Back left is king for simmering a sauce

[–] halcyoncmdr@lemmy.world 17 points 1 week ago

On many modern ranges it is literally described as a simmer burner.

[–] Zoot@reddthat.com 1 points 1 week ago

What's crazy is this is exactly how I do it too... Front right for noods, back left for Sauce

[–] khannie@lemmy.world 19 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I use back left for basically everything. Keeps hot things away from curious kids. Back left gang!

[–] Dicska@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

It's even more natural to handle when you have arms long enough, plus the angle of the handle doesn't make it dangle.

[–] halvar@lemy.lol 16 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Please don't stone me, but I mean it's good when you just want to put something on boil for several hours.

[–] nanoswarm9k@lemmus.org 4 points 1 week ago

Np I think this thread is for the hotdogs+ramen crowd maybe?

[–] 404@lemmy.zip 15 points 1 week ago (2 children)

What? I always default to the back ones since the splatter won't reach my clothes as easily from there

[–] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 4 points 1 week ago

I also use the back ones since it is low likely that I'll hit a handle and have hot food flying about.

Do aprons just not exist any more?

[–] Wizard_Pope@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I don't know anyone that actually uses one to be honest

Making Aprons is easier than adding as many pockets to everything.

Might come back as we get out of gambler-designed slave-made garment supply chain.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

I use them when naked grilling because I don't want hot grease burning my nuts.

[–] Wizard_Pope@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Reasonable answer

[–] RaivoKulli@sopuli.xyz 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Why wear special clothing to avoid the splatter when you can just not get splatter on you

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I take the same approach to software development. Why waste time debugging when you can simply not write any bugs in the first place? Mystified how nobody else ever thought of this before.

[–] xor@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 week ago

I mean if you replace "not write bugs" with "write tests", this becomes a good metaphor

[–] RaivoKulli@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

My friend, you can just put the pan in the back burner lol

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)
[–] RaivoKulli@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I mean yeah it is an option but wearing special clothes for the splashes doesn't seem as necessary when you can just do a simple thing to avoid the splashes

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

An apron is a very simple item that simply goes over the clothes and secures with a single, simple tie

[–] RaivoKulli@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It's just unnecessary if you just use the further away burner lol

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

That's just unnecessary if you just use an apron

[–] RaivoKulli@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Well yeah those are the options. Use special clothiny for the splatters or just don't have the splatters. Second seems simpler imo

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Oh, you'll still have splatters.

[–] RaivoKulli@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 week ago

Can't say I've noticed any but could be

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I'm with the others here, back left is great for just getting some shit boiling out of the way, or simmering for a while. Back right is the tiny useless little fucker that gets no play until Thanksgiving.

[–] smiletolerantly@awful.systems 7 points 1 week ago

Yeah. Back left is the only burned in the right size for my pasta pot. Back right is a copy of front left and thus uniquely useless.

[–] Medic8teMe@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

Back right only gets used during canning season in our house.

[–] Creat@discuss.tchncs.de 8 points 1 week ago

Back left is the second most used one in our house, cause it's the 2nd largest. No idea how universal that is...

[–] galmuth@feddit.uk 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Is this an American thing? On my gas stove, the front left is rapid boil, front right is simmer, and the back two are normal.

[–] SomeAmateur@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

depends on the model of stove

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 2 points 1 week ago

I use that one specifically for sauces/gravy.

[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz 1 points 1 week ago

All my elements are broken except back left.

[–] JimVanDeventer@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

The size should be appropriate for the vessel. Things in the front require constant attention while the rear takes care of itself.
