Shouldn't Easter be an egg holiday?

[–] LadyButterfly@reddthat.com 12 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Not everyone likes eggs. And it's not inclusive of vegan.

[–] Balaquina@lemmy.ca 25 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Not everyone likes chocolate, and for the 7 people worldwide who are both deeply Christian and vegan, you can celebrate the holiday by hatching an egg.

[–] LadyButterfly@reddthat.com 13 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I'm sorry it was funny the way I said it out loud. I hang my head in shame

[–] Balaquina@lemmy.ca 5 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I feel ya 🙂. Text just can't convey sarcasm reliably.

I want the hatching an egg tradition. Every year you get a new mystery chicken.

According to this guy, it's a chocolate holiday. Idk what the potato is for but I would just make it more about eggs and egg dishes.

[–] zarkanian@sh.itjust.works 9 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Idk what the potato is for

It's for boiling, and mashing, and sticking in a stew.

[–] Balaquina@lemmy.ca 1 points 5 months ago

You can also power a clock with it.

[–] Davel23@fedia.io 29 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Why can't we have three candy holidays, three cheese holidays, and three potato holidays?

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 8 points 5 months ago (1 children)

On the first day of cheesemas my true love gave to meeeee

[–] WR5@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago

A cartridge of a nice brie!

[–] Davel23@fedia.io 4 points 5 months ago

Even better!

Easter is the egg holiday. Deviled eggs, custard, cake, pie, egg salad, etc. Eggs represent fertility and renewal.

Eggs represent my delicious dinner

[–] Okokimup@lemmy.world 11 points 5 months ago (4 children)

I like it. I also propose that Halloween always fall on the last Saturday in October.

[–] LadyButterfly@reddthat.com 5 points 5 months ago

I second this motion

[–] Balaquina@lemmy.ca 2 points 5 months ago

I am so conflicted about this.

[–] Squirrelsdrivemenuts@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago (1 children)

In some countries the first (and second) of november are holidays for all saints and all soulsday. I prefer that over moving halloween.

[–] Okokimup@lemmy.world 1 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Porque no los dos? I think that religious/spiritual holidays like All Saints and Samhein should remain as they are, and Halloween as a secular holiday should be on a day more appropriate for partying. Fridays would also be acceptable.

[–] Squirrelsdrivemenuts@lemmy.world 1 points 5 months ago

Well.. if the first of november is always a holiday, halloween is always on a night suitable for partying, so you do get both.

Ah yes, nothing says romance like lactose flatulence.

[–] Icytrees@sh.itjust.works 4 points 5 months ago

Some people are into that.

[–] GreenShimada@lemmy.world 9 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I'm good with changing Valentine's Day to cheese-based holiday. It seems like the worst candy comes out for that one, like it's all intentionally low quality. Heart-shaped Baby Bell cheeses? Hell yeah. Makes it worth the results later.

But potatoes for Easter? We already have eggs, why are we doubling up on round things without making it "round things holiday"?

I'm split, but willing to negotiate.

[–] Icytrees@sh.itjust.works 3 points 5 months ago

It's a fertility festival so round things makes sense.

It should have more phallic and vaginallic foods though, like carrots, zucchini, butternut squash, oysters and tacos.

[–] edgemaster72@lemmy.world 6 points 5 months ago (2 children)

How about cheese and potatoes get their own damn holidays

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 3 points 5 months ago

Can they share the same day?

Cheesy potatoes 🤤

[–] Wizard_Pope@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

We kinda have that already with halloween here. Primary and secondary schools get a week of around 31st oct and 1st nov due to them being holidays (no halloween is not a holiday here it's a different reason) and we call them potaro holidays. I believe it's because people tend to harvest their potatoes around that time.

We call it Pancake Day where I'm from. Because we eat a lot of pancakes.

[–] hperrin@lemmy.ca 2 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Wonderful. But instead of potato, can we do another cheese holiday?

[–] LadyButterfly@reddthat.com 2 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Let's think outside the box... potato AND cheese

[–] hperrin@lemmy.ca 1 points 5 months ago

I love it. I’ll take your entire stock.

[–] RickyRigatoni@retrolemmy.com 2 points 5 months ago

I prefer Halloween but think Easter has better candy.

[–] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago

I would love to get piping hot crispy crowns while trick-or-treating on Halloween.

[–] nymnympseudonym@piefed.social 2 points 5 months ago

I like that the most religious holiday is the one with the most bland food

[–] callyral@pawb.social 1 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Easter is not a candy holiday, Easter is a chocolate specific holiday (in practice). I do approve of Valentine's being cheese-themed though.

[–] LemmyKnowsBest@lemmy.world 1 points 5 months ago

If you want a potato holiday it should be St Patrick's Day because ireland.

[–] evilcultist@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 months ago (2 children)

The egg is a fertility symbol. Not sure if a potato is.

[–] hperrin@lemmy.ca 5 points 5 months ago

Not with that attitude.

[–] zarkanian@sh.itjust.works 4 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Spoken like somebody who has never grown potatoes.

[–] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago

Or lost a potato behind a cabinet ten years ago.
