I see a lot of people recently calling Chamberlain "spineless" and saying that he "caved" to Hitler or "sold out Czechoslavakia in exchange for empty promises." But this is really problematic because you're not thinking of all the people who would've gotten hurt if this deal didn't go through. I mean, nobody wants a repeat of the Great War. And look, I hate Hitler as much as anyone, but he's given us his word that he'll be content with taking only the Sudetenla-

Sorry, what's that? Oh, I see.

As I was saying, Mr. Hitler has given us his word that he'll be content with just annexing all of Czechoslavakia.

What was he supposed to do? Throw Europe into a major conflict, just because some fascist seizes power, removes any semblance of democracy, and starts terrorizing minorities?

Look, at the end of the day, capitalist or fascist, we might not see eye to eye on every little detail but it's important to be the bigger person and reach across the aisle and give them every chance to stop being belligerent.

I mean, after all, if we can't work together, then who's going to kill all the leftists?

You can't write satire this subtle on Lemmy. People in the comments think you are actually defending Chamberlain.

Chamberlain wanted peace above all. He was facing a political crisis at home and a still recovering economy from WW1.

The peace deal with the Nazi wasn't spineless it was a lesson in what not to do when faced with fascism, something that perhaps needs to be relearned the hard way in modern times.

It's documented that ultimately he felt like he had failed the country, indeed he never recovered politically.

This is a shitpost, satirizing recent events in the US.

[–] PotatoesFall@discuss.tchncs.de 12 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I'm a little dumb what's the recent event

[–] PugJesus@piefed.social 16 points 2 days ago

Several US Senators of the Democratic Party have expressed intent to end the current government shutdown without gaining the concessions the rest of the party has been demanding. Unfortunately, they're numerous enough (8) that they may be able to force the issue.

[–] Objection@lemmy.ml 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The deal to end the shutdown. Imo the Dems caved, getting very little in exchange.

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The difference between the two, of course, was that at the time they thought Neville had really done it, and I can't even fathom even Schumer thinking he's done a great thing.

[–] PugJesus@piefed.social 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Schumer is still opposed to ending the shutdown to my knowledge.

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

What in the... Yeah you're right. I thought I had heard he was working on a deal and I'm so used to disappointment from him. The eight Dems are:

  • Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada
  • Dick Durbin of Illinois
  • John Fetterman of Pennsylvania
  • Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire
  • Tim Kaine of Virginia
  • Angus King of Maine
  • Jacky Rosen of Nevada
  • Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire

Edit: Now I'm hearing possibilities that Schumer did mastermind this, and these eight were picked? Fuck it either way, still hate the guy for being such a schmuck.

[–] zxqwas@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

Satire by misrepresentation of history. Of course you'll get these kinds of reply.

[–] MrNesser@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

Yeah I know. But I found th conjecture regarding Chamberlain quite interesting and decided to reply.

It's odd that we are still learning the same lessons 70+ years on

[–] icelimit@lemmy.ml 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I think it's likely that the war may have played out very differently had Sudetenland not been given. Imho it, and the subsequent invasion gave have much more justification and support for a declaration than had he stood firm. As there would have been a large 'what if' crowd.

I could be entirely wrong.

[–] Mrkawfee@feddit.uk 4 points 2 days ago

Small detail but the economy was still recovering from the Depression, not World War 1. The UK boomed in the 1920s.

[–] PugJesus@piefed.social 15 points 2 days ago (1 children)

This is particularly funny considering your apologia for Russian imperialism in Ukraine.

Of course, I'm sure had you been around at the time, you would have opposed Chamberlain then, as well - after all, the Soviets and the Nazis had a common enemy in the 'Western degenerates'. The Soviets couldn't well genocide Poland by themselves - though they certainly put in plenty of effort!

[–] gmtom@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

I will always come to the defence of Chamberlain from pop-history types.

He actually saved the UK by massively rearming the country in the lead up to the war, especially so the RAF. If it wasn't for his actions we would have likely lost the battle for Britain.

Also fun fact: at the time he was actually considered a war hawk by much of parliament and was pressured into being softer on Hitler than he wanted to.

[–] yesman@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Whenever anyone says Chamberlan "gave up" Czechoslovakia I ask one simple question: What was he supposed to do? He could have declared war, like the lion Churchill did for Poland. But I'll remind you that the only thing England sent to Poland was thoughts and prayers. Followed by over a year of "phony" war.

Look at a map. You'll notice that Czechoslovakia is quite far from England. With fucking Germany in between!

The whole Chamberlan meme is just right-wing propaganda to delegitimize diplomacy. It only makes sense if you don't think about it.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 2 days ago

I mean, after all, if we can't work together, then who's going to kill all the leftists?

I think Churchill could have done that on his own

[–] ms_lane@lemmy.world -3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

No, Chamberlain was spineless, against the Royal Family.

Czechia gave him a plan to crush the Nazis at the first stop, they baulked, since the prince loved Nazis.

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

The prince who, by the time Chamberlain was PM, had already abdicated, had been cut off by the King and was living in exile in France with that American woman? Is there some alternate timeline you’re subscribed to?
