Or like enamel growth on teeth experts.

Or tinnitus research.

Or migraine research.

Or longevity research.

Or any other research actually.

[–] unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de 42 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

Or you know... you could make food and water and renewable energy infrastructure for the entire planet.

[–] NoForwardslashS@sopuli.xyz 18 points 3 weeks ago

But those things are obviously not as important as improving our predictive text algorithms!

OR we give it all to the rich.

[–] ILoveUnions@lemmy.world 16 points 3 weeks ago (7 children)

Tbh I don't get why all these men who are as rich as god aren't pumping large portions of the fortune into longevity research. Do they not want to live forever? We finally live in a time where we are starting to see real possibilities of growing all organs, and maybe even curing memory loss due to age. And they just, don't seem worried?

[–] currycourier@lemmy.world 13 points 3 weeks ago

Well here's the thing. Rich people are kinda dumb.

[–] Valmond@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

And just plain longevity research, which have again and again proven to work by repairing things, and thus rejuvenating us (works in mice \TM).

My bet is that either they are drugged up and their brain are mush, or fooled that AI will do it just more money bro plz.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

That's precisely why they're pumping money into AI research. At this point mind uploading seems inevitable, but not necessarily in our lifetimes.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 4 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

I think that's a long way to go before that's a possibility. The main issue been the question if how we scan a brain.

They are. Just not in ways that are accessible to the general public.

Or longevity research.

This one freaks me out. Rich people living long lives, long enough to build cults around them that the mortal poor will revere even more than they do now

[–] CheeseNoodle@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

There's a rational argument for making live extension universal, namely that so long as you increase healthspan you've essentially delayed retirement by X years meaning you get a higher working to retirement ratio out of each worker. Unfortunately the people in charge are not rational and would probably support poisoning the drinking water to make themselves comparatively longer lived by ensuring no one else lives past 60 if they thought they could get away with it.

I don't want to live longer in this world.

[–] banause@feddit.org 6 points 2 weeks ago

Shortlivity is already well researched tho.

[–] Rcklsabndn@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 weeks ago

I suggest whiskey and cigarettes.

[–] wuffah@lemmy.world 59 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

How about just universal healthcare, housing, and education?

[–] rustydrd@sh.itjust.works 8 points 3 weeks ago

See, now you're just being ridiculous.

[–] Triumph@fedia.io 53 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

They might end up shooting the dolphin up with acid and jerking it off until it commits suicide.

[–] MotoAsh@piefed.social 31 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

We can all hope to go out in such glorious fashion.

I was going to say, something like 'actual' UBI given to the most indigent and homeless, and you would see some measurable change.

Maybe they should have spent the money on fusion research first. They could have had nearly free power, and make a fortune selling off the rest, all while saving the climate.

[–] Rooster326@programming.dev 4 points 3 weeks ago

The cruelty is the point

[–] oopsgodisdeadmybad@lemmy.zip 15 points 2 weeks ago

I support actually doing this.

As in literally taking the money straight out of the billionaire funding pockets. But not in parity with the amounts used for AI funding, I just mean all of it. And not simply "all of it", but actually all of it, to the point where they're in soup kitchen lines and panhandling, hoping to get enough to pay for dinner.

Take all that money and put it in science research, charities, etc.

If they can't get enough from the charities back to keep breathing, then oh well. Sorry people that deserve it got it instead, oh well, we'll make a note that we're all doing great on the money that was yours.

[–] Donkter@lemmy.world 14 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

Its funny, we dont fund all these things because they're "good enough" to work. And the reason we're dumping lumps into AI is because it doesn't even do "good enough" right now but there's a lot of people that expected it to already.

[–] BobsonDuggnut@lemmynsfw.com 9 points 3 weeks ago

These things dont get funded because they dont make enough (or are not expected to make enough) money

What's the total amount given to AI in a year? I'm curious how many decades we could solve world hunger, provide free healthcare for the planet, AND make advancements in renewable energy.

[–] ArsonButCute@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

But like honestly though, I've seen on YouTube people funded almost entirely through commissions and patrons manage metallurgical feats previously considered impossible like the forge welding of titanium to steel. Imagine what they could do with even a fraction of Nvidia's or OpenAI's budget?

[–] Apeman42@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago (5 children)

NileRed might make an actual Philosopher's Stone (out of Code Red Mountain Dew and Silly Putty or something).

The ice bucket challenge paid off in real medical breakthroughs within 2 years by raising 115 million. Komen had a HUGE impact on breast cancer research that lead to real medical improvements that saved lives.

If we dumped AI money broadly into almost any field of research we'd see more people shift toward that field to get funding. We'd see struggling projects get the funding they need to continue. We'd see stuff that wasn't pursued because it's a long shot get the funding it needs. Better staffed and equipped labs where work is already being done.

You'd see an explosion in progress over the coming years.

If we could communicate with dolphins or primates I'm sure we'll use the tech for military use, breeding millions of primates in captivity to be sent to the frontline

[–] Rcklsabndn@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 weeks ago

'breeding millions of primates in captivity to be sent to the frontline'

Isn't this what Texas/Arkansas is already purposed for?

I'll take some of that blacksmith funding. My plan is to take two laminated Damascus swords and then forge weld them together so you get twice the sword for your money.

[–] AeonFelis@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

Instead of welding them directly, can you please connect them with a nunchucks chain?

I have this thought often, what if instead of football and baseball we got around to watch a team if engineers do cool science shit for the season.

Jet pack cyber dogs can play capture the flag, recreation of midway w drones replacing fighter planes, pizza deliver drones that fly so high entry warms your pie.

Just saying paying men to move ball ain't for me....so I wanna see your money and support go to something I think cool.

Imagine if we just awarded it every year to the farmer who can grow the largest yield per acre or the manufacturer who built the best car.

[–] TypFaffke@feddit.org 3 points 3 weeks ago

People wouldn't have AI girlfriends, but sea mammal or sword girlfriends instead. So no big change really
