Official Title of this Community: Ethnic Minorities and People of Color

Why is the title different?

We like to have fun here.

What is this place? A safe space for underrepresented peoples and peoples of color to talk, chill, and vibe.

What are the basic rules of the community?

  1. Follow Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines. Non negotiable. This is the bedrock and mods will make decisions with this always in mind.

  2. This community is for ethnic minorities and people of color. This is a safe space where such people can freely discuss their struggles, insight, and thoughts without fear. If you are not, we respectfully ask you do not post or comment here. A future community will be established to allow for racial discussions with a mixed userbase. However, remember, comments here must still respect Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines.

  3. Irony Racism is still racism. Racism is bad m'kay? We will treat irony racism and bad faith racist satire as racism. Will wield the ban hammer accordingly.

  4. No sectarianism: This is an identity channel not a channel for you all to complain about why XYZ isn't the "one true leftism". Take that to another place.

  5. Stupidpol is not allowed. Stupidpol is class reductionist. We are an identity community. Thinking like stupidpol ignores the struggles of the oppressed, their voices, and their need for unique support. Nothing says oppression more than someone saying that the identity you have is "not real" and that if you only thought like them you'd see what your "real" identity is. Mods reserve the right to ban users and content who promote stupidpol, stupidpol memes, and other class reductionist thinking.

FAQ

I don't look XYZ and/or sometimes I can pass as white so I don't know if I can post here. Can I?

What can I post?

I guess I shouldn't find it shocking that I've encountered multiple white leftists who view "Black nationalist and Marxist" as a contradiction because, in their undialectical minds, all forms of nationalism are akin to some Nazi-style shit.

Leftists who skip anti-colonial theory

In western politics, saying free Palestine means that you want to kill all the jews, but having a tattoo of a group that tried to kill all the jews is okay.

[–] vegeta1@hexbear.net 13 points 2 months ago

Or doing a nazi salute gets turned into a roman salute.

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 17 points 2 months ago (5 children)

Crakkkers get really upset when you analyze or critique their treats, even when they're "leftists."

[–] Frivolous_Beatnik@hexbear.net 14 points 2 months ago (5 children)

Idk why people got so mad about poc saying Frieren makes them uncomfortable.

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 15 points 2 months ago

IDK what their problem is either. I like Frieren. I've watched the whole thing twice and eagerly await season 2. Doesn't change the fact it has problematic elements because it was produced in a capitalist society. It's going to have brainworms the same way Marvel stories or Lord of the Rings or Full House or whatever piece of fiction is going to have capitalist ideology because these are capitalist products.

But no, we have to have a struggle session over cartoons because Whitey doesn't want to turn on their brain and think about the implications or effects their treats might have.

Seen it enough in LGBT spaces , I think they used to chuds angry at them so everyone angry at their special media is labeled as such. White minorites please try to care about more than just yourself.

[–] HexaSnoot@hexbear.net 13 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

What do you mean by "critique their treats?"

Lol That makes me picture Gordon Ramsey acting disgusted on that one British baking competition show.

[–] Lemmygradwontallowme@hexbear.net 10 points 2 months ago (1 children)

"critique their treats?"

their pleasures, guilty pleasures or not. Such as, IDK, dubai chocolate or labubu shit

Sometimes it's media with problematic premises...

dubai chocolate or labubu shit Sometimes it's media with problematic premises...

I feel those with enough money to buy these things just want to enjoy their privilege without thinking about any negatives about it. I rarely have money for things like these, but when rich people share something of those sorts with me I also try not to think about the negatives of those luxuries. It's all about taking a bath in temporary comfort.

But these comforts are running out quick for the majority of people who are on the edge of not affording these things, and we certainly need to study why not all the masses, internationally, can afford them. I can feel the stress of having slipped into that level of money stress.

I usually willingly avoid being confronted by exploitive manufacturing processes because, to me, it's as hard to see as homeless people passed out on bare sidewalk with no blankets. I feel helpless looking at them, and i think, "What's the point of examining this further if I can't help? Just look away."

I'm also disabled and often don't have the spoons to do something even when I feel passionately about a situation. I have to sit on my ass and do nothing just to survive most of the time. Yet I still would like to hear my take on treats critiqued. I'm poor, so leftist critique about treats, even if they're mine, feels like someone cares about me.

[–] vegeta1@hexbear.net 12 points 2 months ago

Way shit is going many won't even be able to afford the treats they escape into and a lot of times form their personality around

[–] thelastaxolotl@hexbear.net 10 points 2 months ago

Stalin used to critique his treats (cowboy movies), crackers think that you personally attacked them if you say anything bad about about their favorite slop

[–] Wmill@hexbear.net 16 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Send us your brightest, your smartest, your most intelligent, Yearning to breathe free and submit to our authority, Watch us trick them into wiping rich people's asses, While we convince them it's a land of opportunity.

Honestly GTA 4 still my favorite of the series, the hillary statue watching everyone trapped in amerikkka with the grotesque heart chained inside is very Eldritch horror or capitalist horror. Playing as an immigrant from Yugoslavia gives it some extra touches now that I know what went on there.

Do mods on this site always go to bat for the wrong side of a struggle session? First was israhell, then Platner.

Can someone with more time here tell me if this is a common thing, please?

yeah liberals are usually wrong

[–] vegeta1@hexbear.net 12 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Wait for real? Over platner? thats-why-im-confused

[–] MizuTama@hexbear.net 12 points 2 months ago (1 children)

He's got a decent support base on this site: https://hexbear.net/comment/6610364

I unironically think we need to raise hell about new red lines at least on board. Whenever I get a moment I plan on drafting some type of post as this is becoming ridiculous.

[–] vegeta1@hexbear.net 10 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Agreed. Good lord trump really has people shook huh. Looks like trump has won more than folks on this site are willing to admit

[–] MizuTama@hexbear.net 12 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (2 children)

I don't even get the argument from a desperate, selfish, piece of shit viewpoint for most this site? This site has a notable BIPOC userbase and is gay asf. The next "purity" point is half of us!

Either they are not thinking of Non-Americans as human, thus thinking the rules will be different on that basis, are willing to sacrifice them anyway for a transient few moments of unjust peace, before the in-group for "power over purity" shrinks and no longer includes us.

It's not just unprincipled and immoral, it's out right suicidal.

Though I guess some hope to blend in enough they can survive.

I swear to God that so many Black people in the US have a colonized mentality when it comes to our hair.

a lot of people here have this too, I see the most beautiful looking human I have ever seen but people will say their hair is messy because it doesn't look straight.

[–] Ath3ro@hexbear.net 11 points 2 months ago

I’m reading this book called “Eating While Black: Food Shaming and Race” that touches on this but from the angle of food. White people sit up there and shame the food and other cultural aspects of someone’s life and unfortunately that trickles down into the minds of poc who want to now be seen as “healthy”, “clean”, and/or otherwise acceptable in the eyes of white people.

[–] Wmill@hexbear.net 10 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I feel this, I grew my hair out and while I do struggle with how curly it is I never iron it. I know my sister would bleach her hair blondish it's definitely a thing with latinas of trying to appear white passing.

[–] Rojo27@hexbear.net 10 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Yeah. Depending on where you are people refer to natural hair as "pelo malo", which is bad hair. Which is ridiculous because natural hair is beautiful. I'm kind of jealous of my brother because he can grow out an afro if he really wanted too. I have much looser curls so it doesn't look quite right when I try itdoggirl-gloom

Third world person having to steal money online from people to afford rent and food: irredemable scum of the earth. Doxx them and make content of them and be racist to them.

NATO soldier using an old man's prosthetic leg as a beer cup: just youth making mistakes while trying to pay for their college degree. elect them as president please.

there's no arguments or hypocrisy with crakkkers, just racism.

JFC it's like some kind of Christmas from hell where I go to sleep and wake up to hexbear doing some weird ass "so ironic it ironically became anti-ironic, ironically" pile of shit under the tree. And what's with the vague posting? I thought we weren't supposed to do that?

Mods: ban users for being "wreckers."

Also mods: posts bait to the front page, antagonizing users.

[–] homhom9000@hexbear.net 12 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I'm fighting the urge to respond. Why does it keep happening and why is the topic only on antisemitism? Jewish people aren't being genocided, I'm bored of the topic already.

Therapist asked me how I organize my life and it's really messing me up how almost every major personal tragedy of my life is rooted in how evil, racist, classist, sexist, and fascist AmeriKKKa is, and the one exception I can think of is still heavily tied to it. I feel almost insane typing that out (and I mean that in a literal sense, not an ableist sense). I second-guess myself -- how can that be true? Isn't that too reductive? Doesn't that eschew personal responsibility? Isn't that an exaggeration? It's not like my family got bombed by America. I can already imagine white friends — well, former friends — downplaying it if I said this. I've said things like this before and it seemed they didn't understand, but to make it make sense I'd have to outline a ton of horrible things that happened. I've even tried to explain this to my parents, citing things they told me in childhood, and they quibble too.

But I see it. There is a chain of events which follow one from the other and lead to disaster after disaster. It makes me feel like there's no point trying to rebuild my life again, because there is no escaping fascism. I've already rebuilt twice and both times, everything fell apart because I built a life with someone else who was also broken from fascism. What's the point of trying again? I'm drowning in grief.

None of this should have happened. People's lives shouldn't have to be this way. We live lives of misery and pain due to problems that should be avoidable if we weren't subject to fascism. At this point I'm just waiting for something to put me out of my misery.

I asked the one family member whom I keep in contact with, an uncle, if he has any recommendations for jobs or uf he knows someone who might be able to recommend something to me. He said he will check! We talked a little more in detail about what I'm specifically looking for (though I'm pretty wide-open. Just have preferences, of course.)

[–] Wmill@hexbear.net 13 points 2 months ago (3 children)

Told my mom I often get shocked expressions because I'm queer looking from older Latine people and she hit me with the weirdest reading, "people who are gay or homo you get these people who think they can be sugar babies to them and get all their money same can happen with lesbians" I love my mom for being so accepting but it's still an interesting take when it's just me being transgressive

I see why some don't leave this comm's threads, I feel like every I leave the news mega (and sometimes in it), I'm willfully coating myself in sewage to see if I can withstand the stench.

If it wasn't for irl experience I'd have ended up Sakai's strongest soldier at this rate.

[–] HexaSnoot@hexbear.net 13 points 2 months ago (1 children)

How do you deal with people of your own race calling you a "fake *insert your race?" I got called it and it was very hurtful and alienating. I wanted to know more about holidays I already celebrated, and about other holidays I might not already know of and wanted to start celebrating. It made me feel shame even though having been taught a shallower version of cultural heritage is not a thing to be ashamed about.

Once someone corrected a person calling me a fake *insert my race, and said "No, not fake. American-born *insert my race."

[–] Angel@hexbear.net 14 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I don't necessarily get this kind of shit on the basis of being born in the US, but I've gotten people telling me that I'm not "really Black" for these two reasons:

  1. I'm a Dougla
  2. I'm not "stereotypically Black."

When it comes to the "mixed people can't be Black" kind of take, I push back really hard.

My first ever girlfriend, mixed between Black and white, always received that anti-mixed rhetoric more than I did (because I am far more unambiguously Black than her), and as someone who's extremely proud to be Black, seeing how distressed it made her always gave me even more drive to push against anti-mixed rhetoric among Black people.

As Audre Lorde put it, you cannot dismantle the master's house with the master's tools. The moment these Black people start to invert the one-drop rule as a way to exclude our mixed siblings, they are using the white man's logic. The white man is the one who falsely affirms that race is a genetic reality that places you in a firm, essentialized category. Someone who actually has a proper, material understanding of how race functions in society knows that it is, first and foremost, socially constructed.

These anti-mixed Black people think they are revolutionaries, but they are the opposite. They are reactionaries who will hold back Black liberation, and for them to reject mixed people means they are quite literally putting the reification of an arbitrary white-invented system of categorization over the safety and inclusion of Black people. That is undeniably anti-Black.

When it comes to the thing about being "stereotypically Black," I have to remind people that this is a form of respectability politics. The moment you start denying the diversity of Black people and acting like we can only be valid as Black people if we conform to stereotypes is, once again, cracker logic. White people and closed-minded Black people are both the ones who tell me things like, "No way you're Black and you listen to metal!" and "No way you're Black and you're vegan!"

I feel like people are so caught up in their closed-minded ways of thinking that they forget how lived experience usually plays out. A majority of these biracial people that they shame for "not really being Black" will have the lived experience of a Black person, and denying that is utterly harmful.

Unfortunately, didn't get that job... but honestly, not shocked. It seems like a very demanding place to work anyway. They required me to have 98% accuracy on that assessment, but they use really shitty audio and require strict verbatim. I'm not the only who has noted this problem. I'm thuggin' still, though.

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 15 points 2 months ago (2 children)

What the fuck? They had you go through all those assessments and then at the last minute decided not to hire you? That almost sounds like the "assessments" were actual work they needed done but they did the ol' "get free labor by making it part of job interviews" scam.

[–] la_tasalana_intissari_mata@hexbear.net 11 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I one time translated a whole book and got no updates for the job

I think in English I talk it mostly but the second I get inconvenienced/angry/scared the spanish comes spilling out hard and fast. It's automatic and I can't help it idk I guess there's layers to my speech that I'm not always aware of

I've seen racist AI shit on Youtube of some crying white woman in a hospital with two babies that don't even look human while a Black man is beside her smiling at the monster babies (the monster babies are supposed to be Black).

[–] la_tasalana_intissari_mata@hexbear.net 10 points 2 months ago (3 children)

sensetive subjectSometimes I feel like white people treat POC historical struggles and crimes committed against them with such dark heartedness and inhumanity, like one time I told a westerner that the Germans gassed my great grandfather, and he fucking started talking about how I shouldn't blame the past on the failures of my African state???? I didn't even bring up anything besides that he got gassed for fuck's sake

[–] Angel@hexbear.net 10 points 2 months ago (1 children)

spoilerIt really seems like they view any non-white victims as being just statistics, numbers, and data.

Islamophobia/Anti-Arab SentimentY'know how you see new atheists hide behind an alleged hatred of religion in general to obscure the terribly insidious truth that they just hate brown people?

Well, what's fascinating is that the phrase "All Religions Are Bad," as an acronym, is ARAB. I really find that to be some interesting unintentional imagery to highlight the tendency for new atheists to deceptively act like they are not racist.

I know this is a little silly of me to note, but... was a thought last night.
