I love bleeding hearts. There used to be a bunch on them in my front garden growing up, I used to crush them and try to make dye from it when I was little.

Morning glory! Grows easily. Pretty leaves. Pretty blooms. Blooms abundantly. Love 'em!

Gazanias are my favorite. Unpretentious little suns blazing away in the garden. What's not to like.

Strelitzia reginae, the bird of paradise.

It's used as a drought-tolerant ornamental here in California.

EDIT: If I get a second choice, Albizia julibrissin, the pink silk tree.

Makes great tea :3

Wisteria

I love the scent. A building nearby has a giant wall full of these flowers. They look magical when they’re all in bloom.

[–] BoxOfFeet@lemmy.world 12 points 3 days ago

These bearded irises from the previous owner of my house.

[–] iii@mander.xyz 11 points 3 days ago

Cannabis indica

I really like cornflowers, its that colour. I remember sketching one for art class at school.

[–] wieson@feddit.org 3 points 2 days ago

Yes!!! It's so vibrant yet so frail.

[–] Nemo@slrpnk.net 10 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Lilac. Growing up we had out-of-control, seven-foot-high lilac hedges border two sides of the backyard. Smelling a lilac in bloom brings me right back to the secret forts I'd build beneath their branches.

[–] tal@lemmy.today 6 points 2 days ago (2 children)

You're doing great work with these pictures, friend :]

Fuck yeah! Love that beautiful smell!

[–] ButteryMonkey@piefed.social 3 points 2 days ago

I have them growing on the southeast side of my house next to the living room windows. I also have a late spring blooming lilac right next to another window so I get some super lovely bursts of scent for several weeks. Glorious.

I do not at all regret planting those, and they do a great job shading the brick from the sun and keeping the house cooler.

Passionflower.

They grow on a climbing vine and are followed by passionfruit, which is very tasty!

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Had these every in Florida, never saw them turn into a fruit.

[–] N0t_5ure@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

My neighbors in San Diego have the vines all over their fence and they produce tons of fruit. I don't know what their secret is.

Edit: I do know that there are some that just produce flowers, and no fruit. Maybe you had that type?

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 2 points 2 days ago

Likely, but now I want to try a passion fruit!

[–] neidu3@sh.itjust.works 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Cacti. They're prickly and stubborn. Just like myself.

Chrysanthemum. They’re pretty and make for good tea.

[–] Perspectivist@feddit.uk 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Fritillaria imperialis is quite unique looking one that I really like. I've been trying to grow one on my yard but it didn't flower at all last spring which was unfortunate.

Daphne mezereum is somewhat similar looking and is probably my favourite plant that grows natively where I live. Also very poisonous.

[–] Mesophar@pawb.social 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I'm a fan of Lantana, I love the variety of bright colors they come in. I think they're pretty, especially when they grow in a nice cluster.

[–] iSeth@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I heard an old wives' tale that their roots are thick enough to stop bamboo shoots. Any chance it's true?

[–] Mesophar@pawb.social 1 points 1 day ago

That I have no idea, but when healthy they do come in nice and thick, above and below ground. Would be incredible if they can stop bamboo!

[–] Penguincoder@beehaw.org 4 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Sunflowers are my favorite flower. Pretty and edible seeds :P

Beebalm!

Also known as Monarda. Smells so good and bees like it, so win-win.

Water lilies

Hate the smell though.

[–] Wytch@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Lillies, orchids, and lilacs. Orchids are so weird, just can't get over how alien they seem.

[–] tal@lemmy.today 4 points 2 days ago
[–] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 3 points 2 days ago

Maybe I'm a basic bitch but you can't go wrong with an orchid. Both cool-looking and interesting while simultaneously sprouting gorgeous flowers and come in such an abundance of different varieties.

Otherwise I have soft spot for pelargoniums simply because they're so incredibly stupid easy to take care of. Especially in a year where I've had a lot of trouble with plants I can appreciate that they're so reliable and not at all fussy.
