Off the coast of Tokyo, along the Izu archipelago, lies a quaint island measuring ten kilometers across—Rokkenjima, private land, sole property of alcoholic curmudgeon Kinzo Ushiromiya.

Kinzo has four children, who each in turn have children of their own. Every year, the branch families reconnect on Rokkenjima for a family meeting. Despite the forecasted typhoon, for all intents and purposes, it's business as usual—save for a returning guest.

Kinzo has his foot in the grave. If he had a choice, he’d scatter his fortune to the winds. He doesn’t care to pen a will. There's just one person he has to see again while he still breathes—the one who haunts Rokkenjima, the Golden Witch, Beatrice.

Battler, eighteen, has been estranged from the Ushiromiyas for six years, due to the circumstances surrounding his father Rudolf's prompt remarriage after widowing. After the death of his maternal grandparents, Battler decides to bury the hatchet and attend the next family reunion. Unbeknownst to him, there may be unburied ones lying in wait.

Does Beatrice 'exist'? Did she grant Kinzo his fortune? What's with the morbid riddle under her portrait in the hall? Are there really ten tons of gold somewhere on Rokkenjima? Why do the servants keep calling themselves 'furniture'? Is Battler intelligent? Who needs the most therapy? Is there a correct way to read stories? Does true love only exist in the next world? Is magic real? ~~One could say… it's a mystery...~~

On October 4th, 1986, Rokkenjima had a population of eighteen. But when the seagulls cried…

Umineko no Naku Koro ni (lit. When the Seagulls Cry) is the second serialization under doujin circle 07th Expansion's When They Cry banner—serialized visual novels penned by Ryukishi07. Besides Umineko, he is also known for Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, the prior entrant in the series, as well as his most recent work, Silent Hill f.

Serialized after the conclusion of Higurashi, Umineko was written between and released in episodic chunks for each Comiket, from Comiket 72 (August 2007) to Comiket 79 (December 2010).

As with Higurashi, Umineko is organized into two blocks of four episodes, respectively localized as Questions and Answers arcs.

There are three generally agreed upon ways to best experience Umineko:

  • The official Steam port: Questions Arc, Answers Arc
    • Both entries are 40% off on steam until October 6th.
    • Comes with the Original and MangaGamer sprite sets.
    • With this version, it is recommended to also install 07th-Mod, which adds voice acting (Japanese), PS3 sprites/backgrounds as additional visual options, and general QoL.
  • The fan port of the PS3 release: Umineko Project
    • This has the PS3 sprites (only) and voice acting built in, as well as animations that are not present in 07th-Mod.
    • ~~the password is 035646750436634546568555050~~
  • The manga adaptation, which you can find online at various Sites[^1]
    • If you can stomach long VNs, I’d recommend the VN. If not, the manga is generally regarded to be the next best way to experience the story.

My personal recommendation is to use Umineko Project ~~(since you can get it for free with just some setup)~~—though, if you want to read with the Original/MangaGamer sprites, MangaGamer CGs, and/or Original backgrounds, use the Steam release.

You can also play it on a Switch emulator on your smartphone provided it's recent enough, such as Eden or Citron (it might be differently stable on different emulators on different devices). The game is findable on switch rom sites and then can be patched to English with umineko catbox on github. You will need the prod keys but all of that is explained on reddit threads if you google it.

Did the guest on the newest trueanon come across as anti-Semitic to anyone else?

[–] SteamedHamberder@hexbear.net 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Just reading your post I haven’t listened to the ep. But I looked at her substack, and using the term “Talmudic” as a negative descriptor, coming from a person with little to no knowledge of Talmud at the very least raises a yellow flag to me.

[–] solongbeengood@hexbear.net 9 points 1 month ago

Maybe I didn’t fully understand, or maybe she’s just read too many tweets about D&G, but the argument seemed to be that ChatGPT and other LLMs are based on Talmudic logic and Maimonides (as opposed to western? Christian?) (because they have Jewish founders?) and that that’s bad and can make people psychotic if they don’t understand it? And that Ezra Klein’s Abundance is also targeted towards Jewish people because it talks about deserts? And there was a line she said at the end about “population control” that felt very ZOG conspiracy theory. I didn’t like how Brace and Liz sort of just let her talk and didn’t question or push back or clarify or anything.

A gat is a traditional korean hat that designates rank within the Joseon social hierarchy, especially with regards to the confucian examination system.

A gat is also slang for a gun.

There is potential for a movie here, and it's not a good one.

"The government would advance 75% of the total sum to the ____________ and then the __________ would repay the government, plus interest, over forty-nine years"

A) College, Student
B) Landlord, Serf

Pick the correct answer.

spoilerB. Land reforms in Tsarist Russia. You can tell because the US government would advance 100% of the total sum.

AI rant? AI rant.

I fucking despise how chuds always see everything good as a “problem” they need to “solve”. AI is literally their equivalent of Apple, and even doubles as their version of funko pops. Look at art and just finding some information online. Completely painless, but nope, chuds are cheering on AI slop ruining both because “muh innovoooshunz!” If it ain’t fucking broke, don’t fix it.

ChatGPT is projected to use more electricity than NYC and San Diego combined and what do you see on Reddit. The soy right clapping like seals “worth it! I’m innovoooting!”

Like I think I understand degrowthers a lot better now: don’t fix what ain’t broke. We don’t need “innovation” when its not needed.

I got today and tomorrow to finish 4 chapters of dark money by jane mayer. If I do then I'll have finished one book in a week. I think 1 a week going forward is a bit ambitious but if I can keep the ferver up then I feel like it'll be a good goal since I tend to start my new years resolutions before new years so I keep the ball rollin gustavo-brick-rollin

I just did a quest line in WoW to unlock "Old Naxxramas" and this shit isn't even the old naxxramas, wtf. All it did was unlock an npc that gives you a quest to get some old gear and even then you have to do a shitload of farming just to do it. Can't believe I wasted that much time to unlock an "Old" version of a raid that isn't even the old version. Fuck this shit

Ex who I'm pals with was gonna babysit her bf who did some acid and then he somehow fell asleep somehow on 2 hits of acid. So she decided to take some. Now im being texted for entertainment links. Im glad we're still good enough pals that im the one she thought of there. Didn't know she was coming up while talking cause I guess she got into a fight with her BF's boss for being a boss and into how to go about that well. I said read theory and sent a bunch and also yellow parenti. Then she said she also took acid and bf is asleep and may as well.yeklow parenti. I didnt knownthese were the circumstances but tripping balls to thsr lecture seems fun.
