40 million didn't seem like a record breaking box office weekend. Sure enough, it's only record breaking for the franchise.

It's actually in 443rd spot of the opening weekend charts. These are probably preliminary numbers and if they can add just another 50k to that total when the numbers are all in, they can move up to beat Chicken Little.

I'm sure the movie is fine, but these "xx breaks records!" headlines are so tired and fucking BS. As inflation carries on, OFC new records for static numbers will be set. Same for population for the most part. It's literally inevitable.

[–] redhorsejacket@lemmy.world 3 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

In broad terms, sure, but we're talking about the business of theatrical exhibition here, which over the past several years has had a real rough go of it. In some ways, this is because the industry is addicted to shooting itself in the kneecaps at ever opportunity, and in some ways because COVID accelerated the trend of people waiting for VOD rather than seeing something in the theater. So, a movie smashing box office records in today's environment is still newsworthy.

[–] MotoAsh@piefed.social 1 points 8 hours ago

But predator far predates all that as a franchise. This one's also not doing big numbers compared to all movies of the time period you say is rough. It's just beating its own franchise records, which is still nigh inevitable.

It's like being surprised that the newest Fantastic Four beat its older movies. All they have to do is deliver something that's not obvious junk.

[–] Embargo@lemmy.zip 38 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Sounds promising but I gotta say... That predator looks like shit.

[–] Bluefalcon@discuss.tchncs.de 10 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

One of the worse redesigns of a science fiction creature. Better then alienhuman but worse then Godzilla 98'.

[–] Onsotumenh@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 17 hours ago

Strongly reminds me of the JJAbrams Klingon redesign.

Oh record setting for Predator franchise films. I was trying to figure out why 40 million would be enough to break a box office record. Well okay then, don't think there's a lot of really super stiff competition in that record but okay good for them.

Those who have seen the recent releases of predator and alien movies, is it worth doing a marathon of them?

I mean Romulus, and the other time period predator movie, and this one.

[–] _Nico198X_@europe.pub 4 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

absolutely.

Rom is probably the best Alien movie since Aliens.

Prey is EXCELLENT, as is Killer of Killers.

Alien and Predator having a resurgence right now in quality.

[–] zaphod@sopuli.xyz 1 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Rom is probably the best Alien movie since Aliens.

Which says fuck all, everything after Aliens was crap and so is Romulus.

[–] _Nico198X_@europe.pub 3 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Sorry you didn't like it.

I enjoyed it. Nice setting, some nice work with gravity, good use of Facehuggers, cool uses of synths, great AV, very moody.

[–] zaphod@sopuli.xyz 1 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

spoilerThe weird alien human hybrid at the end pushes the film to a level comparable to Prometheus or Alien Resurrection.

[–] _Nico198X_@europe.pub 1 points 12 hours ago

i understand that comparison, though i find how Rom handled that better than the others.

spoilerthe Prometheus line of movies are canon so I do enjoy this connective tissue.

[–] snooggums@piefed.world 30 points 1 day ago (3 children)

I do recommend Prey as a great movie in the same setting but different time period. I also Romulus as a well made Alien movie that doesn't really do anything new but does hit the right notes for the franchise.

[–] lemmy_at_em@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

Prey was also directed by Dan Trachtenberg.

+1 it is a solid movie.

[–] TachyonTele@piefed.social 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Im definitely going to watch Prey. Lots of good feedback on that one

[–] neukenindekeuken@sh.itjust.works 1 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Its good, but predator 1 and 2 are better. Just to manage expectations.

[–] _Nico198X_@europe.pub 2 points 16 hours ago

very hard to beat the originals. but Prey was true to form and a worthy sequel.

Prey was pretty good.

[–] lemmie689@lemmy.sdf.org 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I liked Prey a lot. A very basic plot summary

a young Comanche woman trying to prove herself as a worthy warrior and hunter while a feral Predator visits Earth for the first time.

I havent followed the franchise tho. I watched this one bc it is disconnected from the other movies. The predator is not really the main story.

Prey was solid.

[–] VerseAndVermin@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Romulus was cool imo, but not mind blowing. To me it was good enough to warrant more. Was it as good as 1 or 2? No. Was it better than everything else? Yes, because unlike every Alien sequel, it is not a few good scenes in a bad movie. For better or worse, it is consistent.

I actually had my internet down for like 10 days and only had a handful of movies available to me and no books as I had just moved and was still awaiting their arrival. I ended up watching Romulus three times. to me it is the perfect example of "swimming in sevens." I had only a month prior marathoned all other Alien movies though, so maybe my brain was affected.

I cannot speak to the most recent 2 predator movies, but I liked Prey enough to watch it twice in a year. I think the same person did the John Goodman bunker movie, and I just think they are a competent person running the show for Predator stuff now.

[–] Lorindol@sopuli.xyz 3 points 15 hours ago

I share your opinion of Romulus.

The characters weren't bad, I really liked the setting and how it managed to bind the original and Prometheus together. It's a good Alien film and perhaps could've been even better, if they had just stuck with the horror tone instead of going full action in the third act. I got the feeling that the director/writer really wanted to blend the best parts of 1 and 2 into a single film.

[–] TachyonTele@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago

Very cool, thank you

I mean, it wasn't bad, but there was nothing really great or original about it, and certainly nothing in it that warrants a record breaking opening...

[–] Steve@communick.news 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (3 children)

So many here were shitting on this and its PG-13 rating.
Anyone willing to raise their hand and say they were wrong?

I'm actually about to see it in an hour.

[–] rozodru@pie.andmc.ca 3 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

me!

I was skeptical about it but I saw it anyways. I was wrong, It was really good, I enjoyed it.

I've always been a fan of the Alien vs Predator Darkhorse Comics and videogames from the 90s. I loved the world building, how it all took place in the Alien future timeline, the lore was great. The human interactions with the Predators was awesome. Badlands reminded me of that and god damn do they kinda set it up for another swing at Alien vs Predator that would be set in a similar timeline to the old comics and games.

That's what this movie, for me at least, was. It felt like a love letter to the very small fanbase of Predator fans from the 90s. The Badlands story has been told before on the pages of Darkhorse comics so for me it made complete sense. And it utilized a very important aspect from the Alien franchise without incorporating Xenomorphs. But man does it set up the potential for another AvP that DOESN'T have to take place on Earth and DOESN'T have to involve humans which I really hope they do.

[–] Steve@communick.news 2 points 12 hours ago

Good on you! Thank you. You may have liked it more than me.
I wasn't a fan of how much they humanized the predator. He has a human family structure, and a human pronounceable language. But that's minor stuff. It's absolutely fun and engaging. Totally recommend.

[–] tacosanonymous@mander.xyz 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

Never heard of this movie until this moment.

I don’t like to yuck others' yums but I’ll be your huckleberry.

Fuck this movie. It looks like the kind of trash that Marvel fans would gobble up.

[–] Steve@communick.news 3 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

So you haven't actually seen it?
How is anyone supposed to take your opinion seriously?

[–] RickyRigatoni@retrolemmy.com 2 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

This man does not understand the grind of a hater. Point at him and cast magic missile.

[–] Steve@communick.news 1 points 11 hours ago

I use my reaction to cast Shield

[–] RaivoKulli@sopuli.xyz 1 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

You hadn't seen the movie either before going after people saying it's shit lol

[–] Steve@communick.news 2 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

Fair point.
Doesn't make me wrong in this though.
Hating on haters who've not seen the movie, doesn't logically mean I have an opinion on the movie.

[–] RickyRigatoni@retrolemmy.com 3 points 23 hours ago

Doing the lord's work.

[–] outerspace@lemmy.zip 1 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

I don't know how exactly pg-13 works but i can say there were no humans harmed during this movie at all, and a lot of carnage otherwise.

[–] Steve@communick.news 2 points 12 hours ago

Yah, that's how they were allowed to include so much explicit violence. The blood was all green and white.
