Rules

1. Submissions have to be related to games

Video games, tabletop, or otherwise. Posts not related to games will be deleted.

This community is focused on games, of all kinds. Any news item or discussion should be related to gaming in some way.

2. No bigotry or harassment, be civil

No bigotry, hardline stance. Try not to get too heated when entering into a discussion or debate.

We are here to talk and discuss about one of our passions, not fight or be exposed to hate. Posts or responses that are hateful will be deleted to keep the atmosphere good. If repeatedly violated, not only will the comment be deleted but a ban will be handed out as well. We judge each case individually.

3. No excessive self-promotion

Try to keep it to 10% self-promotion / 90% other stuff in your post history.

This is to prevent people from posting for the sole purpose of promoting their own website or social media account.

4. Stay on-topic; no memes, funny videos, giveaways, reposts, or low-effort posts

This community is mostly for discussion and news. Remember to search for the thing you're submitting before posting to see if it's already been posted.

We want to keep the quality of posts high. Therefore, memes, funny videos, low-effort posts and reposts are not allowed. We prohibit giveaways because we cannot be sure that the person holding the giveaway will actually do what they promise.

5. Mark Spoilers and NSFW

Make sure to mark your stuff or it may be removed.

No one wants to be spoiled. Therefore, always mark spoilers. Similarly mark NSFW, in case anyone is browsing in a public space or at work.

6. No linking to piracy

Don't share it here, there are other places to find it. Discussion of piracy is fine.

We don't want us moderators or the admins of lemmy.world to get in trouble for linking to piracy. Therefore, any link to piracy will be removed. Discussion of it is of course allowed.

WASHINGTON—Today, House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) invited the Chief Executive Officers of Discord, Steam, Twitch, and Reddit to testify at a full committee hearing on October 8, 2025. The hearing will examine the radicalization of online forum users, including instances of open incitement to commit politically motivated acts.

“The politically motivated assassination of Charlie Kirk claimed the life of a husband, father, and American patriot. In the wake of this tragedy, and amid other acts of politically motivated violence, Congress has a duty to oversee the online platforms that radicals have used to advance political violence. To prevent future radicalization and violence, the CEOs of Discord, Steam, Twitch, and Reddit must appear before the Oversight Committee and explain what actions they will take to ensure their platforms are not exploited for nefarious purposes,” said Chairman Comer.

These are the thoughts of the man they are championing. He was not a good man. He was not even an average man. He was a wedge between you and your fellow Americans. We should all strive to live a life that actually brings us together as humans instead of ripping each other apart.

Who are the ones really celebrating his death? The ones that thought he was an asshole or the ones that are using his death in every way possible to push their own personal agendas? I betcha in private these people are laughing their asses off and being waaaay more disrespectful than any of us have been.

In other words, explain what you'll be doing to add censorship to your platforms.

They really could not have picked a worse demographic to try that on. Not only do online gamers despise censorship and policing, their vocal minority is known for being extremely toxic and unrelenting. The icing on the cake is that a good number of them are right-wing, too.

Have fun dealing with the shitstorm you're about to create!

We're about to see even more groypers assassinating political figures if they manage to put their greasy censorious thumbs on it.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 2 points 4 days ago

I'm really not sure why Reddit is on that list. They were already censoring everything anyway all for their IPO.

The only one of those I really expect to show censorship resistance is Steam. And of that, I'm very curious if they're going to see repercussions from it.

Yeah, this is not a normal thing to do and clearly another way to try and make anyone who isn't MAGA, look like a criminal.

I'm sure they will find the majority of the hate speech is from right wing extremists, but then they will not post the research, or they will do their best to hide it from public view.

The administration has zero intention of being honest and helping society, so i really hope none of these CEO's do anything to coddle the crybabies in office. Let them cry themselves to sleep.

It’s too late. They will all capitulate out of fear. Democracy is dead.

Somehow I view this as just leading to GabeN never setting foot on US Soil again and living out his days between New Zealand and his yachts.

Like, I like Valve and Steam a lot. GabeN is libertarian as fuck (which is a lot of the problems that make Steam moderation non-existent) and has more money than many small nations. This IS asking Ron Swanston to deal with bureaucrats and idiots.

[–] Menschlicher_Fehler@feddit.org 14 points 6 days ago

I really hope he just moves Valve to NZ. That way I could spend money on Steam again without feeling dirty.

Good job steam isn’t a company.

I really hope these people stand up with moral integrity and actually mention far right radicalisation.

[–] SalamenceFury@lemmy.world 18 points 6 days ago

Ah, yes, go pick a fight with groups of people who literally would burn down entire platforms before getting censored. Good luck.

[–] kautau@lemmy.world 14 points 5 days ago

But of course not Twitter or Facebook, where Russia pays money to radicalize people

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 12 points 5 days ago

That screenshots NEEDS more not random CAPITALIZED WORDS to make SURE that you know what THIS IS ABOUT

Don't you just love to read TRUMP STYLE messages?

[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz 12 points 5 days ago

Steam will be shocked to find out that they have fourms but unsurprised to learn their fourms are a fucking cesspit.

[–] shiroininja@lemmy.world 11 points 6 days ago

The only one I care about is steam. And the others I know will bend the knee because their policies have already been heading that way, thats why I’m not on them anymore

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 7 points 5 days ago

“The politically right wing motivated assassination of Charlie Kirk claimed the life of a husband, father, and American Nazi

I couldn't agree more.

Right answer: LOL get fucked Predicted answer: We will do all the censoring you ask for and turn over all the records for users without even being asked, ensuring maximum impact to users who have nothing to do with this while gun-toting assholes continue to shoot up schools unabated because this is America.

[–] XeroxCool@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago

For decades, we've had a question live as a meme of misunderstanding and yet, it's exactly the question this committee should be asking now instead: "who is 4chan?"

[–] Cricket@lemmy.zip 2 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Who knew that the Twitch CEO was actually the blonde bearded guy from the memes? TIL
