I love rye whiskey and want to buy a really great bottle of it for special occasions. I've had Angel's Envy rye and loved it, but want to know of others that I haven't tried/maybe lesser known. Since it's for special occasions, $100-$200 price range is fine.

OMG I thought you meant bread flour.

I am usually a bourbon girl.

But Redwood Empire Emerald Giant is my favorite rye, so good for the price, gorgeous bottle label and not well known; and the cocktails community here at lemmy.world might also enjoy discussing this.

[–] calliope@retrolemmy.com 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I too thought it was bread. I was like “marbled!! Oh.”

[–] RBWells@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Sourdough Rye for me, hands down. With onions or olives or the caraway seeds or just the rye. I make it with about 35-40% whole rye flour and the rest bread flour and it's so good!

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

That would be excellent

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Even a step farther

  • Russian black rye
  • no wait, Founders red rye ipa
  • darn, whiskey?
[–] LORDSMEGMA@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago

[–] LORDSMEGMA@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago

Redwood Empire makes some good shit

Pumpernickel is great. Especially for grilled cheese.

[–] themadcodger@kbin.earth 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I love all the breads, and that sounds yummy right now, but light with caraway is my favorite—almost certainly because it was the first I was exposed to. It won't appeal to probably anyone, but as a kid my favorite sandwich was seeded rye, raspberry preserves, and chunky peanut butter.

[–] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

A little sweet and savory, nice.

Have you tried Bulleit Rye?

It’s cheap ($35) but quite good. I always bring a bottle to family gatherings because my SIL makes a mean Manhattan and that’s her preferred brand.

[–] Goodmorningsunshine@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

Yes, Bulleit is great! It's my go-to

[–] motherr@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I used to buy spirits for a handful of restaurants/bars and since no one has really answered your question yet I'll suggest a few.

-Whistle Pig is great and widely available. There's a handful of old world, single barrel, speciality bottlings that are quite nice. I didn't much care for the Madeira one personally but others seem to really like it -Jefferson's ocean aged -michters barrel strength -heaven hill grain to glass -very olde St Nick (I've only tried 8yr, summer, and harvest) -willet family 7yr

Above $100, in my opinion, you quickly hit diminishing returns. There's honestly little reason to think $180 bottle is better than $100. If you can find it, it's never a bad idea to try it first at a bar or liquor store that offers that.

[–] Goodmorningsunshine@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Thank you! These are great recommendations!

[–] sik0fewl@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Lot 40, because it's Canadian. It's also 100% rye, no corn.

[–] Goodmorningsunshine@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

This sounds awesome! I'm gonna give it a try

[–] sik0fewl@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 months ago

The regular Lot 40 is good, but I recently tried the Dark Oak for the first time and I really liked it. If you like bourbon, I'd definitely recommend giving it a try.

EH Taylor Straight Rye is an excellent rye for about $80

Otherwise Rittenhouse Rye Bottled-in-bond is a great $25 drinker

Whatever Boas drinks in the old mill would be my recommendation

My favorite rye is by Rocker. They are in Colorado, and do not distribute nationally, unfortunately. The distiller is going for a niche, local market, he tells me.

Anyhow, all other rye whiskeys taste ‘thin’ in comparison. Super rich and super sippable.

[–] Goodmorningsunshine@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I might just need a road trip! I'm in NM, so it's a pretty easy drive.

[–] porksnort@slrpnk.net 2 points 2 months ago

Yeah, their tasting room is a nice hangout in a nice area with other stuff in walking distance.

Weird hours, so be aure to check.

Go-tos when out and about are Michter's and Templeton. A bit harder to find is Alley 6 and Redwood Empire.

Slowly working through bottles picked up on trips. San Diego Distillery and Woodinville near Seattle. There are a lot of good, local ones.

At home, it's good old Bulleit.

My favorite rye is also the worst one.

Old Grandad.

[–] blackbrook@mander.xyz 1 points 2 months ago

High West Double Rye is really good for the price.

[–] HikingVet@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

100 to 200 dollars for rye gets you top shelf (if any of it can be considered that good) in Canada. Where are you?

[–] Goodmorningsunshine@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (23 children)

I'm in the US, and that's likely the same here

Rittenhouse and Elijah Craig. Somewhat accessible and are a good step up from your more accessible ryes.
