Hmmm. What can I post about to belittle younger people? Oh, I know! A fucking bread clip! Yeah, that’ll make me look cool, for sure!

The OOP is definitely just engagement bait

[–] Stupidmanager@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Yes, yes, it’s a bread clip. but do you know what day the bread was baked on? According to my useless knowledge, it was Thursday.

[–] AbeilleVegane@beehaw.org 22 points 1 month ago (3 children)

You beat me back from the rabbit hole, I ended up watching a video about them to figure out the color code day of the week baked system. Sadly it mentioned not every bakery uses it now.

[–] Deceptichum@quokk.au 3 points 1 month ago

I love the effort they've put into this.

[–] arrow74@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 month ago

One day an archaeologist will find this very helpful

[–] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.dbzer0.com 20 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (3 children)

Did they get rid of them somewhere? Those were on the hamburger buns I opened last. Maybe a state like California banned plastic ties holding together plastic bags?

Also apparently they got named by a parody site years ago and have a cool following of collectors. They call them Occlupanids. And apparently the colors are supposed to tell the day of the week the bread was baked on.. ended up in a rabbit hole

Still used in Australia too.

[–] fulcrummed@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

They’re paper/cardboard now though.

[–] Hope@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Can't say whether another state banned them, but they're still on almost all my bread products in northern California.

[–] stray@pawb.social 4 points 1 month ago

They might be making them out of a plant-based plastic these days, so that they seem like traditional plastic but are actually biodegradable.

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 6 points 1 month ago

Don't really see them in the UK any more. They tend to use a reusable sticker instead.

[–] davidagain@lemmy.world 12 points 1 month ago

Fun fact:

Within each brand, the different colours of tag or tape represent different sell by dates, so the staff can quickly remove all the bread that's going out of date without reading the labels.

This means that if you're looking to see if there's any fresher bread, you can check for different coloured tags.

I reckon about 80% of posts like this are actually someone trolling and someone else falling for it

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 month ago

It's really obvious rage bait.

[–] jjjalljs@ttrpg.network 11 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Honestly I wouldn't miss the little plastic garbage that ends up polluting the environment

[–] geelgroenebroccoli@feddit.nl 6 points 1 month ago

My local supermarket has been using cardboard ones for a few years now.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

There are a great many life hacks for reusing those! I save the twists as well.

[–] slackassassin@piefed.social 2 points 1 month ago

Guitar pick for sure.

[–] FunctionallyLiterate@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

"Bread" used to be a slang term (at least in the USA) for money, so yeah - most commonly "bread" IS digital now.

[–] captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's only "bread" if it's made on the bread region of france, elsewhere It's technically sparkling wheat brick.

[–] FunctionallyLiterate@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

bread has bubbles in it. unless you forget the yeast.

[–] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 6 points 1 month ago (3 children)

... I have no idea what it is. Is it just more popular in America or does no one use them anymore

[–] Best_Jeanist@discuss.online 4 points 1 month ago

It's what they use to seal plastic bags of bread

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 month ago (2 children)

how are bread bags sealed where you are? the thin plastic ones that are mass produced

around here, they still primarily use these clips, just often cardboard now. which is nice to see.

'real' bread that doesn't have enough preservatives to keep it for weeks and is made fresh is typically sold in a paper/plastic bag with a sticker closing it, or just an open end

[–] SpatchyIsOnline@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

UK here, our bread bags are sealed with a piece of tape. It can't be used to reseal the bag, but there's enough excess length on the bags that you can just tie them in a knot to reseal them

[–] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 5 points 1 month ago

Usually sliced bread is sealed with a bit of tape that has the best before date printed on it. Although it still only keeps for days rather than weeks, at a push you can probably get about a week before mould starts growing on it. Then real bread will probably start going stale by the next day.

[–] megopie@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It’s a bag tie/clip. Often used on bags of sandwich bread.

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 month ago

So, america?

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

I prefer these to the twisty ties. I always save them from bags that use them so I can put them on other bags that don't.

The only thing better are those clamp style paper clips.

[–] slackassassin@piefed.social 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I'm more of a spin it around and fold under guy, myself.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

That's the go-to when I lose the clips and ties because I forgot where I saved them. 😌

[–] axEl7fB5@lemmy.cafe 4 points 1 month ago

bait used to be believable. anyways who actually uses these things? i always throw them out because imo tying is better

Or is it Lenny from Happy Days

[–] chonglibloodsport@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

It’s David St. Hubbins from Spinal Tap!

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Nope! Chuck Testa!

[–] kamenlady@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Obligatory Fuck Chuck!

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

This is rate bait, grandpa...

[–] BoosBeau@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

It worked! I rate your grandpa a 7/10. Great in bed, but the oxygen mask kept getting in the way.

[–] nathanjent@programming.dev 3 points 1 month ago

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Now I wonder if I can save a nickel next time I go to the bakery by bringing a chip clip.
