Official Title of this Community: Ethnic Minorities and People of Color

Why is the title different?

We like to have fun here.

What is this place? A safe space for underrepresented peoples and peoples of color to talk, chill, and vibe.

What are the basic rules of the community?

  1. Follow Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines. Non negotiable. This is the bedrock and mods will make decisions with this always in mind.

  2. This community is for ethnic minorities and people of color. This is a safe space where such people can freely discuss their struggles, insight, and thoughts without fear. If you are not, we respectfully ask you do not post or comment here. A future community will be established to allow for racial discussions with a mixed userbase. However, remember, comments here must still respect Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines.

  3. Irony Racism is still racism. Racism is bad m'kay? We will treat irony racism and bad faith racist satire as racism. Will wield the ban hammer accordingly.

  4. No sectarianism: This is an identity channel not a channel for you all to complain about why XYZ isn't the "one true leftism". Take that to another place.

  5. Stupidpol is not allowed. Stupidpol is class reductionist. We are an identity community. Thinking like stupidpol ignores the struggles of the oppressed, their voices, and their need for unique support. Nothing says oppression more than someone saying that the identity you have is "not real" and that if you only thought like them you'd see what your "real" identity is. Mods reserve the right to ban users and content who promote stupidpol, stupidpol memes, and other class reductionist thinking.

FAQ

I don't look XYZ and/or sometimes I can pass as white so I don't know if I can post here. Can I?

Idk why people got so mad about poc saying Frieren makes them uncomfortable.

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 15 points 2 months ago

IDK what their problem is either. I like Frieren. I've watched the whole thing twice and eagerly await season 2. Doesn't change the fact it has problematic elements because it was produced in a capitalist society. It's going to have brainworms the same way Marvel stories or Lord of the Rings or Full House or whatever piece of fiction is going to have capitalist ideology because these are capitalist products.

But no, we have to have a struggle session over cartoons because Whitey doesn't want to turn on their brain and think about the implications or effects their treats might have.

I wouldn't say people got mad, some of us other pocs just don't find it uncomfortable and think the critiques are frankly baseless

I personally like watching a bunch of dripped out, genocidal, German aristocrats getting their shit pushed in, it's fun, either way implying only white people like Frieren because of some secret embedded meta-narrative that justifies white supremacy is so far beyond proportion or sense, that yeah some people are gonna push back, not in anger, just in exasperation

I remember a fews weeks ago coming across a string of Frieren TikToks, massive views on each and the most common interpretation in the comments were labeling the Demons as stand-ins for "Americans, Israelis, European colonialists" etc....thousands of upvotes per comment, surprised the hell out of me, but at the same time I immediately clocked what they were seeing

This is why I think leftists tend to underestimate both the competence of certain media and the wider public's skills in correctly interpreting it, people (even normies, poc or white) tend to lock in when media is actually well written

I think you were being overly uncharitable in assuming most of the opinion was influenced by chud talking points. My opinion is one I have formed over reading many works of fiction - I cast no judgment on people who enjoy the work, and I don't even anticipate that the angle that I find uncomfortable was intended, I said as much many times.

I found it too reminiscent of nearly ubiquitous tropes that, whether or not you agree the author intended it, put me off the work. It literally cannot be argued, it's my reaction that is tainted by the prevailing currents of popular media

I'm glad you enjoy it! I actually find the demon elements of the show a much less compelling concept than other themes it runs with. I get the angle you're talking about, with demons (as with historical representations of vampires etc) representing the unfeeling, murderous and deceptive force that at its core has no care for life or humanity. I actually liked how the theme can be applied in other works, like Sinners, representing the faceless assimilation that will play whatever advantage it has to get its claws into the colonized people

The rhetoric around it in Frieren just hews a little too close to actual excuses for heinous acts that it feels gross to me.

I don't think it necessiated a 100+ comment deep-nesting yknow?

Also 100% some people got mad, I find it ridiculous how I and some other users were being painted with the brush of swallowing a chud narrative, being "tumblr" about it (sounding very much like a chud talking point), etc. It's a matter of personal taste and I don't think it's a baseless critique at all, as fuel for discussion not condemnation

People have definitely got angry over that, I saw pretty big outrage a couple years ago about it. I say this as a fan of the story. It was mostly chuds but they definitely had their little tantrum.

[–] CyborgMarx@hexbear.net 4 points 2 months ago

Chuds are about to throw even more tantrums if those Frieren TikToks keep getting more popular, I've already noticed their agreed upon cope line is "Solo Leveling was better"
