lore accurate UNSC, master chief was made to slaughter revolutionaries, only thing that stopped them was the covenant beating them to the punch

that plus Halo 2 was just straight up a cartoony 9/11 revenge fanfic in space, the covenant use a ~~plane~~ spaceship to destroy the ~~twin towers~~ space elevator in new ~~york~~ mombasa, the arbiter was originally named the dervish, the villain is pretty much named after muhammad (the prophet of truth), and their villain plot is to suicide bomb the galaxy

cringe

It's still the best Halo campaign narrative. I always loved how they went full space opera with the Arbiter's side of the story and how much effort they put into expanding the universe and storytelling after what was seen in Halo 1. Halo 3's campaign was just an extended version of what was supposed to be 2's original climax and Reach was a snorefest trying to ape Call of Duty

ODST was good though

[–] Esoteir@hexbear.net 7 points 1 day ago

for sure, the xenofiction enemies-to-lovers plot instantly puts it head and shoulders over every other campaign

I was positively surprised to find a thread about this on the Halo subreddit with people dunking on Marty and calling him a piece of shit with this pinned comment from a mod:

Please continue reporting any fascist comments you see y'all. So many permanent bans being handed out today!

So many other gamer subs would've removed this on grounds of being "political" or "off-topic" jagoff

for anyone who knows how to use/search twitter, the user halo2mappack had a bunch of posts about marty's past at bungie and some from his discord.

his discord had nazis in it and some weird post by marty listing a bunch of things that gave him headaches. he also used some really bad ai images in his campaign

[–] drunkenmonkie2@lemmygrad.ml 32 points 1 day ago

Marty O’Donnell is the Richard Wagner of our era, really good composer that had his legacy tarnished by his own bigotry.

[–] pongo1231@hexbear.net 29 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Ughhh this one requires some very heavy seperation of art and artist for some of the best game OSTs

[–] Esoteir@hexbear.net 27 points 1 day ago (5 children)

if it makes you feel any better, michael salvatori is heavily underrated and also a huge part of the halo soundtracks, for instance he personally composed the menu theme to halo 2/3 which o'donnell originally turned down and said it had no place on the soundtrack

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUu0Uf8z8Rw

and while salvatori hasn't been like publicly cool or an ally or anything, he did work with ella feingold for almost all of the destiny game soundtracks, and for all of bungie and destiny's problems it's probably one of the most LGBTQ+ positive FPS game franchises of all times, like legit by the end of the last release a third of the main cast were all some form of gay/trans, and it had an onscreen gay bald guy -> android husband kiss

[–] Kefla@hexbear.net 8 points 1 day ago

Destiny has bald guy representation?! nl-brainiac

[–] doublepepperoni@hexbear.net 21 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Here's what someone posted on the Halo subreddit regarding Salvatori:

spoilerAs someone who personally has a relationship with both of them, Mike Salvatori is actually very different from Marty. Mike likes the quiet and is happy as long as his family has what they need, and he's always just been happy that Bungie gave him cool stuff to make music for. When he was at Bungie, he always described himself as a "believer" in the Bungie team and in Destiny as a universe. Mike actively hates social media.

Fwiw, Marty tweeted that Mike was a republican "just like him" and that's not true, or at least not anymore. Marty and Mike don't talk anymore and have a pretty bad relationship these days, so I imagine whenever they would've last talked about politics, Mike may have identified that way, but Mike and I don't talk about politics pretty much ever so I don't know what his views were several years ago. I will say that one of the main people Mike works with for Destiny music is a super cool trans woman named Ella who loves working with him. It's kind of sad I feel a need to specify this, but yeah; Mike's not some old boomer guy yelling at kids and is a super empathetic person.

Mike is an incredibly nice guy and everyone at Bungie absolutely loved/loves him. Mike has helped me through some tough stuff before and has been extremely encouraging to me as a younger composer. I really can't say enough nice stuff about him.

If anyone is curious, Mike wrote some of the all-timers such as The Lost Song, Walk in the Woods, The Gun Pointed at the Head of the Universe, Unforgotten, Broken Gates, In Amber Clad, Destroyer's Invocation (that's Mike's voice that he reversed and made super demonic, and he wrote the backwards message. It doesn't mean anything at all, has no connection to Halo lore, and was just supposed to be fun), and a ton more. Mike even did The Siege of Madrigal. I think Mike did Perchance to Dream, but he personally doesn't remember. He also did the drum and bass tracks from Oni, "The Hunt," and "Searching."

it's nice to hear Michael Salvatori seems to be chill and holy shit those are some 🔥songs, it's a shame I usually only see o'donnell brought up when people talk about the Halo soundtracks.

This bot consistently showing up in any thread regarding Halo is a tribute to how banger the names of the ships were. Critical support to whoever came up with those names.

[–] Frivolous_Beatnik@hexbear.net 14 points 1 day ago (3 children)

They're so good though. In Amber. Clad, Forward Unto Dawn, Long Night of Solace, Shadow of Intent. It's like the thematic opposite of the Culture naming scheme

[–] GrouchyGrouse@hexbear.net 9 points 1 day ago

They’re a ton of fun. I seem to remember one of the alien ships called Truth and Reconciliation or something like that. Great ominous names, so much better than “USS Dead White Guy Name”

[–] ItsPequod@hexbear.net 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I love that some writer snuck in UNSC Two For Flinching. Ships should be named more like this.

I believe Salvatori also did one of my absolute favorite songs in Halo 2, "Heavy Price Paid", which was another one of the songs that played on the menu. It's a shame it's all mostly accredited to O'Donnell; game music enthusiasts with their heads on straight knew he was a POS back in the mid-00s, too. As far as I can remember he's never been shy about it.

[–] Outdoor_Catgirl@hexbear.net 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah Destiny has a significantly diverse cast. Is there even any straight white guys in the main cast?

[–] Esoteir@hexbear.net 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

i don't think so, unless you count ex-cast member android nathan fillion lmao

actually wait nvm i think they added some white CIA guy time traveled into the future from the 60s in the new expansion nobody played lenin-pensive

I found a YouTube link in your comment. Here are links to the same video on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:

Hatsune Miku and Michael Salvatori did great work with the Halo soundtracks

Solidarity from a RuneScape fan.

Even my goat Nathan Johnson is a capital L LIB, and there is not a single piece of Dragon Ball music I do not like.

How do you even "destroy" a flood? A flood isn't organized in a way that it can be broken apart; it's the embodiment of destruction already.

"Destroy the destruction"

The chuds aren't AI'ing their best

[–] egg1918@hexbear.net 35 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The 'flood' in halo is a hivemind alien lifeform that infects people/aliens and turns them into zombies.

The white house and Marty here are saying that immigrants are an alien hive mind hellbent on mindless destruction of America and must be exterminated.

[–] trabpukcip@hexbear.net 15 points 1 day ago (2 children)

We'll that's bad. My consoleless childhood is showing

[–] corvidenjoyer@hexbear.net 11 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

You comment is still techincally correct though. The flood basically can't be destroyed permanantly.

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

halo 1 had a pc port, but pc had better shooters at the time anyway

[–] buckykat@hexbear.net 16 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Halo 1 for PC had a free demo that was basically just blood gulch, and when I was in school somebody put it on one of the gym teacher's unused shared drives so everybody could do LAN deathmatches any time we were sitting at computers and not directly observed by a teacher.

[–] Esoteir@hexbear.net 14 points 1 day ago

based lmao, i brought pirated copies of Halo CE and UT2004 to the school library, used to play that shit with a bunch of other people for like 2-3 years before they finally locked that shit down senior year sadness

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 10 points 1 day ago

that sounds cool, all we had was setting up a proxy to get to the flash sites they blocked with the nanny shit

[–] Outdoor_Catgirl@hexbear.net 18 points 1 day ago

The Flood are an alien parasite hive mind in Halo. These people are saying that immigrants are like that. It's very racist.

Ahhhhh ahhhh ahhhh ahhhhhhh

Dooo Doo dooooooo, dooo doo doooooooooo!
