General community for news/discussion in the UK.

Less serious posts should go in !casualuk@feddit.uk or !andfinally@feddit.uk
More serious politics should go in !uk_politics@feddit.uk.

Try not to spam the same link to multiple feddit.uk communities.
Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.

Posts should be related to UK-centric news, and should be either a link to a reputable source, or a text post on this community.

Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.

If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread.

Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.

Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.

Behave like Tories and get treated like Tories.

[–] Karjalan@lemmy.world 3 points 6 hours ago

I haven't followed UK politics much lately, but sounds similar to Labour in NZ. Take over from conservatives trying to sell off the country and fuck over the poor, win a mandate super majority election, do nothing or worse, back track on your progressive campaign promises... Get railed in the next election.

And the government that took over is the worst we've had in decades.

16% so far. Tax the wealth. Stop funding the genocide. Stop throwing minorities under the bus. Stop sucking up to nonces. Improve people's lives: we can no longer afford circuses, we can barely afford bread.

we can no longer afford circuses, we can barely afford bread.

hear hear

[–] Valmond@lemmy.world 3 points 14 hours ago (3 children)

What does nonces mean here? Non native speaker here!

[–] waz@feddit.uk 5 points 13 hours ago (3 children)

It originated from prisoners who have done something despicable, so that they would be at risk from the rest of the prison population: Not On Normal Courtyard Exercise. NONCE.

[–] fakeman_pretendname@feddit.uk 3 points 7 hours ago

Almost none of these abbreviation based etymologies are true - they're made up years later, normally as a joke, and somehow you end up with people spreading them about as facts.

Thanks!

For me it was Number Used Once in cryptography 😁, or in french it's some sort of arch bishop or something IIRC.

Paedophiles.

[–] Fedegenerate@lemmynsfw.com 3 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Nonce: child rapist.

Refering to Trump mostly, but our Prince Andrew is also a child molestor. He's walking free and living a life of luxury few of us will achieve.

Seems to be an incomplete anwer, see the answer of @waz

[–] Valmond@lemmy.world 1 points 12 hours ago

Who would have thought being a Zionist, billionaire serving, authoritarian bitch would go down badly?

[–] 9point6@lemmy.world 31 points 16 hours ago

It's honestly baffling how tone deaf his government is

[–] yucandu@lemmy.world 10 points 14 hours ago

The polls suggest the people want leaders who are more of those things.

[–] PrettyFlyForAFatGuy@feddit.uk 5 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

i probs would have voted for them in the next election, but then they called me a Jimmy Saville supporter...

so fuck em...

[–] meejle@lemmy.world 1 points 12 hours ago

Probably projecting

The Express is an untrustworthy tabloid, but damn. Fascism incoming.

UK voting intentions, with Reform at 34%

[–] theo@lemmy.world 5 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Well at least the Greens are polling relatively high. Hope that trend grows now with new leader + possible collapse of Corbyn/Sultana.

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 10 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Those kinds of numbers unfortunately don't usually translate into seats under FPTP, especially with one party so far in the lead.

[–] waz@feddit.uk 3 points 13 hours ago

Also, people treat polls as a kick up the arse for the incumbent, then vote on their personal politics come election day. So it’s really unlikely even the lead in the polls will see that in reality.

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 17 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Fascinating from a US perspective. When Democrats perform badly we don't blame the Party, we just scream at the voters for not voting for the Democrats hard enough

[–] circuscritic@lemmy.ca 7 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

The Democrats never fail us, we just continually fail them.

Which is also a sentiment extremely popular on Lemmy.world, the biggest instance.

[–] obelix@lemmy.world 4 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

He's shit and everything, sure, but this is The Express. I wouldn't even use the paper to wipe my arse.

[–] G4Z@feddit.uk 3 points 9 hours ago

Shows his pandering has not worked, wouldn't you say?

[–] iAvicenna@lemmy.world 8 points 13 hours ago

I have been telling since the start, Keir Starmer is a seat warmer for Nigel Farage.

[–] SoyViking@hexbear.net 12 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Who could have thought that saying "fuck you and by the way my opponent is right" to voters would not be a winning electoral strategy

[–] huf@hexbear.net 3 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago)

yeah, why is he in crisis? this is what he worked for. tirelessly. he's a huge success.

[–] sgtlion@hexbear.net 14 points 16 hours ago

The only thing I'm pushing for from the government now is proportional voting before the next election. Otherwise we'll be in a fascist Reform hell.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 11 points 16 hours ago

I thought the Democrats' 27% was bad, but holy fuck.

[–] sleen@lemmy.zip 14 points 17 hours ago (2 children)

Not surprising. This country is basically a clown show, and he helped build it.

[–] urno@lemmy.world 26 points 17 hours ago

Seems a bit rough to overlook the previous Tory shitshows?

[–] NoPanko@feddit.uk 26 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Well helped perpetuate it anyway, it has been a clown show for a while now

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 13 points 15 hours ago

the amount of people who forget that we had over a decade of Tory rule astounds me sometimes

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 5 points 14 hours ago

So how did sucking at the orange teat go for ya laddie?

[–] ChairmanMeow@programming.dev 1 points 15 hours ago

I wonder how many Labour PMs we'll see before the next GE.
