topical discussions. We just did a good one about the history of Liberalism. We are paywalling most of the FL series but we will probably end up releasing it all on the free feed eventually. It’s a lot more heavily edited than the normal eps so Vane wanted to pay wall it up front. We decided to release this ep free because we enjoyed this discussion and we think the subject matter ends up being germane to the modern day.

We have a few different patreon tiers that I don’t quite fully understand but I think the idea is that at the $3 tier you get the news updates right away (often delayed because of hosting) and at the $5 tier you get everything. Open to suggestions for other member perks because we are very much figuring this out as we go.

The YouTube channel is related to the show but Vane cuts the citations and show notes into the video which takes a lot of time so the YouTube channel is on a major delay compared to the rest of the feed. We’re doing what we can with what we’ve got.

There is most certainly a more optimal way to do things but as I said, we are very much figuring things out as we go.
