Lemmy is toxic as fuck. Decentralization is a good thing, but it doesn't magically fix social media.
Honestly if I remembered what I did to have something to poke at before Lemmy I'd probably just do that. It's a mostly unenjoyable compulsion at this point. The whole thing seems to be just childish bickering and depression bait.

The problem is that the fediverse has genuine usability problems. Even from the perspective of a technical person. I am a sysadmin, and i self host a hilarious amount of things for no reason. Yet even i find the verse frustrating. Discoverability is near non existent, searching is hard, many instances just have duplicate content for popular topics, people don't understand how federation works for the main feed so you get times where stuff like that instance that is only for women pops up on a bunch of different instances Main feed and you have to deal with all the "shutup man this isn't for you!" And then of course there's always the which one do I even make my account on and then even after you do select one there's no guarantee it won't shut down at some random point and you'll be forced to migrate etc.
I've been on lemmy for a while and i still struggle to find content i want sometimes, but things like bluesky? It's easy, i found what i wanted easily and the algorithm picked up on what i liked and what i didn't and brought me more of what i wanted.
And the big problem with open source Alternatives and the fediverse is that instead of acknowledging that these are issues that need addressing and usability could be improved. They will instead tell you that it's your fault and you should give up all of those nice interactions for the sake of being decentralized. It's up to you to put in the effort to search every instance ever and find the content you want and bring it all together, it's up to you to migrate as needed and deal with other things caused by the decentralization. I just want to find some nice art, talk about some interesting Tech stuff and avoid politics to relax. Bluesky and even to some degree reddit let's me do this easily, lemmy makes it difficult.
I'm a sysadmin as well and the number of technical glitches is frustrating as hell. This site doesn't even function well on a vanilla PC with Firefox.
I think it has something to do with a ban, but I can no longer save posts or edit my own posts or comments. Happened for a month, went away, came back. It's my account, tested with a fresh one.
Also, I go to post and it simply disappears or glitches. That's how I know I'm banned on that comm. Can I get a little red flag or something?
When I look at replies, I only get so many and it cuts off. Below the cutoff is replies from months and years ago. Those posts are just stuck there, can't remove them, can't scroll past them.
Lemmy.world is constantly glitching. I can hardly bitch about a free service, but unreliability drives people away.
Not a glitch, but I'd love a NSFW only switch. Seeing as they've coded a working NSFW blocker, it would be trivial to reverse it.

Other people have mentioned it, but I'll mention it too because it's such an awesome feature. Piefed idebtifies duplicate posts across the fediverse and presents a combined comment section for them. It's amazing at tackling the duplicate content and endless cross-posts issue.
And while that's nice, and i will try it. it just highlights another usability problem. Fragmentation, which client should I use? Will that continue to be maintained? Nope it died well time to switch to another one I guess. Lots of problems like that across all decentralized platforms not just lemmy

Yes but there was always an official one even though it was complete dog shit garbage that didn't matter to the average person that's what they are going to use. They don't care nor think about alternatives. It's easy to forget what the masses think about especially in places like this.
But that's not really the case with decentralized platforms there are a ton of different clients none of them are technically official and pretty much all of them is missing something it's just a matter of what's each one missing. And thats enough to kill usability for most average people

Honestly, PieFed solves so much of that - like combining all comments across all cross-posts, and Topic Feeds, which are user customizable and shareable, and showing the sidebar text with all the rules and such below each and every post in a community, not only on the community page itself, plus adding flairs (user and post), polling, a true blocking ability for all users from an instance, blah blah etc. but the chief thing is that it keeps growing so quickly. Python is just that much easier to code in than Rust, I suppose, or else the devs are just super good (or both?:-).
I lost hope for Lemmy long ago and almost decided to leave it, even if there was nowhere else to go. I am so glad to have found PieFed.
Even then if I want to learn about certain things that are barely talked about here, I have to go back to Reddit. I lurk now but that is where the people have decided to share their content, so if I need specifically it then that is where I need to go to read it.

I find the ability to filter for communities both on Lemmy and Piefed, as a new user, to be far better than Reddit. Community owners can change the name of a community for increase its visibility, you can organise by activity. Especially with Piefed 1.2.
Piefed has some great features for discoverability, like feeds, but afaik every fedi reddit clone still suffers from the problem that someone from your instance has to subscribe to a remote community before it shows up at all. So if everyone just picks an instance and sticks with it, the federation never happens. It also promotes a more centralized fediverse because more populated instances will both be more likely to have a local community for a topic and to have at least one user subscribe to any given remote community.
As an individual, it's difficult/impossible to keep up with everything or to discover new things because there is no true r/all equivalent. You'd need to browse multile instances or use external tools regularly to check on fediverse activity.
I couldn't get my brother over the new user hump, and he's way more technically inclined that I am in many ways. I build PCs (he doesn't), but he runs things like Tor and Linux, dual boots, etc. He's also more politically left than I am, at least through overall experience (he actively canvased for Bernie and such). He's the reason I even got into politics and learned that I'm a leftist. He hates the same things I do about reddit, so I thought for sure that he would click with Lemmy.
But it sounds like he inadvertently joined one of the bad instances and wound up being defederated pretty early on during the post-migration fiasco. I don't think he fully understood what was going on, and wound up leaving due to the negative experience and perceived censorship. Kind of a bummer. I tried to get him to join a new instance but he didn't want to go through the trouble of setting everything up, I guess.
He was very much in the wrong place at the wrong time.
I will play devil's advocate, it is not necessarily that people have bad excuses, most of the time it just hard to break from habits. It doesn't help either that in the case of digital privacy, most people don't give a fuck. Tech companies know that people prefer convenience.
The only way I see how people will migrate to more ethical services like Fediverse and Signal is if enough people are convinced to go, that it will start a FOMO sentiment on to each person. That is the real boulder we are rolling up the hill.

90%+ of content on the fediverse is just rehashed reddit/twitter content lol. The remainder is just fediverse specific content like op.

We need more active users who are artists and writers.
I agree 100% about the artists part, but we have 2 huge problems:
The storage is obvious, artists won't be allowed to upload their drawings in good quality (even worse those who make animations or movies).
I know other social networks also kill their creations by compression, but at least they are easier to find by normal people and reddit-style users dislike clicking anything that takes them out of the website/app (like linking to Newgrounds or something).
Now allowed content... Lemmy has this thing about hating gooner content or booba for some reason (and using the NSFW filter is a HUGE nono, they just HAVE to be able to see blood and violence at work and in the presence of kids), and artists not only draw apples or mountains and happy little trees, sometimes even their own avatar is drawn smoking hot (either porn or not), so they get brigaded... HARD.
Also the current instances exists on places where... well... it's basically a crime to host NSFW/sexy content, I think with how the Lemmy federation works they won't be able to federate with instances that host that content.
These problems will basically only allow people who draw cute/safe stuff, and those already have a place on the normal social networks.
Hell, I'm subbed to a couple of porn comms and they haven't shown up on my feed for a looooooong time (neither have the sexy anime-style comms).
So basically... we have nothing to offer the artistic community, and they are even more sensible to political problems (the fucking main Lemmy devs are a fucking problem... and why I ended up moving to piefed [for now]), so knowing the storage problem will be there, they will most likely be brigaded by those who dislike their content/ideologies (NSFW or not) and will get hardly any exposure... it just doesn't work for them.
Lemmy and Piefed instances do not have set limits for storage. Someone can upload their digital work in the webp image format to compress their image down to kbs. I don't think any admin is going to be upset towards og artists. Also there could be a cooperative where artists can donate a portion of their income from donations and commissions to help fund their preferred instance's storage costs. This concept already works with Cosocial. it might be necessary for Peertube, Loops and Pixelfed instances to function as cooperatives for creative folks to be viable. The fediverse instances do not have the advantage yet to bulk buy storage space like companies do. The devs are working on embedding third-party services more to work more seamlessly within the frontends and apps. Tesseract automatically compresses images to webp by default.
Videos can be posted from Peertube. The thumbnails can be used creatively there for the image in the lemmy/piefed feeds.
These spaces are not welcoming to discourse and different ideas. I don't agree with a lot of what I see here but idgaf about being downvoted or banned. Most of my family and the people I work with would be horrified by Lemmy. I still think we should be exposed to spaces we don't agree with, but don't be surprised when people don't want to be here.
Just send them cool content and funny memes as links to your instance. So if they want to comment/vote, they must sign up. Once they have, if there is a good app, recommend it.

There's no way I'd recommend friends and family to the Fediverse, well, at least not Lemmy (can't speak for the wider services).
Piefed onboarding process asks how much politics the new joiner wants to see : none, a bit, all of it.
That and keyword filters already help make the All feed more appealing
Where is this? I set up my piefed blahaj account and have spent like the past 3 hours blocking communities after setting up filters that should already be blocking those communities.
It is an absolute slog trying to get a feed that isn't all just depressing or toxic shit.

Finally got my friends on signal, we were originally on Whatsapp, and then one of the several Facebook monitoring scandals happened and they agreed to switch to telegram, we went to signal for a long time after the Russia monitoring thing, and then we tried out telegram again and everyone hated it and wanted to go back. I've never really got that story. I understand it as a metaphor, but to me it doesn't quite work because this problem can be solved rather easily by constructing something, anything, at the peak to hold the boulder from tumbling. If he places the rock in exactly the same way each time, no wonder it falls down. But he should at least try a different approach or any other trick that improves the chances of it working. There are plenty of options.
Granted, I never read the actual story, I've only pieced it together from the many pop culture references to it. So they may be other aspects of the story that I'm missing.
