What is this place? A safe space for underrepresented peoples and peoples of color to talk, chill, and vibe.
What are the basic rules of the community?
Follow Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines. Non negotiable. This is the bedrock and mods will make decisions with this always in mind.
This community is for ethnic minorities and people of color. This is a safe space where such people can freely discuss their struggles, insight, and thoughts without fear. If you are not, we respectfully ask you do not post or comment here. A future community will be established to allow for racial discussions with a mixed userbase. However, remember, comments here must still respect Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines.
Irony Racism is still racism. Racism is bad m'kay? We will treat irony racism and bad faith racist satire as racism. Will wield the ban hammer accordingly.
No sectarianism: This is an identity channel not a channel for you all to complain about why XYZ isn't the "one true leftism". Take that to another place.

This place is for ethnic minorities and people of color. This includes those of mixed heritage and those who may be "white" but are of an ethnicity that is a minority in their area (i.e. Kurds, etc) If you've experienced oppression due to your identity that is not based on sexual / gender identification, you are welcome here.
Moreover, for our American audience, we have people from around the world who are "white" but are oppressed due to being a minority in their country. They are and should be welcomed here.

I know this one white person who gives off John Brown energy, and I'm baffled by how genuine he seems... no tryhard shit, no performativity, just genuinely educated and aware. Also willing to accept critiques if he says something that seems racially off.

Good to know. My uncle is in a very respectable, lucrative, and social position as far as his work goes, so him taking time means that he's likely approaching this with some much needed diligence. I suspect he'll have to know someone, but we'll see. In the meantime, still doing applications with this paradoxical feeling in the back of my head where they simultaneously feel pointless and mandatory.

This anti-mixed shit is so weird and new to me. It doesn't make sense and it makes me sad and a little mad. Doesn't it sound somewhat like a race-based conspiracy theory? Because whether we like it or not, the one-drop rule tells a revisioned story of black history. You can't define all of blackness without adding in mixed black people. Only validating the most "pure" insert race is not at all a 1-to-1 with white supremacy, but it is claiming only "purely" black people are supposedly supremely black enough to receive validation that they're black. It's "disowning the unpures" like white people have done, and I do not get why anyone believes this rule.
Am I understanding the one-drop rule correctly? Am I too far out on a limb here?

I can't help but feel incredibly baffled at how I did a full 180° on how I view my Blackness. I can't believe it took me so long to realize that oftentimes a white leftist's leftism and a POC leftist's leftism, even if they claim to adhere to the same ideology, are not the same. In fact, they seem categorically different, even, i.e., when I compare my worldview to white leftism, I see that the way I view the world and leftism isn't even adjacent or merely a different flavor under the same umbrella of beliefs—it's an entirely different belief system altogether.

The amount of people I can talk to about the daily police surveillance I'm under and people who I won't freak out about this is very low, made the mistake of telling my mom about it and now she's worried. Having to back peddle what I said and saying it's not so bad is difficult. I know the obvious answer is to keep moving around town until the library is open but I crave a routine and same spots so bad 
I honestly wish I could turn invisible. If the police where just harassing me it be easier to process but it's the uncertainty of when they just stare at you for so long that gets me.

A week or two ago a former NFL player, Doug Martin, died of "medical complications" while in police custody. Yesterday Marshawn Kneeland died of an "apparant selfinflicted gunshot wound" after getting in a car chase with cops. Its weird how there hasn't been much put into question, especially with Doug Martins death since it has been a couple weeks now, in so far as the narrative being offered up by the police.

I made the mistake of browsing r/mixedrace.
That subreddit has so many mixed Black people who really just do not like their Blackness and want to distance themselves from it.
It's one thing to identify yourself a certain way. It's another thing altogether to act like you have to shit all over Blackness as your reason for doing so.
And when people express discomfort with them doing this distancing, they accuse them of engaging in the "one-drop rule," but no the fuck it's not. One-drop rule has a genetic premise. People don't tend to push against this shit on a genetic basis.
I'm sure if someone were 25% African and 75% European but was white-passing, they would find it understandable for that person to not outwardly identify as Black so long as they don't trash Blackness , but that's the issue—these people do trash Blackness, and in the process, they act like, even if they are Black-passing, society will put them in some special "non-Black" category. That's not how this works!
