Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

This is good for Bitcoin.

Unironically though it does seem as the western economies collapse we're seeing people pull money out of less conventional things like Bitcoin and 401ks to try to make ends meet. The Real Fun time happens when those start running dry and people still can't make ends meet. Capitalism must drain all of these savings and savings adjacent accounts to continue to prop itself up; once those are empty it will have to find yet another source of "value"

I already had to liquidate my IRA to make ends meet this year. And I think we are relatively well off when it comes to income.

I had a pizza delivery driver, she was maybe 50-60 years old, the other day venting to me how she didn't usually take on the night shifts because it's to dark out for her, but she has to. Then she apologized for venting to a customer but I tried to let her know I understood.

The working class in this country is just so worn thin at this point and we have nothing to show for it. This Christmas is going to be a disaster for the retail sector.

People are also already selling plasma too, so I can’t even make the joke about selling our literal bodies to make ends meet…

Jesus christ it's worth over 96k now?

I almost bought $1k of it in 2009 😭

[–] InappropriateEmote@hexbear.net 16 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I did buy over $700 of it in 2012 with the intent to use it to buy drugs. But I lost the passkey to my wallet (see: drugs). It's still there in that wallet, in the tens of thousands of dollars or something, maybe more but it's too painful to do the math. I can still remember the first half of the pass phrase too. If I remembered the second half of the passphrase it would change my life in a bigger way than anything else ever has (yay for being below poverty-line level of poor). It's gone, though. There is no way I will ever remember it. I console myself by telling myself that if I hadn't lost the password, it just would have gone to drugs, which is true. I'm still haunted by it anyway.

How many digits are the missing part of the key?

[–] JustSo@hexbear.net 3 points 2 months ago

Aw hell no. Can you get a nerd to help you run an automated brute force on it?

It sounds like you probably have enough info about the key to reduce the complexity and time to crack the key significantly.

I've lost bitcoin too but it's gone gone.

I think a few weeks ago it was around $128k

I remember when my friend was telling me about it when it was $0.08. I could have bought $100 or more at the time easily but felt like it was never gonna take off.

bitcoin black friday sale: 90% off!

but really though this just means the ghouls are liquidating their supply so they can pump it back up again

[–] roux@hexbear.net 11 points 2 months ago

It does that after every run up. Whenever you sees it trending, always expect a dump shortly after.
