What is a Tankie?

Alternatively, a detailed blog post about Tankies.

(caution of biased source)

Basic Rules:

Sh.itjust.works Instance rules apply! If you are from other instances, please be mindful of the rules. — Basically, don't be a dick.

Hate-Speech — You should be familiar with this one already; practically all instances have the same rules on hate speech.

Apologia(Using the Modern terminology for Apologia) No Defending, Denying, Justifying, Bolstering, or Differentiating authoritarian acts or endeavours, whether be a Pro-CCP viewpoint, Stalinism, Islamic Terrorism or any variation of Tankie Ideology.

Revisionism — No downplaying or denying atrocities past and present. Calling Tankies shills, foreign/federal agents, or bots also falls under this rule. Extremists exist. They are real. Do not call them shills or fake users as it handwaves their extremism.

Tankies can explain their views but may be criticised or attacked for them. Any slight infraction on the rules above will immediately earn a warning and possibly a ban.

Off-topic Discussion — Do not discuss unrelated topics to the point of derailing the thread. Stay focused on the direct content of the post, rather than engaging in unrelated arguments.

Brigading — If you're here because this community was linked in another thread, please refrain from voting, commenting or manipulating the post in any way, this includes alt accounts. All votes are public, and if you are found to be brigading, you will be permanently banned.

You'll be warned if you're violating the instance and community rules. Continuing poor behaviour after being warned will result in a ban or removal of your comments. Bans typically only last 24 hours, but each subsequent infraction will double the amount. Depending on the content, the ban time may be increased. You may request an unban at any time.

"I bet you think Tiananmen Square massacre was real too."

It's this really where we're at? Pretending it didn't even happen? Accusing those who acknowledge the event of being brainwashed? Jesus Christ.

I like how they don't seem to realize how crazy they are

Tankies are basically just magats who swallowed eastern propaganda and somehow think it makes them morally superior to everyone else.

[–] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 9 points 2 months ago

They're literally conservatives. What defines that label is ingroup loyalty as a theory-of-everything. Us good, you bad, and then you make up clever-sounding reasons why. If they don't match yesterday's reasons, who cares?

They think that's all you're doing. They think that's all there is.

Ah yes, we’ll stop the government from repressing people by… checks notes

Having the government repress people. Makes perfect sense.

they tend to do that. but they won't ever invade spaces that are critical of them

God, speaking of that phenomenon, my 'favorite' example is of Soviet citizens ~~unrolling a banner in~~ supporting the Soviet right to assembly in 1977(?), and getting arrested for it.

How many months away are we from that here in the States, do you think? My bet is on ~12, but the timetable is already faster than I expected, so I might be a bit optimistic with that number.

[–] goat@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

got a link about that banner stuff? sounds like an interesting read

Zero. The particular specific circumstance in your example hasn't happened yet (as far as we know...), but protesters are already getting, arrested, charged for RICO and/or terrorism, deported, etc. for nothing but their peaceful political speech.

Arrests for a meta-protest could happen tomorrow; it's all down to the random chance of some jackbooted thug's mood.

[–] PugJesus@piefed.social 2 points 2 months ago

Yeah but I'm asking for the super-ironic version outlined in my example.

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 0 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Why do you want the US to be Authoritarian?

[–] PugJesus@piefed.social 1 points 2 months ago

Want? On the contrary, I'm terrified of the route we're going down.

When I say "12 months may be optimistic", the potential optimism in that statement is that the resistance of US society and institutions may be overestimated in that timetable.

I read this and didn't check in what community or context it was posted. After reading it there still was a 50% chance it could have been posted in any .ml community.
