What, seriously? Must be a weird US thing. It's funny because text messages are just a bit of data that's already sent within the mobile phone signal, which is why they originally had the 160 character limit. The idea that you had to pay for them at all was just greed surprised-pika

Actually, I may have mixed up with how teletext is just a bit of data within a TV broadcast signal, but the point remains that text messages cost operators almost nothing.

Yeah nobody used to text in the states because of mobile carriers charging tooth and nail for bullshit. iirc texting, sms, was really popular in the global south though.
