"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

Causes Lasting Cognitive Damage

b--but it lacks cognition in the first place lol

[–] pruwybn@discuss.tchncs.de 24 points 5 months ago

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the word choice.

[–] pyre@lemmy.world 6 points 5 months ago

yeah at first i thought it meant in users, but no they're referring to the LLM which is fucking stupid

[–] HaraldvonBlauzahn@feddit.org 3 points 5 months ago

They must have meant cognitive damage in the researchers? Cases of psychosis in AI users are, I think, now documented well enough....

[–] Broadfern@lemmy.world 52 points 5 months ago

TL;DR: Treating your LLM like an iPad baby makes it unrecoverably stupid.

So basically AI is like the yeast of the internet. They gobble up all the sweet stuff, and excrete a substance that, in high enough concentrations, will kill them. And if you drink the substance, you might get addicted.

Maybe I should have gone with a bread metaphor, but I think we might be cooked either way.

So AI's like candida, got it.

Wouldn’t make any difference if you did.

[–] Aggravationstation@feddit.uk 3 points 5 months ago

I may not be a smart man, but I know what Spez is

AAVE is not brainrot are you fucking serious?

[–] Hansae@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Zoomer slang is 100% brainrot bussin on that Oxford dictionary

[–] carotte@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 5 months ago (1 children)
  1. most of it is not "zoomer slang", it’s misused AAVE
  2. it’s still not brainrot. slang words have meaning, you can’t just use them at random. come on
[–] Hansae@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 5 months ago

Cope seethe, mald even etc etc

[–] Aggravationstation@feddit.uk 0 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I have no idea what AAVE is, I've only ever come across those words being used as parodies of modern internet slang.

African American Vernacular English.

In the US, at least, slang tends to trickle upwards, from People of Color, and/or queer communities, to young people, to your white suburban dad's Facebook page where culture goes to die

It’s hilarious that Musk/Zuck think their platforms are data mines of any value. They’ve poisoned their trillion dollar wells.

Google’s in the process of this too, on a larger scale.

AFAIK most research is leaning into synthetic data generation + runtime RAG anyway. This has tons of problems too, especially when reaching out to the web (for reference) is so screwed up, but it’s a less bad approach.

This shit is actually hilarious to me, in a 'I've learned the horrific secrets of the universe from an eldritch being and have fully realized the fragility of my kind' kind of way.

So if anything gen z and gen alpha will kill AI
